OOC: Okay, I'm not dropping my British AAR, I'm just putting it on hold for two-three days while I debate whether or not to use 1.06 or 1.05c for it... In the meantime, I am going to basically replay this game in which I restored Austria to it's size as the former Austro-Hungarian Empire. It'll be a short AAR, don't expect too much...

IC:

In the summer of 1914 the Archduke of Austria-Hungary, Francis Ferdinand and his wife Sofie were brutally shot dead in Sarajevo Bosnia. It would be a simple death, a political statement by the Balkan Slavs that would spark a world war and kill 20 million. By 1918 the war wore on and the mighty Habsburg Empire was in stalemate. The fronts in Italy and Greece had remained stationary since 1915 and the Empire was strained thin. The only progress in the war was by the Entente of against the mostly anarchic Russia which had been in perpetual Chaos since February 1917. Austria-Hungary would collapse, Austria and Hungary would separate, Czechoslovakia, Poland and Yugoslavia would be born from the end of the war and along with Romania and Italy the lands beyond Austria and Hungary were diced up between these nations by the victorious Entente. Austria and Hungary would stumble through the postwar years trying to find stability and purpose.

Upon exiled Emperor Karl I von Habsburg's death in 1922 the new head of the Habsburg house, Maximilian Eugene - brother of Karl I and head of the Habsburg House until Karl's 10 year old son Otto was of age - snuck into Austria under a veil of secrecy. The Monarchy had attempted to ascend to the throne of Hungary but the attempt failed upon Karl's death. There was a planned coup by the scheming Maximilian and the Old Guard - a conservative group in favor of Habsburg re-ascention of the throne - in 1924. The coup failed, and a break was made in the fragile infant Austrian Parliament between Liberals and Conservatives. Italy was asked to intervene by the breaking up Austrian Government, but Italy was in it's own crisis involving Mussolini. Austria's Government collapsed and General von Eimannsberge took over and declared Martial Law. The Entente Powers called off a force they were sending to the struggling Austria to calm the situation, however, that action was too soon. Turns out, General von Eimannsberge was a supporter of the Coup. Reorganizing the Government, General von Eimannsberge declared Maximilian Eugene Regent, and the now 12 year old Otto was proclaimed Emperor.

Habsburg rule returned to Austria relatively bloodless however, and only 6 months after the Military Junta took control the Parliament was reestablished on Otto's command. General von Eimannsberge and Maximilian attempted to stop Otto from ruining the Absolutist Power they had worked to hand to him, but failed when Otto aligned himself with the Liberal parties, and thus united Austria. Both Liberals and Conservatives henceforth supported Emperor Otto.

Austria then went down a path of rebuilding and restoration. The country quickly outpaced the rest of war-torn Central Europe, and Austria repaid it's Reparation Debts and became the leading Central European Market by 1928. General von Eimannsberge and General Zehner rebuilt the army to the maximum 90,000 troops dictated by the limitations of the Versailles Treaty. The 1929 Market Crash in the United States hurt Europe, and Austria was no exception. However Austria endured and by 1934 the economy was returned to stability.

In 1930 Otto turned 18 and finally was crowned Imperial Majesty of the Habsburg Kingdom of Austria. Maximilian was deposed as Regent, but became a leading politician in the Parliament. Doctor Dolfuss was elected Chancellor in 1930 and his leadership would recover the Austrian Economy and be praised by the European Nations as sensible and stable. Mussolini visited Vienna in 1933 and signed a protection pact with Austria and Hungary in hopes of creating a "Central Triangle" in Central and Southern Europe. However, events in Germany would compromise such ideals...

While Austria enjoyed success, Germany sat in despair. It was blamed for the Great War and humiliated by the Versailles Treaty. The Occupation of the Ruhr by France in 1924 caused the weak German Currency to entirely collapse signaling the end of any resemblance of a German Economy. In 1933 this ended. Hindenburg had been recovering Germany slowly, or trying to. But Adolf Hitler the head of the Nationalist Socialist party in Germany won himself the Chancellery by shrewd methods. Quickly Hitler reformed Germany, and pressure was soon being placed upon Austria, Czechoslovakia and Poland. Italy at first blocked all sort of large pressure from the North for Italy mistrusted this new Germany. A pact was purposed between Austria, Hungary, Czechoslovakia, Yugoslavia and Italy. Mussolini and the other leaders of the "Central Triangle" met in Milan in May 1934 to formerly hammer out the pact. An Austrian-German assassin calling himself the martyr of National Socialism jumped out during the parade, killed King Alexander of Yugoslavia, and wounded Mussolini and Emperor Otto. This was followed by an attempted coup by the Austrian National Socialist party in Vienna which killed Chancellor Dolfuss. Hitler was going to intervene and proclaim Austria his but he backed off when the coup was utterly defeated by the Austrian Military. The Central Block never came to be. The Yugoslavians blamed the Austrians and the Block fell apart before it ever existed.

