I don't know if it is as competitive as the DAIM AI, in fact, I think likely not since I only really started AI development for SP 3 months ago, so a lot just went into making it simply "reactive".

For example, I did some work trying to make Germany somewhat able in fighting a two front war against France and USSR at the same time. Obviously not the best situation, and one that the German AI usually loses against itself, but, I feel that with some work it could be trained to do these things better, and by eliminating a certain amount of "prediction" we also make the game harder.

Really don't want to go the DAIM route and have UK have 130 division by 1939. I want more historical division levels, and this creates other problems too, since if you have less divisions it is much harder to get the AI to properly place them where they are needed.

Strategic Conisderations:

I am doing ok. Ok is not good enough. Germany has to end Soviet resistance within two years. At this point it looks next to impossible.

But something must be done. And it requires a bold move. I don't really want to DOW Turkey because that is the kind of thing that drives up US interventionism. Romania is not coming over. I decide I must extend the front. Ally Bulgaria. Annex Romania, get the Regia Marina out of the med by attacking Turkey and taking Instanbul, and then hope I can make a successful landing in the Crimea and finally make some progress.

Session V Game Notes:

Air Power and Naval War in the East is Red

Session V, though not really an excellent moment in the game for my side, is an excellent session to talk about some of the changes to air power mechanics and how they work in conjunction with naval war.

It's quite obvious that MG has undertaken the destruction of my intrepid Italian allied navy quite seriously, since quite obviously it is one of the things that stands between him and aiding the Soviet Union -- though at this point it doesn't seem like they need much help. :D

regiavrafsmall.jpg

Click Through to Larger Image

While the Luftwaffe and Regia Aeronautica Italiana are still in service, MG can't simply throw up his invincible wall of long range "fighters", achieve air superiority, and then pound the Regia Marina in any and all ports in the Mediterranean. He can not for example, easily destroy any ships in Venice simply by flying regular missions out of Malta... which he doesn't hold at this point in this game, but I digress. No, first he has to secure forward bases, so that his "air superiority" force can secure the skies for his bomber force.

This means eliminating the Italian defenses on the Mediterranean Island, and occupying them.

This system is combined with an entirely new model for the Naval bomber type (which also operates at much shorter ranges that only evolves into a true anti-shipping force at the end of the war) returns the navies of the combatants into important elements in their arsenal of "power projection" tools, since deep sea operations require a navy, not merely an covering air force.

Also, as one can see in my planned Operation Balaclava, I intend to keep the Regia Marina alive for even longer by moving it even further out of reach from the long arm of the Royal Navy by moving it to the Black Sea in the upcoming session.

In the Pacific theater the effect of these changes is even more pronounced, where "Island Hopping" by both Japan and the USA is a necessary function of securing air superiority.

Other a-historical results have also been eliminated by the amalgamation of all "dogfight" aircraft to a single units type. As one can see below, it is no longer possible for the United Kingdom, operating from bases in southern England, to even try to gain air superiority over the German heartland in 1940, as was possible before.

All in all it was a good year for Germany. At least we managed to regain the strategic momentum. We probably did about 60 to 80 Russian divisions overall, to which I lost about 12, plus an HQ. But then every one of my divisions counts for about 2 Russian ones. Geo has stacks and stacks of them.

I don't think you'll make it, it is already August. The Balkans are distracting you. Fair play by the british player there. Soviets just need to stall, retreat and build build build and get every man and every gun on the map ASAP. 1942 is not for soviet advances yet.

It's true manpower is at a premium, and the Russian have much and the Americans are waiting in the wings. All we can do is try, and trust to luck. :) That one, and the next sessions were pretty wild touch and go affairs.

I was lucky I made the penetration in the south. I needed to keep the momentum and get some traction.

The Allied Front December 1942

With the Africa continent locked down by British and Commonwealth forces, Operation Spartan War Donkey is put into motion.

Thousands of troops pour into Turkey with the total combined Allied Arsenal (incl Turkish Forces) peaking at 62 Divisions. Canadian Forces Secure the Eastern Bosporus shore lines lest the Germans try to cross over. All veterans, certified in the sands of Libya.

