Hi. I downloaded the vanilla HoI2 demo and both the main menu and game screens are corrupt. The main menu has all of its images squashed down to half their size but returns to normal when I exit an actual map. The map itself though looks like this and won't change:

I don't really want to go for the full game if it's going to give me unfixable problems. I'd love to play though, the game looks great. :(

Edit: It turns out the game was asking for permission in the background to use ffdshow, I gave it full access and now everything works. Joy.

I was going to post a topic about this, I have the exact same problem.

I've had it in all Paradox games, what happens is usually just after I start my computer and load windows I can start a game. If I quit a Paradox game and a while later start it up again often I get this corruption, don't know if it's the amount of time or if the computer goes into standby or something.

Anyway normally I can restart my computer and the bug goes away.

Except today I changed some windows startup options (msconfig), all irrelevant applications like Google Desktop, IPod etc which load up when windows start and eat up resources so I said not to start them. Well after rebooting now I get this problem all the time.

I tried rebooting 3 times and it's always the same, now whenever I start I get an "ffdshow" window opening asking me if I want to use ffdshow (I think it's some kind of graphics/video codec/renderer) "not this time", "never", "just this once" or "always". Whatever I choose I get the same result (tried just this once and not this time).

But I've had this window pop up before (seemingly at random, sometimes it doesn't appear) and it didn't seem to make any difference, whatever option I chose HoI worked fine so I thought it was irrelevant.

Anybody know something about this?

My graphics card is a Saphire/Radeon 1950 PRO a quite common top of the line card, I would be amazed if that's the problem since I've never seen anybody mention this bug.

Welcome to the forum. Sorry for the late answer.

Is there an avi folder in the demo. if so, rename it to avi.old.

Try and set colordepth to 16bit.

If that doesn't fix your problem, please run Dxdiag( Start->run -> type dxdiag -> run all tests and save the result) and post the result in this thread.

The above usually happens when...

1. Some program other than HOI2 steals the focus of windows during the loading process. To avoid this turn off all music matching programs, messenger programs etc before running HOI2.

2. You minimize the screen during the load.... same as 1 above.

3. Your graphic card is dying....... run any diagnostic programs you can find on the internet to check out your card.

4. If none of the above applies consider inserting your XP OS disc and running Repair.... you may have damaged/corrupt OS files.

Thanks!

That seems to have solved it.

I just changed the avi folder's name and tried to start HoI2 and it worked, no need for the other things.

Yes that FFDshow thing popped up.

How can I minimize the screen? I don't see any way to do that in my HoI game, I can alt tab or quit the game through the menu and that's it.

Can you recommend any diagnostic programs? I haven't had this card long but I have noticed for a long time that my computer gets very hot, the CPU is around 55 degrees centigrate on average and the fans whir a lot, but I haven't done anything about it yet.

By the way, my problem was not exactly the same as Capa's.

I do not get and never got any black filled provinces which he/she seems to. I just get those strange shapes spaced out evenly all over the game map and more importantly all the 'tool-tip' hover text (when you leave the cursor over any stat, slider, resource value, unit) has those black lines going through it which makes it impossible to read most of the important information in the game (you can't read any of the 'tool-tip' information).
