I'm on a Dual Core Pentium (I know this is below system recommendation), 6 GB and a 2 GB Nvidia GTX 960. Windows 10 Pro. No third party apps running except Steam (and Discord sometimes).

- Played 20+ hours straight in version 1.0 but needed to apply the workaround for the november crash issue. After that game worked smooth for me, even not much stuttering.

- Installed HOTFIX, game stuck on loading screen InitGame.

- Only two times I managed to start the game in windowed mode 1024 x 768 and changed to the right settings afterwards ingame. I was playing an hour with top performance and not stuttering. I saved my game, closed the game and restarted. Same problem. But even in windowed mode low res the game won't start anymore.

- Randomware protection is disabled. Windows Defender have exception for both private and public for Imperator. DXDiag only show some common Windows 10 error:
RADAR_PRE_LEAK_64 but not for Imperator.

- All my 1k other games (also newer games like Thea II, Civ VI, Borderlands III, ElderScrolls online etc) and all Paradox games I have with (almost) all DLC also works fine. I don't have other issues with my PC. Only Imperator will not start anymore after 1.0.1 update.

I can only imagine that support for my older hardware is dropped in the hotfix and I never be able to play Imperator on my system.

I paid for Deluxe version and Soundtrack DLC total of 60 bucks and not refunded anything since I was playing 20 hours without problems.
I'm at the point to give up, but I will make a ticket for support at least.

Thanks everyone, also Andrew from Paradox for the help anyway.

I think is not possible that a game have all this problems, I had payed 39,99€!!!!. When paradox will give us a full game to play whitout all of this? Then the november bug now the Initgame bug. I'm beginning to lose my patience for this game. I think that for now a bad review is coming

I understand your frustration, my whole week was dedicated to play Imperator Rome after 1000 hours in Aggressors Ancient Rome and wanted to compare.
The week was only a week of frustration.
Still I refuse to use the review system to make my point. Imperator is a beautiful game made with a lot of passion I believe.
I just want a fair and honset answer if support for older hardware is dropped by last HOTFIX. That's all. Or a new fix.

Yeah, just frustration and a desire for answers

Not intentionally of course. But if you have below spec hardware any patch may happen to stop the game working or working well enough to play. Our games are simply not tested on unsupported hardware.

Note there is a beta patch 1.0.2 out now, may as well try that.

But the reported symptom of running okay in 1.0.0, then running okay once in 1.0.1, but crashing there a second time until you revert to 1.0.0 makes no sense at all to me.

One thing though; any time you exit the game check in Task Manager and see if there are still threads relating to the game running - I've seen a few reports of that. If so kill them in Task Manager then reboot; does that help?

Thank you.

I played 20+ hours in 1.0. Also 1.0 always start for me. Never get a crash.

1.0.1 doesn't work since the beginning. But with help from other forum members I managed to get it to run once. Once I was able to bypass the InitGame loading screen when I was set my screen to windowed mode in a very low resolution.

No instances related to Paradox or Imperator or the launcher are running when I quit Imperator in taskmanager. I also see the game is not running in Steam anymore after I close it. That problem does not effect me at least.

I will try 1.0.2 now with my fingers crossed.

How you managed to do that?

I think he means how you got the game to run. Im curious as well

I won't get the game to run anymore.

Not with 1.0.1 and not with 1.0.2. It's stuck at InitGame. It doesn't show the main menu at all. In taskmanager game is not responding (with only 500 mb ram in use and about 50% from my cpu power and 0 % gpu power).

The only way to get the game to run is uninstall it, delete the user folder and start 1.0. In that case InitGame is showing only a few seconds and the game starts normally.
Something since HOTFIX doesn't pass InitGame and only Paradox know why.

I understand Paradox statement that they do not test unsupported hardware.

I was just lucky that the release version 1.0 worked for 20 hours and all my other Paradox games works as well.
Now the HOTFIX is released and the game won't start anymore.
I hope they can understand that is a bit of a bummer after many hours of play.

