I installed the EU2 CD and I installed Direct X 8 and everything seemed to load just fine. But when I double click the icon or even choose play for the Autorun the game won't even begin to start. The CD drive runs for a few seconds, then stops and that's it. When I Ctrl Alt Del, EU2 is listed at the bottom of the files there, but there isn't a "Not Responding" or anything like that. After reading some info on here I thought maybe it was cause I had downloaded the patch and installed it, but I uninstalled the game and even uninstalled EU. Then I reinstalled EU2 and the same thing is happening.

I have a Gateway pentium II 450 mhz, 256 MB RAM, CD-DVD drive. Don't know the mfg of the video card but if I remember correctly there is 4 MB of video RAM.

Any help is GREATLY appreciated.

You haven't told us what OS you have, but the first thing to try is renaming the AVI dir under EU2 to anything else. If that doesn't help see the "Running problems" sticky thread at the top of this forum.

Oops !

Sorry about that. It's Win98. I'll try renaming the directory now.

Nothing

Just renamed the avi folder to my initials and the same thing is still happening.

Try updating your drivers

Get the latest hardware drivers for your video and sound card available from the distributor (you can find out what the hardware is by going into the device settings under 'system' in the control panel). This can help in some cases... I've fixed a few problems with various games by doing this.

ACrusader,

it's worth disabling any background programmes that might be chewing up system resources (antivirus programmes, media utilities and such) before running EU2.

Also run DXDIAG (click START, then RUN, type in dxdiag and click OK) to see if there are any problems with your DIRECTX installation.

Ok

Thanks Kez,

I'll check those things out when I get home from work.

Thanks

Still a no go

Well, I've been slowly working down the list of suggestions and still no dice on getting the game to run. I'm probably one of the unlucky ones tht it just won't run on my machine.

I believe you have a copy protection problem. I will ask you to e-mail Nabil Yared from Strategy First at nyared@strategyfirst.com and tell him you have a copy protection problem. Mention this thread (provide a link) and tell him it was I who told you to e-mail him. He should send you a patch but he will probably ask you to fax him a proof of purchase (like your bill for example).

Viper

Wanted to thank you for your help. I got the patch and it took care of the problem.

I aim to serve  :D

I'm actually having close to the same problem. Here's the skinny:

I try to run the game and it never even starts up. I hit the task manager and EU2 isn't even running. I went through the entire checklist for if the game doesn't run and none of it worked. Here's my specs:

Europa Universalis II US version 1.04

Windows 98

K6-500Mhz

about 188 Mb RAM

21 Gb free on my hard disk

Not sure what the video card is - it's built in to my SiS motherboard, as is the sound card

Not sure about the CD - if you need it I'll crack open the case and check

you'll need to do the same as Acrusader.

Nabil will probably ask you for a receipt though.

Another Issue

Octavius,

I had my response from Nibel in less then 24 hrs. Worked out just fine.

Viper, now for another question. I dl'd the 1.05 patch and installed it and I'm having the same problem. So what I did was just reuse the .exe file I got from Nibel figuring the important data files are the important parts to change. Well, when I start the game, it still says v 1.04 on the screen where you pick single player, etc. But, since Bohemia doesn't declare protestant in 1420's anymore I'm guessing it's actually 1.05 and the patch is running ok. Is this correct assumption?

See my pm.

Same problem. I tried to install the 1.05 (NA) patch on EU2 (US). Well, I assume it's a US version, since the eu2.exe specifies that the game's language is "english (united states)". (Is there a difference between NA versions and US versions?) I followed all your suggestions on the "Running Problems - Please read before posting" thread. The game still doesn't start.

My configuration:

- Toshiba 2100 CDT
- Game version: EU2 (1.05)
- Win98 se
- AMD K6-2 400
- 192MB Ram
- 2,33 GB free space on HD
- Video card: S3 Virge M5 (2MB)
- Sound card: ESS Maestro 2E
- CD-ROM: TEAC CD-224E-B (Not sure about that one...)
- Ethernet card: GVC 10/100 Fast Ethernet PC Card

BTW, I ran dxdiag and failed a Direct3D test. Here is the message: Failure at step 5 (GetDeviceCaps): HRESULT = 0x8876086a (3D not available)

Thanks!

EU2 worked fine with 1.04. My problems started with 1.05.

Perhaps you should just keep on going with 1.04...

As for my problem, I'm still waiting for the end of the weekend. Hopefully everything's going well at the office, that the fax was recieved, approved, etc. Well, time for sleep and dreams of european conquest....
