Summary

Game loses all sound seemingly for no reason, at random.

Description

I've been binging on Vic 3 this last week after about a year away from the game and have been struggling with some curious performance issues (whose pattern I still haven't nailed yet but when I do, I'll come here to report) and one of the weird behaviours the game's been having is that on occasion its audio just straight-up stops working.

I noticed the issue some four times, as I usually play with the game sound diminished while I either talk on Discord or watch something on Youtube on the other monitor so it's not easy to spot it.

Checking the logs, it seems to be something related to the FMOD sound engine and how it plays ball with my audio driver - I remember in the past Rimworld also had on its logs that FMOD wasn't happy with something I was doing when watching Youtube on the other monitor. Crusader Kings III however seems to work just fine.

For context, I have five different audio output options on my computer: a wireless headset, the output on the motherboard, and the three monitors I have attached to the computer (each using a different type of port, DVI-D, Displayport, and HDMI) and I switch between two of them from time to time when playing (the headphones and the Displayport monitor, respectively), but I don't think the issue is related to where the audio is coming out as swapping between the output methods doesn't seem to cause an issues, the one thing consistent is that the game goes silent on occasion when something else is also using audio. I am also not 100% sure if the issue only happens with Youtube, or if it also happens when I'm on Spotify.

I am also on That Dreadful Version of Windows 11, the one that keeps causing all sorts of issues, so I am sure this doesn't help matters much.

The issue is save-game independent.

Steps to reproduce

1 - Have an extra monitor
2 - Boot the game on Monitor 1, and start playing a video playlist on Monitor 2.
3 - Play the game on Monitor 1 as normal, and spot if the audio on the game eventually disappears when a new video starts, or when a video resumes after buffering. Focus is on the game.
4 - Bonus step: Zoom in out of the Paper Map and observe the log file get spammed with the following below; I'll only paste the entries for one specific second there, but you guys will surely get the idea.

You will also notice on the attached log file that there is an error involving a Veiled Protectorate Event there; I don't know what causes it but it's harmless and unrelated, I think it's some sort of logic flaw related to the Ottomans no longer being around in my game save and Egypt being my Puppet, you can ignore it; it pops up sporadically through the five log files that are filled with the same handler error as pasted above.

Hello. We did not receive any similar tickets in the past and don't have any decent reproduction for it. We raised it with the Audio team just in case and in the meantime I'll move the thread to the Technical Support forum.

This only happens when you have other audio playing, is that right?

When it happens, what do you do to recover from it? Stop the other audio, swap to a different audio output channel, exit/restart the game, reboot?

DXDIAG is a program you run from the Windows search box on the task bar. After running it will open a window and start collecting info with a progress bar in the lower-left corner. When it completes click the 'save all information' button and save it to a file then attach that file here.
IF dxdiag.txt fails to attach here, rename it to dxdiag.log , or zip it up.

I want to ask this:

Have you reloaded a save game, or did an exit to menu and then start a fresh game or loaded a save, before you noticed the sound disappearing?

Because that's what I'm experiencing with Stellaris.

If I start the game from Steam, and then either start a fresh game or load a save, and then just play from there, it's all fine. But when I, during game play, either exit to menu to start a new game or reload a save a couple of times, the game sound will start disappearing. First the center speaker will stop, then a while later the left front speaker stops, and then, again, a while later the front right speaker will stop. Leaving only the two rear speakers producing any sound.

I haven't checked if eventually the sound will disappear completely, as at the point where only the two rear speakers still produce sound I usually quit the game entirely. Start the Windows Media Player to play an audio recording to verify my sound card hasn't died, and when the sound plays on all speakers (which it always does), I start Stellaris again. At which point the sound is back on all speakers. To reiterate, it's always in the same order the sound starts to fail. Center first, then front left, then front right.

For me, the conclusion is obvious. The game engine (of Stellaris) has a resource leak in the quit-to-menu/restart/reload sequence which causes the audio playback to become low on resources. When I do even more save game reloads or exit-to-menu and new game starts, eventually the game engine of Stellaris completely breaks and UI elements themselves start disappearing (such as the main game menu, the in-game console, the top bar, the outliner). At which point you have to kill the game outright with Process Explorer.

And if, for you, the sound also starts disappearing after a couple of game restarts/reloads, then it's likely the same, or similar cause as mine.
