I've just updated the game to 3.8 and it now starts with the wrong resolution, in a way that the mouse cursor don't correspond to the image on the screen. It also puts CPU and GPU to maximum frequency (even in the home screen) so computer overheats very quickly.

Checking other posts I've tried:
- Ticking "disable fullscreen optimizations" in the .exe compatibility properties. Doesn't fix the resolution.
- Disabling VSync and selecting a refresh rate of 60. Doesn't fix the resolution.
- Launching the game in Borderless fullscreen mode. This fixes the resolution but the GPU still goes crazy so it's unplayable.

PC specs are:
Win 11
32 GB RAM
i7-11700KF @ 3.6 GHz
NVidia GeForce RTX 3080

System resolution is 3440x1440 and I have an ultra wide monitor.

Note that I haven't had this issue with the same computer before 3.8.

Thanks!

In the launcher, go to Game Settings, and ensure that your resolution is set correctly. Also switch between Borderless, fullscreen or windowed mode. Since we've also recently transitioned to DX11, you can try updating your video drivers.

If that doesn't help:, Please do a full clean re-install:

move any valued save games elsewhere, and user empire designs.txt from /Documents/Paradox Interactive/Stellaris/ if you have made any custom empires or races.
"uninstall" in Steam-Stellaris
manually delete both the Steam/SteamApps/common/Stellaris AND Documents/Paradox Interactive/Stellaris folders
re-install game in Steam, run a Steam Verify when done.
add stellaris.exe to the exceptions list of your antivirus app; ESPECIALLY if you have Windows Defender, add it to the Ransomware "Apps Allowed Through" list.
start the game with no mods active and test

In particular you need to make sure there are no files or folders left under either the Steam Stellaris or Documents Stellaris locations, before installing again.

If that still doesn't help:
DXDIAG is a program you run from the Windows search box on the task bar. After running it will open a window and start collecting info with a progress bar in the lower-left corner. When it completes click the 'save all information' button and save it to a file then attach that file here.

Please attach here your Documents/Paradox Interactive/Stellaris/settings.txt and pdx_settings.txt .
From your Documents/Paradox Interactive/Stellaris/logs/ folder, attach here system.log , error.log .

I've updated video card drivers and tried a clean re-install but problem still happens. I manage to get the correct resolution if using windowed borderless, but GPU maxes in home screen (although it seems to calm down in game,).

I'm attaching the requested files in case it helps.

Thanks!

At 60hz the game should not be able to overheat your GPU. What actual fps are you seeing in the main menu, then in the game itself?

Thanks for suggesting this, I've checked and this is the reason it overheats.

When I start the game, both the Steam and the NVidia FPS counters indicate that in the main menu it's running more than 2500 FPS. This reduces to about 300-400 in the civ selection/creation menu. It runs at 60 once I go into game.

Oddly, when I exit to menu from the game, the main menu runs fine at 60 FPS, unless I minimize (alt-tab) the game, in which case it shoots to 2500+ FPS again while the game is in the background.

I've tried different combinations and the above pattern seems to repeat each time. The FPS counters are well correlated to the fans in the PC taking off so I have no reason to think that they are showing false readings.

About the wrong resolution at start/cursor being displaced, this seems to have fixed with hotfix 2.8.2.

Thanks!

Edit: played a bit this afternoon and noticed that when clicking continue game from the launcher, the game runs at about 300 fps (so not respecting the 60 fps limit in the configuration). However if I tab out of the game and back, it limits itself to 60 again.

Please go into the Bug Reports forum here, and report the game's failure to respect the refreshRate=60 settings.txt parameter, thanks.

If you have any way of limiting the fps by other means, I think GeForce Experience can do this for instance, please do!

This game is cooking my CPU even with a cooler pad and max fan. Is there a setting to change or edit?

This thread is actually about GPU overheating, as it turned out. CPU is a different matter, are you sure all fans are working and your thermal paste is okay?

To answer your question, I'm not aware of any game setting that affects CPU usage, no.

Only in battles does my cpu temp increase. Fans are maxed at 8500 rpm. Map I am at 60 C CPU and 50 Gpu. In battles CPU jumps to 95+C. My GEForce app isn't recognizing the game.

Do try unloading GeForce Experience before starting the game.

This game is multi-threaded but one core will typically carry more load than the others; however there are Windows settings that can change that. Are you seeing anything in Task manager in that area; say one core doing everything and no others doing anything?

What do you mean "unloading" ? Currently GeForce recognizes the game but has no control to optimize it. Under the Nvidia control panel and in the in game options the 3070 is selected.
My monitor is 300hz. I set the Vsync to 25%. That increased play time a bit before overheat.
When bringing up the MSI control center, how I monitor Temps and load. CPU is constantly working harder that GPU at all times. Entering game battles is what really causes problems.
