I have followed multiple threads and none of them seem to apply to my problem. I bought Victoria about 3 weeks ago and since then I have went through considerable anguish trying to get it to work. But, it seems that no matter what I do the game continues to crash to desktop. Whats worse, it seems like I can never find exactly why it does crash, it just crashes randomly during gameplay. Sometimes, it even crashes my entire computer and makes it reboot. I have completely uninstalled Victoria and then reinstalled it several times with the 1.03 patches. I have changed the game resolution. I have tried to fix my RAM, Audio and Video options in order to give Victoria my room. I dont know what else to do. Please Help!!!

Thanks :)

It would help to determine what's wrong, if you provide us with your current system specs.

Okay let's try some standard things.
1) Rename the AVI folder to AVI_back
2) Set the color depth to 16BIT
3) Turn off everything in the background like E-mail/ICQ/Messenger, Virus protection and everything in the system tray beside the clock.

If you have tried ALL of the above at the same time then:

Please run a DirectX Diagnostic:
Start menu –Run - then type Dxdiag, then select each tab across the top of the window, and run the tests on each tab. Then select “Save All Information” button in the lower right of the window. This will bring up a dialog box to allow you to select a name for the file where the information will be saved. You can save it right on the desktop as this will make it easy to find. Then copy the contents of that file from the start to the heading that says “DirectX components” then paste what you have copied into a post in this thread.

A system reboot can be caused by Power managment troubles, which could indicate a bad or underpowered power supply.

I also notice that you do not have much memory left on your primary partition.
It could be that swap files are having trouble.

How long can you play from a fresh boot before it shuts down, is it about the same amount of time each time it happens?

I checked my virtual memory settings, and there are 2535 mb currently allocated.
Power supply - could be, although I doubt it.
CstD happen randomly at least once every 30 minutes, sometimes more often. They seem to be caused by any action - scrolling the map, pressing some button, moving cursor over some button, just doing nothing particular. The game is running vine BTW, not choppy, not slow.

Are you sure? Is it not 2535 MB available, because your DxDiag only specified 237MB used, 2223MB available for the page file, which is your virtual memory.

If it is indeed 2535 MB allocated right now, you have one heck of a memory leak inside your system, causing it to claim more and more virtual memory until your partition holding the page file runs out of free space. If that's the case, then that would explain your random crashes.

2535 is what it says in control panel/system screen. Is there a way to check it more correctly ?

I didn't fully understand about the memory leak. Are you saying there's a memory leak in the game ? I would think any mem leaks are fixed by now.

There is. Press <ctrl><alt><del> to call up the task manager, and check what it lists as total allocated memory. That's the real amount of memory actually in use at any given point in time. It also keeps track of the largest amount that has been allocated during your current Windows session.

As for memory leaks in the game. I am not aware of any. If there is one, it must be so small that it's virtually undetectable on my system. I can run Vicky for hours on end without running into any kind of memory related difficulty. So, if you do notice a memory leak, it must be something else running on your PC.

Jan Peter

It sais 1048044 as total physical memory - but this looks like my RAM isn't it ?
And page file usage shows 241 MB and the indicator is empty. Would you be so kind as to explain what it means regaring my situation ? ;) And should I let this run while I play Victoria so see what's happening ?

1048044 total physical memory: That's indeed your installed RAM. The values in the groupbox below and to the left of the one holding this value are the ones that are really interesting. That box lists the currently assigned total amount, and the peak level.

It's not necessary to keep the task manager screen open while running Vicky. The task manager itself is always running in the background, and will keep track of those numbers. Just press <ctrl><alt><del> anytime you want to take a look at those numbers.

Jan Peter

What numbers should I keep an eye on, exactly ? The peak is 459076 while total commit charge is 229000 approximately. Does this makes any sence ?

I don't notice any memory leak at the moment, and there shouldn't be I think. Since CK no longer crashes after 1.03b so I conclude that there must me a problem with victoria, not my system.

A peak of 459 MB sounds about right for running Vicky, provided you don't run anything else concurrently. If something is leaking memory, then that number will steadily increase while you play Vicky.

If the game crashed while using 459 MB, which you say is normal, than there is no memory leak. I don't know what else to try, and no help from tech support :(
No help???

Well I have responded and jpd has also been helping, I cannot be on 24/7. I am sorry if you feel you have not been getting any help.

In reviewing the above information you supplied, I would like to ask who the publisher of your version is. Their logo will be on the CD.

I also suggest you scan for viruses, so that can be eliminated.

I'm sorry, I'm just too frustrated. The publishers are 1C and Snowball. BTW I was going to start a thread, asking whether those are official publishers in Russia and CIS or piracy, but didn't know where to put it. Maybe you could clear this out for me. (Seems official though, and Snowball seems to specialize on Paradox games only)

Snowball is the Publisher, they add a lot of wierd Copy protection stuff in their games so that they cannot be played outside of Russia. For instance you need a Russian version of Windows to play, not another version with Russian localization.

That may be your problem, I suggest contacting them for details.
