Is the AI cheating in combat?

I am playing as Venice and start at war with Hungary and I am getting crushed in nearly every battle. I come in with 2x the soldiers and a 6+1 roll against a 3 roll and get massacred. This is absolutely maddening. Why is this happening?

I am playing the demo and right now this game is a no-buy for me if its going to be like this.

The AI does not cheat in combat.

The numbers you are seeing in the battle screen are not the die rolls, like you might expect from having played EU3. They are the relative "power" of the two armies; this is why their sum (other than modifiers) is always 10.

if you attack them in mountains or across rivers , the defenders get a combat bonus

Venice doesn't have the best soldiers either, because of the slider settings.

They start out very defensive if I remember correctly.

And very naval too.

the trick to play a naval nation like Venice , is for your land army to move into enemy territory when its vacant , because you get a seige bonus because you a re defensive. always let the enemy attack you.
Your navy is for gain points if the others have a fleet as well.

i recently had a 10 year war against the TUR, they had over 100000 men and 200 ships, I had 42000 men and 70 ships , yet I won by playing defensive, occuping the gulf of venice and attacking their fleet.

The war that is already going on at the start of the 1419 scenario?
Don´t fight at all.
If you look at the provinces you will notice that Venice already controls Dalmatia.
If you make a peace offer to Hungary you will notice that you have a "warscore" of 27 (from occupying Dalmatia and prior won battles before 1419).
That´s enough to demand Dalmatia from them and even a few goldpieces if you are lucky - without a single fight.

Edit: Just remembered - that´s only true if you are playing FtG with the AGCEEP mod not the vanilal game.

Also, don't recruit any infantry before land tech 9 or so. Cavalry is way more powerful before gunpowder, even if you lose battles against huge infantry armies you'll still decimate them and eventually win.

Dalmatia and the Hungarian provinces easily reached by Venice are mostly mountains if I remember correctly. Not the best setting for cavalry (or use mule cavalry :p ).
