Which of these is more prominent in determining stats and traits for characters?
Well, I guess I should ask if there's even a real system of genetic inheritance. I really don't know.
I'm just curious right now because I noticed on of my characters daughters was born club-footed. I checked quickly and saw that her maternal grandfather was also club-footed. Is this genetics, or just a random coincidence?

In the original game, a characters stats were 'genetic' so to speak, in that they were based off the stats of both parents at birth, allowing for selectively breeding super characters. This was seen as abusive, and so the Deus Vult expansion changed it completely, so now only health and fertility are based on the parents stats (and since these are invisible and variable during the game, much harder to breed for) while the rest come as random increases each year the child grows up, either +1 to one stat, +3 to one stat, or +1 to all stats each year, IIRC.

The random events that assign nearly all traits ARE influenced by the traits your parents have, but no further up the line than that, so in your case it was just a coincidence.

Hmmm..., when i read the Education Revisited Thread in the FAQ i understood, that theres no fixed influence from the parents but some till the age of 5 and the education process relates to the Court Members on the kind of education.

So what the...%§$?!...
..actually i printed all files and threads on education, read them carefully, but finally i got confused and just concentrated on the traits of the court members and how they influence specific education.

What i didnt get is, if you have for instance martial education, has the education result have anything to do with the other court members other than the Marshal (so i understood, just that there are different numbers for the traits related to kind of education) and if so, only the traits or also the sheer number ?

Say, theres a Steward who has 15 Points for Stewardship and a "generous" trait, will that influence the kids martial education or is a martial education only relating to the values and traits of the Marshal (after the age of 5) ?

Sorry for posting these questions, but i didnt understand the education files on the part of who influences the kid at what time.
As i mentioned, i read all major posts on education and have them as files on my PC, but they confuse me nonetheless..

Btw, my point was, no its not random..
Cheers

It's actually pretty simple how education works. You pick one of the three branches for a child in your court. After that point, nothing happens until they turn 16. Then, which specific level of the branch they're in is somewhat random based on the path they are on, with the chances for any particular one effected by the child's stats, especially those most important to the branch (so high stewardship will lean them towards the economic type), the child's various personality traits, the mother and fathers' education type and traits, the courtier assigned to that specific role's traits and education level, and various improvements in your province.

So, if both of a child's parents were Midas touched, you have a steward that is Midas Touched and has a high diplomacy skill (high diplo means more influential) and the child has a high stewardship skill, the Midas Touched event is more likely to fire than say, Naive Wirepuller. In the end it's still random though. Having the higher end buildings (university, war academy, school, etc) weights it towards the better levels.

Yes, this is for DV, latest patch. That list just shows how the various traits can influence the chance of getting any particular education type, i.e. increasing or decreasing the odds that you will get a particular education type after you turn 16. But it still works as I described. The odds of getting any particular trait during childhood is a whole other can of worms. It depends on the choices you make, random events that fire, and in the end much of the same thing education type depends on: mother/father's traits, stats, etc.

So parents do have influence over their children, but only directly pass health and fertility on to them. Everything else just influences their development?

Genetic traits and stats seems like a lot of fun though, but I do remember reading somewhere that it had a Darwinist-like effect where everyone who made it to the late game had superhuman stats. Still, it seems like it would be a fun mod.

Would it be possible to create a mod that reintroduces genetic traits and stats in Deus Vult, or would that require hacking the game's core files?

Thanks, i started reading the education thread again and what you mentioned
and i state how i understood it and assume, while in doubt having understood anything.