But it is how it is. When I get my new PC hopefully this winter Imperator is probably for sale 50% off.

Thanks again.

Change the UI scaling in Interface tab. Also apply a borderless or fullscreen native resolution if you manage to start in windows mode. It will solve it.
But I'm not sure if you can launch it again with those settings.
If you want to play you must to launch in windowed mode everytime. Is the only way

For one reason I managed to get 1.0.2 launched as well. In windowed mode. In low resolution and after deleting the user files (except my pdx settings with everything set to low) I kept that one.

I also notice a difference in the 1.0 user file and the 1.0.1 and 1.0.2 user file. The cache and terrain cache folder is missing or not generated in the last versions for me. That's probably where the InitGame got stuck. I copied the cache and terrain cache folder created with 1.0 and put it in the user folder after installing 1.0.1 or 1.0.2.

It also appears that if I start to use other apps while Imperator is loading, like Steam chat, using forums or anything else on my PC, Imperator will launch at certain moment. But I leave my PC idle while Imperator is loading, it get stuck forever on "not responding".

Another thing I notice that if I have my taskmanager open while loading Imperator, game will directly stop responding after launch.

Have you by any chance hidden the Documents/Paradox Interactive folder? This was breaking my game, leading to instant crashes after clicking "Play"

No. It's not hidden. It also was not crashing directly after hitting play. It shows the load entities....InitGame and get stuck.

But surprisingly enough the trick I used that worked to get the game start in Windows mode also works for Fullscreen for me now.

I can start 1.0.2 fullscreen now, the only thing I have to do is make sure I use any other app while Imperator is loading. It will bypass the InitGame at some point while this is not happening if Imperator is the only app in use. It will stuck forever in that case.

Here a complete manual (I'm just a simple user, use at your own risk) for those (few) who probably are in the same situation with lower end hardware.

- Install Imperator and revert to old version 1.0 before you do anything. And make sure your user folder for Imperator is empty. (beware you backup your save files).

- Launch Imperator 1.0 normally. Change all settings to lowest possible (shadows, refraction, bloom disabled, multisampling and aa to 2 etc). Note that it took a minute for me to change the refraction setting. All other settings were directly changed.

- Exit the game. Make sure it's really stopped running via taskmanager.

- Delete all content in your user folder except the pdx settings file, the cache folder and the terrain cache folder. (be aware you delete your save games as well).

- Install 1.0.2 or 1.0.1. I also disabled cloud saves and Steam overlay.

- I now have 1.0.2 installed and in the user folder I only have the cache folder, the terrain cache folder and my pdx settings file.

- Launch the game via Steam, go to settings in Paradox launcher and select windowed mode and any low resolution.

- When the game reach InitGame at a certain point don't let the game idling. Open any app like your browser, Steam chat or whatever and as a miracle it passes the InitGame within a minute.

- Make sure Taskmanager isn't open at launch. It will result in not responding directly after launch.

- If you manage to get the game work in Windowed mode. Set the game to borderless fullscreen or fullscreen ingame settings. I use most common resolution 1920 x 1080 but the text is blurry. Also go to interface and set the UI scale to something between 0.8 and 1. Text will be still blurry. Change your resolution ingame once to any other resolution and back to 1920 x 1080 and the text is clear.

- Start a new game and I was able to play half an hour without issues. Even less stuttering as before.

- In the end I can now launch Imperator even in fullscreen as I keep the condition to use any app while it's loading InitGame.

Thanks, this evening I will try this method

Worked perfectly

Worked perfectly

I was not able to play after I posted my personal workaround, but just came back from work and indeed for me it's still working as well.
It took a while before it continues from InitGame, but if I browse a bit and chat a bit around in Steam while Imperator is loading it will continue within a few minutes.

From my experience after all of this I found two way to avoid this bug. The first is to use the window mode and than change specifics. The second is to make work the computer when imperator is loading. (special thanks to Cablenexus)
