One of the more annoying "features" is the retirement or death of a Captain where the "crew" selects a replacement.

Who turns out to be a total noob.

In any ship, short of a mutiny, the 2nd in command would become Captain. And he would be almost as competent. A crew that selects a novice deserves to be sunk.

I would sggest that the replacement be one skill less competent, randomly chosen.

That would be a bit too good I'm afraid. If you would give player great captain right after the old one retires you would deny the whole aspect of training and rotating captains on regular basis.

Personally I keep training new captains and ships by fighting Pirates and other companies so as soon as one dies or retires I have a replacement at hand. I also keep rotating 60 years olds with youngsters on regular basis so the number of retirments I'm experiencing is limited.

Replace him as soon as he reaches home port?
