Well I've been playing EU2 for years now, and never had any serious problems. But yesterday I upgraded the wireless network my house's 3 computers use, to a LinkSys Wireless-G Router with a PCI adaptor card in all PCs. Ever since, though, EU2 crashes on the Main Menu. Loads up to the menu perfectly but then the whole system just hangs. No alt-tab, no ctrl-alt-del, no nothing. I'm not sure if this is a game issue or a hardware issue. Help?

Try renameing the AVI folder to AVI_Back
It is a long shot but your new drivers could be causing a conflict.

Nope. No luck. The odd thing is that it seems to work for a couple of seconds before it hangs. I can sometimes even get to the scenario screen and select a country.

Given what appears to have caused the hang, the first thing I'd do is disable your network and try to see if that really is the problem.

Did you install a new Virus protection or firewall as well?

Well, just by right-clicking and disabling the network, things work perfectly.

Nope, that's the confusing thing. It was literally a case of insert the card, install the single driver for it, connect to the wireless network. I just don't understand it. I suppose I do have a solution now, of disabling the network to play. But I'd prefer not to have to do that.

I will ask jpd and Kb to take a look this is more up their alley.

Hmm.

Installing new wireless LAN adapter + activating it -> EU2 hangs.
Deactivating wireless, but not uninstalling it -> EU2 plays normally.

I would say that there is something really fishy going on here. Definately something that's interfering with the normal operation. I do have a couple of questions though.

1) Are the intro movies already disabled? If so, then the main menu would be the very first time after starting the game that the game is actually interacting with you, the player.

2) If you say "nothing works", how badly is it locked up? Does the mouse arrow still move, for example.

3) What OS version are you using? Come to think of it, use dxdiag to make a diagnostic dump of your config, and post that here.

Please run a DirectX Diagnostic:
Start menu –Run - then type Dxdiag, then select each tab across the top of the window, and run the tests on each tab. Then select “Save All Information” button in the lower right of the window. This will bring up a dialog box to allow you to select a name for the file where the information will be saved. You can save it right on the desktop as this will make it easy to find. Then copy the contents of that file from the start to the heading that says “DirectX components” then paste what you have copied into a post in this thread.

1) Yes, the AVI folder has been renamed.
2) The system completely hangs. The mouse stops moving, the game's music stops. No keyboard commands work, and the only thing I can do is reset the box.
3) Interestingly, when i tested the DirectDraw, the boxes and the bouncing box worked fine, but the fullscreen bouncing box caused the same problem.I didn't want to test the Direct3D in case the same thing happened, but I'll try it after this post.

Two things.

1 - When you have a total lockup like you describe, then you are most likely hit by the "infinite loop" lockup. Usually this is caused by a communications problem between main system and the AGP video board. Most of the cases are with VIA chipset systems, but you don't have one of those. The next likely candidate is the network adapter + driver. That one is probably messing about in a chunk of memory that the system has set aside for the video board.

2 - Main memory is listed as 318 MB. That's suspicious. Main memory should be listed as clear multiples of 64 MB, with at most 1 MB subtracted as reserved base memory for real mode (read: MS-DOS) stuff.

Could you go into the BIOS setup, and access the advanced chipset parameters? What is listed there as AGP Aperture size. And in the main BIOS page, what is listed as main memory size.

Another thing to look at is the software installed for the wireless cards. Some will install 3-4 programs that run in the background. I know some DLink cards install "Atheros Configuration Service" (acs.exe) that causes a lot of problems (and is not really required). What model card is installed?
