Ok before i start i've done a fair bit of reserch on this, and yes i have read the Victoria FAQ on this ( i also own Victoria and it have never exibited the same problems).

My problem is that late in the game around 1942 plus, (i assume due to army build up) the game begins to slow to a crawl. Other instances where this occurs are in certain mods (for example the modern day 2 scenario, and using the alien invasion cheat).

I do appricate that more units logically equals more processing power needed however there are three notable objections i have to this being the end of the matter.

1. This problem never occurs on any other paradox games i assume running off a similar engine no matter how large the armies ect of the world are, e.g victoria and EU2.

2. It never used to happen when i first got the game back when it was version 1.0 or nothing. (can't rember more spesifically than that sorry)

3. My computer frankly should take this in its stride.
Amd Athlon 64 3000+ @ 2.0ghz
1gig Pc3200 ram.
Nvidia 6800 gt 256 mb ram (not that this matters i imagine.
Asus K8N-E deluxe

Logically in my mind, this just shoulnt be happening.

Thus any help would be greatly appricated.

Thank you.

The game slows down with the more units you have, this does seam logical to me, since the more units on the board the more calculations the game must make.
You apear to be saying it has nothing to do with your hardware or settings since you have tried everything in the FAQ. So my question would be, then why are you posting in the harware support forum?
I am not trying to be confrontation here, one always runs the risk of being misunderstood when not communicating face to face, I just do not understand?

Indeed i admit it dose seem logical on the surface however im finding my self fustrated and annoyed by the apprent slow down which could be at first atributed to hardward not being up to the task (i was also under the impression this was a tech support forum not just hardware) which due to my specs i find a bit hard to belive, espeically when such slow downs (that being the game impossible to play as a month will take around an hour regarless of speed setting) are occuring with around 1092 land units in total in the world (where it prehaps 3 timse that i could understand). Especially considering with the 36gc mod there are 919 units in the world (land that is) and the game will fly along at extreme speed only stoping at 0.00 am beifiely as dimplomatic offers ect come in.

thus it appears to me that surely this cannot be right and that either something majorily wrong is going on with my hardware or some sort of strange software conflict is going on. Which is why aftering reading the victoria faq and still in dispair i've posted here.

Okay let's try some standard things.
1) Make sure you have the latest patch for the game.
2) Rename the AVI folder to AVI_back
3) Set the color depth to 16BIT
4) Turn off everything in the background like E-mail/ICQ/Messenger, Virus protection and everything in the system tray beside the clock.
5) Run a virus/ Spyware check
6) Update your Windows, update your Video card drivers and audio card drivers. Then repeat steps 1-4.

If none of that helps then:
Please run a DirectX Diagnostic:
Start menu –Run - then type Dxdiag, then select each tab across the top of the window, and run the tests on each tab. Then select “Save All Information” button in the lower right of the window. This will bring up a dialog box to allow you to select a name for the file where the information will be saved. You can save it right on the desktop as this will make it easy to find. Then copy the contents of that file from the start to the heading that says “DirectX components” then paste what you have copied into a post in this thread.

Also

Have the latest version 1.3a i belive

16 bit change dose not help im afriad (i assumed you ment just on the windows desktop)

I've tired turning absolutely every bar HOI2 off and changing its priority in the windows task manager.

Got the newest drivers as well.

Running a spyware virus scan now.

And thank you for your help.

I have encountered similar problems with my installation of Hoi2.

After experimenting, it seems that any unusual performance degredation (i.e. not just the slowdown expected by massive unit build-ups, but something further) Seems to be caused by the particular save game file being fragmented.

It seems likely that because of the way Hoi2 works, this file needs to be accessed / modified every game hour to keep up with events etc.

So a fragment within this file is going to have a major effect on game performance.

By re-installing Hoi2 & defragmenting after all; updates, save files, db, mods etc, have been moved to the program file folder. I seem to be able to dramatically boost game performance.

I probably do this once every couple of days (real time) as it only takes 15mins or so if defrag is performed regulary.

Also, bear in mind to defrag the drive before you install any Hoi files. This will have the effect of keeping all Hoi files in the same physical area of your hard drive.

This means the time needed to access one part of your data in a particular location, in comparison to another in a different location. will be shorter.

= Faster game.

Of course your problem may be totaly unrelated. But this has helped with me.

Nothing stands out as being wrong, I notice you do have one VIA driver, I know the 5in1 VIA drivers are known to be buggy but I do not think they would cause your HOI2 to slow down.
How long since you defraged your HD?

a few weeks, it din't seem to help last time i did it but i will try again in a bit.

As for the save game files, yeah that seems to make some sense, the only problem is i get the degradation problem whenever i load a mod up with a 'large' amount of units at its start as well.

Did you try the game without any mods?

I think that you may have found the problem in your original post.

You wrote: 2. It never used to happen when i first got the game back when it was version 1.0 or nothing. (can't rember more spesifically than that sorry)

I too used to not have slow downs on my machine in 1.0 and now i do with 1.3b. Btw my machine is a 3.2ghz with 2 gig ram and 256 mb video.

The major change since 1.0 to 1.3b -- a much improved AI with many new AI scripts. Also it is my understanding that the AI now does alot more calculations at the 0:00 mark.

The person to confirm these hypothesis would be Lothos.

The same perforance degredation used to occur in HOI1 especially in 1.04 - 1.06 and even more so when you used CORE.

My 2 cents.

Yes i've been trying without mods as well, for example the 1944 scenario, it has the same problem abeit reduced to a playable level. Its still very present and annoying however.

As for reducing back to an older version, thats all very well and good and indeed it makes sense but still we are talking about moving back to a version of game where it honeslty wasunt 'as fun' to play. Surely such degradation can't soley be down to this alone.

Actually, it can.

The AI has to be evaluated periodically for each and every unit in the game that is not under direct human control. Unfortunately, making the AI less stupid (or smarter, depending on your point of view ;)) requires more CPU cycles to evaluate more complex algoritms.

As for you original point #1. I guess you haven't played Victoria or Crusader Kings to their conclusion.

Especially Victoria has a tendency to slow down considerably whenever one of the western powers starts a war with China. And for the same reason. A truckload of military units than are placed under active AI control.

The usual advise is to set the game speed to "normal". I myself actually scale down the speed even further when I am at war. I can't properly cope with multi front operations at game speeds of normal or higher anyway. And when you scale down the game speed, you increase the tick time from turn to turn (or: game hour to game hour), giving the AI more room to do it's thing without interfering with the other stuff too much.

Besides, this is nothing new in computer games. All games with lots of individually controlled units suffer from this, from the original Command and Conquer right upto the latest Age of Empires. ;)

I have played a game to conclusion as britian and no i never had such problems in victoria.

The problem is not to so much that going slowly in war time (As indeed normal speed is appropriate there) its that during the intermitant peace times as the Ai dosent disband its armies these peroids are utterly unplayable.

And if you keep the game speed at "normal" during what you call the intermittent peace periods?

I am glad that my hypothesis has some weight to it.

Numerous RTS and strategy games have this same issue in the later stages of the game. MOO2 had that problem, civ3 and civ4 have that problem etc.

I do however feel your pain about the performance issues in the mid to late game where things are rather dull event wise (40-41 waiting to declare war on USSR etc.) but i find that during active times (like end war) that the slowdown is welcome respite to think etc.

Now from a technical programming point of view i do not know how much paradox is using free RAM to preload frequently used data and i assume that they are using as much as they can.

I do not foresee any immediate changes to code to resolve any performance issues (perhaps they will in Doomsday since that expansion requires code changes).

My 2cents.