The Island road through the Dardanelles is opened to the allies with the Royal Navy putting on a show of Power. Recent engagements along the Spanish North coasts have put Kriegsmarine forces in danger of extinction and thus securing dozens of freed up fleet commanders to help bring the war to an end in the Med Seas. With a rebuffed Navy in the Med and American Air Support British Admirals set a trap to cripple the Italian fleet once and for all. The plan is a success dealing ireperable damage to the RM and securing Juristiction of the adjacent Greek seas.

Allied forces push aside the puny defences in Greece and settle on a strategic line South of Sofia shortly after holding the advance in concern of an axis counter offensive out of the Macedonian region. After having crippled but not defeated the Italian Fleet High command suggest it far wiser that wait out the possible counter attack..

Meanwhile,

US forces continue to grow stronger by the day. Motorised, Mechanized Armour and lets not forget the Marines, The fighting men who are going to take the beaches. Marines pour into the pacific by the Thousands Intelligence suggest that including recruits some 500,000 Marines are gearing up for combat on a global scale. With Fears of Japan entering the War and the growing concerns of the conflict between Axis Germany and Soviet Russia, the US Joint Chiefs agree on a Defence Plan to negate the effects of a Japanese intervention or possible negative blowback from the Conflict in Eastern Europe.

Lend Lease flows by ships, ships and More Ships! thousands of Tonnes of LL arrives in UK and USSR. Tanks and Equipment for 7 armourd divisions arrive in the Soviet Union, and 5 old aircraft carriers are transferred from the USN to the RN, go get em boys!

However growing pressure from the British Admiralty for USA to involve itself further into the war in Europe is being felt in the Whitehouse. The President is expected to make a decision on a "Boots on the Ground Policy" against the Third Reicht, and hes expected to make this decision before the Christmas.

Back in Greece....

Revitalised, restaffed battle ready Commonwealth divisions sit restlessly in there trench North of Athens. With the near complete destruction of the RM at hand Allied commanders agree that any loss to the RN is now acceptable in order to Secure the Med Seas and re-establish trade routes through them.

One by one the Dominoes fall, Crete, Rhodes, Sardinia none defended more bravely then Sardinia. Only one road block stands in the way of the road to Sicily now, Malta. With the succesfull deployment of Red Beret Commando elemnts to Cairo and there subsequent battle hardening in Greece, it is rumoured that the Battle for Malta is going to be going down real soon. Allied Leaflet drops drop over malta urging the Nazi garrison to surrender to the sheer weight of Allied strength and common sense.

BATTLE FOR GREECE Pt.2

Having seen Tirana open for many days and all 50+ Allied divisions being ready to go a decisive plan was established to land at Tirana enmass and encircle the German Reserves blocking the Advance out of Greece, what was to unfold was nothing short of a near disaster.

Wehrmacht everywhere! No sooner had our break out begun then it was put to a hasty end. German forces blitz south through the thin reserve force we left in place and hardened Panzer Divisions from the Soviet front had arrived in such numbers to completely crush the advance of Allied Forces and force our immediate withrdawal back to defend Athen... High command had not anticipated so many Panthers.

British commanders withdraw from Tirana back towards Athens a series of Marathon battles North of Athens ensue for supremacy in the Region. Germany has the Tanks but we have the Seas and the Skies. At Sessions end several week long battles are raging that are touch and go for the Fate of Athens, presently however Allied Forces look to win these battles lest they be pushed back across the Dardanelles. Greek civilians rally to the cause of Allied troops knowing what fate awaits them should the Nazi opressors be victorious in greece for a second time. UK Commanders are confident with Mountbatten leading the way with his Red Berets. "Here I am in my first command - a bit dazed but feeling very grand."

UK high Command Begs the US President to open a second Front, will Winston get his christmas present from Uncle Sam?

Late Summer and Fall Campaigns in Russia

Strategic Considerations:

It is obvious that something has to be done about the slowly growing Allied presence in Greece, but we really can not afford to let any opportunity to destroy Russian divisions while we can. Therefore the main thrust of session 7 is still operations in Russia. I have sent a small force of 10 extra divisions to help smother the Allied advance to prevent them from breaking out, but nothing of the key offensive assets of the Wehrmacht are deployed in the Balkans.

