I noticed that no matter which scenario you choose, the settings are the same. Which are the recommended settings considering:

1. Random/Historical Events
2. Missions
3. Enemy hostility (?)

I mean, is 'normal' the best to use if you want somewhat correct historical enemies or what?

1) Historical events only. Some of the random events - e.g. the appearance of conquistadors in Austria - are ridicoulous. Events are mostly beneficial however, so if you find the game to be too easy, turn them off completely.

2) I prefer the standard game, as it is the only game type that ensures that the game runs until 1792.

3) Computer aggressivity should be set to normal or aggressive for maximum competition. The wild setting apparently ends up with the AI 'bleeding itself to death'.

Um. I re-read your question. Let's try again:

2) Turn them off. Most missions are too easy (no Spanish in British Isles give 50 VP) to accomplish, giving you an unfair advantage over the AI. Granted, of course, that you don't select the VP hunt game type.

If you want to play a Victory Point game - in which case your greatest enemy is Spain. The only way you are ever going to beat Spain in victory points is either to beat them bloody and/or have missions on. If you want to play a game for victory points without being forced to trash Spain at some point, I suggest you play with Missions On.

No, missions suck. In reality, countries did not just get random (and usually impossible) goals. If you play as a minor nation, you will not be able to do any mission except keep province X. A typical exmaple is 'Wurtemburg must conquer Austria in 5 years'...

Ehmm
The playing for VP & Missions are key ingredients for EU (BG & CG) not to be yet another 'kill everything that moves' type of game.
Sure, if you manually edit the game to be able to play minors it might get unbalanced (duhhh ... what do you think happens if you mess with the code).
If you hovever like to play a game where you can actually win even by not beeing extreemly aggressive, keep Missions on and hoard in VP's for the 'defensive' Mission throught the game.

Random missions might not make a lot of sense, but when you can select your own missions, you can select ones that have some historical relevance. And yes, they seem to be the only way you can hope to beat Spain if you are playing a victory point game.
