  • Europa Universalis: Rome
After installing a new version of directX, all my Eu3 engine games, including Rome, are super laggy. The game constantly stutters on and off, like if I'm scrolling the map, it'll scroll smoothly for about a second, then halt. This doesn't just affect scrolling, it affects everything. For example, I can't click on any menu items in-game unless it's in it's "run smoothly for a second" period.

The games this affects are:
EU: Rome
EU3: IN and HTTT
Victoria 2 demo <- Hugely disappointed about this

However, Hearts of Iron 3 is not affected at all.

My computer has a GeForce 9800, some dual-core intel running at 2 ghz, Vista 64-bit, 4 gigs of Ram.

I will reiterate that the game ran perfectly before I updated DirectX, so it's not my hardware.

I've tried updating my display drivers, and I have updated to an even newer directX; same problem.

I'm super sad about this, what should I do?:(

HAHAHA I FIXED IT! :D

For some reason I just had this crazy idea that it wasn't a graphics problem at all, but a music problem. I usually turn off music in paradox games, so I'm used to not hearing anything, but I thought it was strange that I was hearing nothing at all in the demo for Vicky 2 since I hadn't turned it off.

Then I thought that maybe the game was trying to render a wave form over and over again and failing. I have had this problem when programming games on a computer with messed up audio codecs.

So to force Victoria not to play music it all, I renamed the music directory.

PROBLEM SOLVED. :D

I assume this will work with Eu 3 and Rome too, but forget those old games 'cause I'm buying Vicky 2, oh yeah.

PS: The music for V2 is actually really nice, I'll probably add the mp3s to an itunes playlist to play while the game is running.

You could look for an update to your sound card driver. You could also try installing the k-lite codec pack.
