Honestly CK is pretty unique. I mean, ok, we can often recommend similar games, there are so many games existing nowadays, but for CK, even within paradox games themselves, i don't see any, really. You don't find in EU, Victoria, HOI, the dynasty thingy, which is the main point of CK. Maybe a little bit in EU:Rome, but nothing to compare, and not at all in the same humouristic spirit.
Elsewhere, well, no, really, civilization ? total war or Anno series ? no dynasty whatsoever...
Wait for CK2 and hope they improve it and keep this humouristic and roleplaying spirit which was making CK so unique.
Ah yes, there's one game i would recommend : the sims. i'm not joking, in the sims you build a dynasty too and invent your own stories, okay there's not the historical contest, but then... just wait for CK2 :)

there are some old games by a company called koei, which deal with medieval dynasty building and are very similar in a way, though much simpler in scope. the one that comes to mind which has decent graphics for the time is Genghis Khan II - Clan of the Gray Wolf, but check out the others too.

Knights of Honor comes to mind, and obviously Medieval Total War series. But really, this are much battle-oriented, there's nothing like CK simulating the dynastic and the diplomacy during the middle ages.

Knights of Honor is the best after CK

I wonder if there is ever going to be a crossbreed between those two.

Ah, that would be very nice, but I think they should stay at least somewhat separate. Knights of Honor is very good for introducing people to Crusader Kings, as it's CK Lite if you avoid the RTS battles.

It's a great game, but too easy. Mods ratchet up the difficulty, though.

And I've heard of The Guild II before. At $3.75 I can't really say no, so here goes! :)

Well, I checked out Knights of Honor, it's pretty fun.

How did you like The Guild 2? And did you update it to the 2.2 patch? Don't go to 2.21 yet, there is a bad bug. :)

Any more games you guys suggest?

The Guild 2 ownz! But with the expansion Pirates of the seas and with the mod Sovereign Edition where you can find here

There's dynasty building in KoH? I played it for months and don't remember having sons and making them rule after me. Or maybe, I just don't remember...

Nope not really, you only see your wife and children. So not so complicated and cool like in CK :(

I'll have to try KoH then. I have played also The Guild 2 but without any add-ons or mods. It was fun for sometime but I got pretty quickly bored to that.

The thing with The Guild 2 is that it's 1000* better on Multiplayer!

I've only ever tried playing it by myself, but now that you mention it, I can imagine it being pretty amazing actually. The constant fight for power between the players sounds pretty good, too bad none of my friends have the game:(

maybe I should try The Guild 2 too..

The Guild 2 has been on sale in various places and if you like simulation games it's decent enough for an Indie game, but it's neither overly hard (once you get past the relatively short learning curve) nor bug free. Multiplayer might be fun if you could round up enough people but from what I read in the forums, it's a bit buggy there as well.

CK is fun and fairly unique in what it delivers. Unfortunately, like most Pdox games, it doesn't deliver the high twitch satisfaction that leads to high sales. CK2 would be interesting, but given that I've taken a 'wait and see' policy on purchases here, I can't bring myself in good concience to sign the petition.

Only game I would add to the list above that has some form of family dynasty would be RTW. Children had the chance of inheriting traits from the parent(s) which some mods make use of in small ways.

With Sovereign, Pirates multiplayer isn't buggy so long the host has a very good connection.
