Is there a reason for the dukes of Saxony to be instead a grand duchy/kingdom at around 1107? Guessing from the history I've looked, is it to keep Saxony and bavaria together or something since the Askanian dukes held both, or is it a glitch in the history or something? I know this is nitpicking, but I'm very curious.

Long story short, duchies in CK2 can't (or couldn't at the time) change de jure land over time. So in order to properly model the HRE's lack of kingdoms and Saxony in particular the Grand Duchies system was built. The history is admittedly not perfect but it's as close as we could do.