Game Play Comments:

Breaking through at Chernigov-Gomel and Vyshgorod was very profitable, and I think I netted another 50 divisions in an massive overrun. I was lucky here because Geo attacked with his massed armour just east of Chernigov, just before I was about the launch my attack. He quickly realized the issue when the strength of my attack became evident, and canceled his attack, but the armoured force he would need to reinforce his position at Chernigov was depleted by their own attack, and by the time he brought them into play, it was too late. At the same time, units to the west of Chernigov were engaged by a general attack from Axis allies, and helped to pin possible reinforcements there, allowing for the blitz breakthrough into Gomel.

We tried to get the Abwehr to decode the meaning of that, but our boys failed, unfortunately. It was suggested it might be lyrics from a popular song, but we aren't fooled by such tricks. We had that analyst sent off...

Game Play Comments:

After Gomel I try for Kaluga in an effort to turn the entire Russian flank. This turns out to be a mistake, rightly I should have turned around immediately, and pressed my attack west in an effort to trap the advanced Russian units in Beloryussia. I attempt this second plan, but my armoured units are so depleted by the attacks at Gomel and then Kaluga that they simply don't have the juice to fight the fresh Soviet divisions in Beloryussia, though I do force them to withdraw. I might have picked up a division or two, but by the time we got around to this plan, Geo was already retreating out of the danger zone.

Geo is not one to turn down an opportunity, and in true Geo style counters my advance in Beloryussia with an attack in the Urkaine. I almost pocket the best part of the Russian Armour just outside of Kiev when I try to pincer the flanks of his attack, but they escape in another near miss for the Wehrmacht.

Its been fast and its been pell-mell with attacks and counter attacks on both sides, but by the end of the campaign season, I am faced with the task of dealing with the Allies in Greece, so I carefully withdraw and start redeploying.

Campaign Assessment:

This year, I have to be satisfied with the 70+ divisions I picked up after the attack in Ukraine and Crimea, and then later at Gomel. Its been a good year, and the Russians have been cut down a bit, but they are hardly anywhere near dead.

Driving the Invaders from Europe

Strategic Considerations:

With the USA in the war, the time to act is now. I must force MG to make a landing as opposed to simply adding troops to an already established beach head. In order to drive this army from Greece, I originally am taken with the idea of invading Turkey using the Regia Marina to make a landing, and at the same time using a paradrop. Then I would land troops in behind the defenders at the Bosprus, and work to cutting off any retreat for the force in Greece.

Here again, my main objective is to take as many divisions as possible.

Game Play Notes

Events simply move to fast for me to contemplate a clever invasion of Turkey and the Regia Marina is quickly put to work with other objective.

My opportunity to kick the British out of Greece starts out with a clear error on my part. I'd like to say I meant to do this, but basically I just left Tirrana open, which was a very stupid thing to do. Not only is it a beach, but it is a port, and in mountains as well. Once in there the Allies would be very hard to dislodge, and could easily turn my flank.

MG sees this opportunity and acts on it immediately. Its a good plan and comes very close to working. What he doesn't expect is that I now have a huge force heading to the Balkans. In fact, had I done anything less than redeploy nearly all of the Wehrmacht armour to the Balkans and the Crimea, he very likely would have succeeded.

Fortunately, my forces are almost there at the time when MG is moving, and so I hastily throw them into the fray without delay or even waiting for them to "Org Up". The Regia plays what looks like will be its last critical roll in the war ferrying Armour divisions through the North Aegean and into Greece. Its a risky operation, and in order to cover it, I have to bait the RN with what remains of my surface fleet.

Game Play Notes:

MG quickly got out of Tirrana as soon as the weight of my attack became evident, a wise move, even though I am sure he could have held on there for quite some time. Instead he decided to concentrate his forces at the choke point of the Greek peninsula at Athens. This all turns out to be one hell of a slug fest with back and forth battles all over, finally resolving into two titanic battles in Agrinno, and in Athens.

Campaign Assessment:

At the end of the session it looks like we will knock the British out of Greece, but at considerable loss of valuable MP, and half the remaining assets of the Regia Marina, which was already cut in half. The Regia as useful as it has been is now down to 25% of its original force strength. MG fought all the way here, and things are not going to get any easier, both with the Allies and with Russia.

The whole thing on the east front has been pretty wild. It's a pity you don't get to see it. Wild swings, fluidity and attacks and counter attacks there in the fall. If you Geo hasn't been chatting a whole lot it's because he and I have been very busy.

Anyway, there you get some of the flavour of it.