Please correct me where im wrong and dont mind talking to me like a child, as otherwise we may have language related misunderstandings, or well at least i will. :eek:o

Child is born:
Health and Fertility are fixed by parents

Child grows:
Gets skill based on Health, Buildings and by Parents Traits/MTTH

Child gets education:
-Achieved Skills are important for education decision, will influence MTTH and the achieving Job Trait (C. Merchant /Midas T)
-Aforementioned influences like parents, health and building still influence the trait/MTTH and skill development
-When in martial ecucation, the martial advisor will influence the martial Skill and Trait later on achieved
-When in court adducation, the 3 advisors (D,I,S) will influence further on the specific Skill and Trait (Dip on Dip, Spy on Int, Stew on Stew)
-Skill changes by education specific numbers, which can vary +1 or +3
-Skill and Trait change through Events happening (friendship, even prestige??)
-Gaining character traits (fi "selfish") influence MTTH, Skill and by this the probable Job trait
-Advisors as friends influence the trait/MTTH and skills as well
- if specific advisor is bad (<7) in Dip he doesnt have any influence
- if specific advisors skill is bad, its bad for for specific skill for the child

Childhood ends (not yet Education):
-skills by specific education stops influencing outcome
-Final job direction (in courtedu dip, int, ste) is decided
-Skills dont develop anymore
-Buildings, events and specific advisor still influences MTTH and final quality of job trait
(otherwise i dont know why it lasts so long before the final trait shows up)
-When "High School" ends the final job trait shows up and skills are changed by the specific trait value

BTW, my main misunderstandings were the character traits (like "selfish"), as i thought that it werent only the kids (character) traits but the parents and advisors (character) traits as well, so that confused me.....or is it the case and i didnt understand again ?

As mentioned i might be wrong here and there...and please correct where i'm wrong. thanks

but what i know is, i still have questions

As:
-Where do kids get the martial skills from, when they are in court education and vice versa (court skills when in martial education), only from education specific rising skills, parents or as well from the advisor ?
- In the education thread praxiteles mentioned an "intermediate trait", is that the symbol for the kind of education ?
- I'm definitely insecure about the skills achieved between birth and education starting
- do friends who are not advisors have influnce as well in skill and trait develpment ?

Thanks for reading and hopefully answering and correcting.
Cheers,

Nik

The one misunderstanding that you have, which will help to answer some of your final questions, is where the skill points for the martial, intrigue, diplomacy, and stewardship fields come from. Each year a child ages up to 16(say on his birthday) he either has +1 added to the base of a single skill, +3 added to the base of a single skill, or +1 added to the base of ALL skills. Which happens is as far as I know completely random, possibly having a school/university in your capital province weights it towards the better options (+3/+1 to all). I have no clue about whether parents/advisers have any effect on this. So a child with a court education still gets martial points. Just from casual observation it seems that the average skill for each field ends up being around 8 for children without a school, and 10/11 for children with one.

The various traits a character gets modify skills from a characters base. So, if a character had a base of 10/8/10/9/7/7 (martial, diplo., intrigue, stew., health, fert.) and had a court education, was temperate, and wise, then their final stats would be 12/11/10/10/7/5. Traits come entirely from random events, the odds of them firing are effected by parents, friends, advisers, etc.

Yes, the 'intermediate trait' is the specific education branch they are on: martial, court, or ecclesiastical. Friends do not seem to have any effect on which specific type of final education they get in the end (e.g. Grey Eminence), but they do have some effect on which traits they may get by helping certain random events fire, which in turn can influence final education type. Advisers and parents have a strong effect on which final education they get, based on their education type, stats, and traits.

Ah, i see. So there is always a skill bonus anyway.
I forgot that in my explanation, as i mixed this up with specific education skills.
Great, confusion ends here and some mystery resolves, while there is is still enough left.

The sudden interest in mechanics just came from the experience of getting totally bull characters/heirs, when they
returned from being fosterlings in a quite bad county. I forgot last time to marry my heir before i gave him a county
and keep his wife as an advisor, as by this i could still have control over the kids. Damnit, i will never forget that again.
Well it wasnt too bad as another kid got a good eclestical education, so i made him my heir, instead of the Flamboyant Schemer
with skill 9-8-7-8., another had become a Misguided Warrior as well with skills below 10.

Anyway, thanks a lot for giving me relief and help return my sanity.
