Did try the run as admin, didn't work. Installed Visual C++ latest version , didn't work. My game says running when launching from steam, then it fails to start after it says synchronising. Will you bee looking in to this issue with an update or so?
We can't fix this issue in a game patch if yours is not a game problem, but some Windows or other app issue. We have not yet determined that here as we have no detail on your particular issue.

Most the the posts above are on 32bit Windows, are you too?

For the info of all: the game should now run on 32bit Windows when you revert to 3.2.1, the last 32bit version.

Played CK2 this morning, then new STEAM update happened and CK2 doesn't work anymore. Nothing else changed.
I tried re-installing the game, run as admin, run compatibility mode, install C++, nothing allows the game to work since the steam update this afternoon.

I'm having the exact same issue. Both the launcher and the game itself will crash after like 20 seconds tops regardless of what I do. I am running 64-bit Windows 10 and I've successfully been running the game since it was first released.

Edited to add: After playing around with it I was only successfully able to get the launcher to not crash after rolling back to 3.2.1, anything later than that has the problem, so it is definitely something due to the way 64-bit support was implemented.

Believe me we'd know if no one could run the game since it went 64bit. I am sure your issues are elsewhere.

Please both do a full **clean** re-install:

- move any valued save games elsewhere
- "uninstall" in Steam-CK2
- manually delete both the Steam/SteamApps/common/CK2 AND Documents/Paradox/CK2 folders
- re-install game in Steam, run a Steam Verify when done.
- add ck2game.exe to the exceptions list of your antivirus app; ESPECIALLY if you have Windows Defender, add it to the Ransomware "Apps Allowed Through" list.
- start the game with no mods active and test

In particular make sure there are no files or folders left under either the Steam CK2 or Documents CK2 locations, before installing again.

IF that doesn't help each make your own ne wthreads with full system and problem details, thanks.

Hi again, I'm on 64-bit Win 10. Steam updated my CKII and after that it wouldn't start. I'd say it's a game problem since it stopped after updating but not sure

Again, we''d know if the game didn't work for anyone since 3.3.0

Exit the Steam app entirely and run ck2game.exe , what happens? Any error?

IF NEITHER OF THOSE HELP:
DXDIAG is a program you run from a command prompt or the Windows start menu 'run' dialog box (or 'search programs' in Windows 7 or later). After running it will open a window and start collecting info with a progress bar in the lower-left corner. When it completes click the 'save all information' button and save it to a file then attach that file here.

Please attach your Documents/Paradox/CK2/settings.txt.
From your Documents/Paradox/CK2/logs/ folder, attach system.log .

I can't run it (ck2game.exe), I get the following error message: Can't start the program correctly (0xc00007b), It might very well be something completley out of your control but many people seem to have a similar experience

Edit: PS. after googling a bit It could be my hard drive, Idk Ill try uninstall steam and Ck2 and we'll see if it solves it. KR /The Fylkir

Install ALL these Microsoft modules:

https://www.microsoft.com/en-au/download/details.aspx?id=8328
https://www.microsoft.com/en-au/download/details.aspx?id=13523
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=52685
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=8109
(run dxsetup.exe after extracting from this download)

Let us know what happens with each one please.

Then, I've just seen one report that uninstalling VC++ 2017 and installing 2015 (the 3rd one above) helped ... it should not be like that of course! But something to try.

Sorry if it's not ok to post here but i was having the exact same problem, did everything suggested here and more with no luck for weeks. Then i noticed my NordVPN app would launch and immediately crash as well so i checked their site and they said uninstall MSI Afterburner which i did and not only did that fix the NordVPN app but it fixed CK2 which no longer crashes!

Interestingly, Microsoft, in their usual arrogant and disruptive style, took down the sought for VC++ 2015, and we are stuck with the dysfunctional omni one of 2015, 2017 and 2019...
It seems they are hellbent that this does not work. Ties into a long history of disloyalty on their end, via Hotmail they took down for not using it every week, for their MSN takedown, their Bing and so on. Skype etc... Many flawed initiatives from MS.

