Hello all,

I have around 150 assets from about 10 years ago when I used to make custom assets for the game Trainz. I made them in Gmax and an older version of 3DS Studio Max. I would love to get them into Blender (or any other "modern" 3D modelling program and is free).

I have done a search of the net and a search of this site ad I cannot find anything useful that will let me convert .gmax or .max files for use in blender. I have tried to import them into Blender but I cannot.

Any advice anyone? Looks like I might just have to recreate them all and learn Blender while at it!

Unfortunately, .gmax and .max are proprietary formats created by autodesk that include EVERYTHING relating to a scene. That can include autodesk proprietary functions, such as their cloth simulations, physics engine data, etc. etc. There's really no way to convert them. You'll need a copy of max to open them and then export them to a modern format that blender can import, such as OpenCollada. Even the older Lightwave .obj format would work.

Thanks for the reply on this. This confirms what I read as well.

But you have given me an idea, I can grab the trial version of 3DS and ise that to export them to another format and then port them in to Blender.
