Hello,
when I am playing Hearts of Iron, the game goes perfect and ok untill at a given moment with no special action the game goes awfully slow, the muse starts ´´jumping´´ from one place to the other of the screen, and I need to reset in order to do something,
it gets impossible even to Ctrl+Alt+Del or to Alt+tab, or to save the game and such. I am using win Xp, Nvidia´s GeForce Mx100/200 updated, and some good amount of MB on the graph board, don´t remember the exact amount but far more than what the game asks for. My Pc is a pentium 4 1.7 ghz.

Please help me,
Nuclear Winter

What is the driver version of your Video card?

It is version 41.09 from the nVIDIA wesite.
Ah, by the way, there is a something I don´t quite remember very well that is a Asus V7100.
I am sorry but I am very ignorant at computers.(Shame on me for making your task harded).
Hope this helps,
Nuclear Winter

Okay the first thing we will try is to Disbale the bink player. That is the little program that plays the intro movies.
To do this just rename your AVI folder (found in the folder that you installed HOI to) to AVI_back.
Try that and see if it helps.

Do you by any chance use a cordless mouse or a Logitech mouse or keyboard?

Also check your page file memory setting and free HD space on that drive in case it's filling up.

Page file memory is at:

Start-->Control Panel-->Performance & Maintenence-->System-->Advanced-->Performance-->Settings-->Advanced-->Virtual Memory

You should have at least 400MB devoted to virtual memory...preferably more in the order of 700MB or more. You can letXP manage this or set it manually (even spanning mulitple drives).

HD space will be in relation to the page file memory. Even if you've got 1GB or more available, XP can eat this up in a surprising hurry if you're window jumpoing a lot.

I´ve tried all the things you said, and I had no luck.
Not my keyboard nor my mouse are those listed,
I freed up some virtual memory (it had only 182mb, I am using 600mb inital and 600mb limit, but it didn´t work. In fact , the game seems to be crashing faster (ok, there is a possibility that this is due to the fact that I have been declared war at during test.
I am thankfull for your aid, and am looking for more, if you can continue to help. Ah, this crash also happens when opening lots of web pages at the same time, and once when i reset the pc it crashed right after windows opened. Ah this is getting so frustrating... seems like the PC hates me!

This sounds mostly like a resource issue...

Important questions:

- how much RAM do you have?

- how much free space do you have reported on your HD?

- what additional TSR's do you have running when you launch HoI?

well, lets go,
128 mb ram memory,
Intel (R)
Pentium(R) 4 CPU 1.70 ghz

7,66 free GB,
and what is a TSR?
How can I find what TSR I have?
I know you must be thinking ´´oh pesky n00bs´´ but I don´t really know, thanks for the help you are providing BTW.

Nuclear Winter,

TSR = Terminal(terminant?) Stay Resident or something like that. Basically they are small (or not so small sometimes) programs that run in the back ground. In winXP you can hit Ctrl-Alt-Del once then look at the processes tab.

My TSR´s:
taskmgr.exe
SVCHOST.EXE
nvsvc32.exe
ccPxySvc.exe
ctfmon.exe
spoolsv.exe
HPGS2WNF.EXE
HPGS2WND.EXE
Directcd.exe
CCAPP.EXE
NISUM.EXE
CCEVTMGR.EXE
EXPLORER.EXE
SVCHOST.EXE
SVCHOST.EXE
SVCHOST.EXE
SVCHOST.EXE
LSASS.EXE
SERVICES.EXE
WINLOGON.EXE
CSRSS.EXE
SMSS.EXE
system

directcd.exe

I have found that directcd.exe was causing problems with other programs that I've run. I don't know if it effects HOI because I've disabled directcd, but I suggest rebooting your PC and then shutting directcd.exe down by choosing it from the processes menu in the task manager and end process.

Nuclear Winter,
Also 128MB RAM w/ WinXP is just not enough. In theory it will run but you're really already maxed out just having the operating system running. Add HoI over that .......*shudders*

You will VASTLY improve your performance with a minimum of 256 and 500+ is far better.

Swap File

The one the easiest ways to tell if RAM is your problem is how much the hard drive is being accessed. If you're running HOI or other program and the hard drive is constantly cranking away and your system is running slowly that is a sure sign that you need more RAM.
When your system does not have enough RAM to run all of the programs, it uses the hard drive for RAM - swapping files back and forth from Physical RAM to the hard drive. The speed of physical RAM is measured in micro seconds and the speed of hard drives is measured in milli seconds - it may not seem like much of a difference but it is, with physical RAM being over 1000 times faster it really adds up!

Virtual Memory

1000MB Virtual memory won't make any difference except that it would take longer for the machine to finish booting (i.e. seem slower for the first few minutes after the machine started up).
Virtual Memory (Swap File) uses the hard drive so it is going to be considerably slower.
Windows 98/ME runs better with less memory than 2000 or XP. There is much more going on in the backround in XP compared to 98/ME, but don't think that makes 98/ME a better operating system because it's not, it only runs better with less RAM. 2000/XP needs 256MB RAM or more to run well depending on how many programs that you run at once. While 98/ME runs well with 128MB RAM. But the benefits of 2000/XP far outweigh the RAM/Performace issues.

You see, many other programs are crashing too, programs that shouldn´t, like teh net and such, so I dunno if it is only a matter o RAm. But anyway I will try to work out a solution.
I am sorry for taking you guys time,
Nuclear Winter

How long ago did you install XP?

I am afraid this is definately not a HOI related problem. I would definately suggest increasing your system memory, It will definately increase the speed your aplications are running and prolong the life span of your current computer.

Here are the realistic memory requirements.
Win ME requires 128 likes 256
Win XP requires 256 likes 512+