Tried all, none worked.

Good to know.
That used to be a program along with others (Evolve, Dicsord etc) that caused startup/launch issues.

BTW, I took away all DLC, and I own absolutely all DLC, clocked 1100 hours on the game, so I hope for some serious service here. :)
*sigh*
To get "serious service" here it's better to start your own serious thread with serious and precise information. ;)
Reminder, similar symptons don't necessarily mean you got the same cause, that's why me-too threads don't work well.
Just my recomendation based on what's common to do in this subforum.

Hello there.
Up until just a few days ago the game worked without any issues for me, but today the game is stone dead for me XD.

I have tried reinstalling ck2 several times by now, but the boot up proses keeps crashing after a few seconds.
I have tried checking the integrity of the local files, but no problems there.
I have tried launching the game directly from the folder in admin mode ( without active DLC, i might add)
i have tried the c++ file update runabout , no success.
I have tried whit every version of the game (beta) just to get the game to launch but it just don't work.

Soo.. I am kinda at the end of my rope here. Any suggestions on how i can solve this mess?

(EDIT) "0xc0000409 stack overflow" was the root of my troubles as it turned out , a friend and me managed to figure that out eventually .
"Go into Windows Defender Security Center -> Virus & Threat Protection -> Virus & Threat Protection settings and there click on "Allow an app through controlled folder access". You find this under the Headline "Controlled folder access". And there add you the CK2game.exe" if you get the same fault code, and it should all work out ;)

Hello there,
I solved the problem for me...so read below and check what you need to do and let me know if it worked for you.

After a crash during my game when i tried to start the game the launcher wasnt even appearing anymore.I tried many solutions but nothing was working.

I reinstalled the game 3-4 times nothing...i was keep deleting everything in the folder C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Crusader Kings II to make sure that everything was deleted...nothing...

Eventually i figured out the problem and i fixed it .How? The answer is simple...

I was keep focusing deleting only the C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Crusader Kings II but i was missing the fact that in my documents there was a paradox folder with files inside gfx, logs, mod, dlc signature ,pdx login etc etc....

So what you need to do...is DELETE EVERYTHING INSIDE THIS FOLDER AND REINSTALL THE GAME....

Let me summarize now the steps.

FIRST you UNINSTALL THE GAME....
CHECK THE C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Crusader Kings II .This folder should NOT beTHERE ANYMORE...
THEN CHECK YOUR DOCUMENTS AND FIND THE FOLDER OF PARADOX
C:\Users\(YOUR USERNAME FOR YOUR PC)\Documents\Paradox Interactive\Crusader Kings II
AND DELETE EVERYTHING INSIDE THE FOLDER...
Then perform a clean installation and go check both destinations and you will see for the first destination that the game is installed
(C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Crusader Kings II).
THEN check your documents and you will notice the game is there
C:\Users\(YOUR USERNAME FOR YOUR PC)\Documents\Paradox Interactive\Crusader Kings II with these files inside ( gfx, logs, mod, dlc signature ,pdx login).

Launch the game and you will see the launcher appearing at least it did for me...

if it will work for you ....then drink a beer on my name :)

I hope i helped you .

Tried all the fixes here suggested. Nothing has worked for me. Able to play eu4 still so it's something ck2 specific. Hell I don't even get an error like some of these guys. Just stops loading after I click play and then shuts down I guess. Can't figure it out for the life of me...

Just to be clear launching as admin didn't work. Uninstalling and deleting everything didn't work. Verifying didn't work. C++ didn't work unless Im Installing the wrong ones? But I installed all the recent ones?

However super confused since eu4 runs fine... Mostly fine.. the launcher gives me some issues by giving trouble activating mods and such

Closing this thread as it is way off the original topic of 32bit apps now.

Anyone having CK2 problems PLEASE start your own thread - not "me too" post in someone else's - and provide full system details and problem history there. Thanks!