Immediately the Conservatives were elected to power in Austria in hopes that they could keep this from happening again. However, the Conservatives had their own agenda. Remember that the Conservatives wanted to restore the Habsburg Empire, the ENTIRE Habsburg Empire. The Versailles Treaty was broken and 45,000 new troops conscripted, pressure was placed upon Czechoslovakia and the Austrians started to undermine the Hungarian Government to bring the Hungarians into a new union with Austria. Emperor Otto was unable to agree to any of this as he was still in Milan slipping in and out of Coma's for several months. Hitler looked at Austria's sudden change of policy as shocking, Italy and the Allies saw it as reckless but a way to bring strength to Central Europe to counter ever growing Germany and of course the Bolsheviks.

January 1st 1935 saw the official creation of the plan for the "Habsburg Union" or "H-Union" it mapped out all the "True Habsburg" territory. This included pieces of Italy, Yugoslavia, Hungary, Czechoslovakia, Poland and Romania. However, unlike the former Empire, H-Union would be several united states working separately but as one country. However it took until November 1935 when Emperor Otto returned to his throne after a very long recovery process for the official plans for the H-Union to start to go into effect.

Map of current Austria, the true Habsburg Territory, and the separate states that would be within the H-Union:
H-Union.png

1 - Austria, Capital at Vienna
2 - Czech-Morovia, Capital at Prague (Praha)
3 - Slovak-Galicia, Capital at Bratislava
4 - Hungary, Capital at Budapest
5 - Slovenia, Capital at Ljubljana
6 - Croatia, Capital at Zagreb
7 - Bosnia, Capital at Sarajevo
8 - Transylvania, Capital at Arad

Notes:
A) Why are there no claims on the northern half of the Sudentland? - A self ruling state is preferred there to work as a buffer state to reduce our borders with Germany and it is believed if we owned it the Germans of the area would be upset about it and possibly manipulate a conflict between us and Germany.

B) Why a claim on Italian Lands? Italy supports us! - Those lands were Austrian from 1600 onwards until the end of the war, Italy has no right to them.

C) Why create Slav states within our planned union? - We are restoring the Habsburg lands, ALL the Habsburg lands.

D) Romania and Serbia should - after they return our rightful land to us - be pursued as friends and influenced or possibly forced to our political ideals. These nations will be essential to our national defense and they must be in 'our camp'. Also, after our current claims are met there will be no further expansion into the Balkans.

E) It should be questioned whether or not Poland will hold together if they yield to our demands. The Bolsheviks and Nazi's may slice up the country if the Poles give in to us and that would undermine not only ours but most of Europe's security.

OOC: Notice how I killed Dolfuss and King Alex of Yugoslavia as they were killed anyway, yet under different circumstances? :) Also, I meant to put Claims on the povince of Venice as well, I'll edit that, didn't really notice it until just now...

GASP!

You are mad. MAD!

Great start, so tell me when or if the Hasburg Union succeds in gaining all of its former territory will their be any more expansions?

OOC: Yes, I am mad... I'm starting to wonder as I write this if my Habsburg restoration politics are actually worse then that of the Nazi's... And HUngary's claim on Transylvania has been taken into account, and promptly not cared about in the face of more important things... I think my most outragous claim is on Krakow, Poland

IC:

Chapter I: Osterriech-Ungarn once again!

On January 1st 1936 the Vienna Accord was published. Publicly it looked like a secure economic bill for Central Europe that seemed rather unnecessary. Secretly however, it was actually the detailed plan to create the H-Union. It was mapped out simply and in a few words:

Step 1) Hungary. Undermine Government by bringing the Conservative parties to our side (Complete) start pressuring Hungary January - February 1936 and have the Conservatives push for Union in the Hungarian Parliament. How Italy (With the Central Triangle their idea) will react is unknown to this.

Step 2) Transylvania. Czechoslovakia wont give up so easily, so Transylvania will be the next target. Unlike Hungary we will not be forcing the entire country of Romania into union, just Transylvania. Romania will be pressured March - May. Our first demand for Transylvania will be on April 9th. Further Demands will be placed throughout April and into May. On May 4th if Romania still refuses, 9 Divisions of the army are going to march to Arad and demand Transylvania with force.

Step 3) Czechoslovakia. We're demanding nearly the whole of their country, they probably wont give up until it's hopeless. Therefor we should wait until our military is of equal size and we have successfully infiltrated and pressured their government. Paris, London and Berlin probably wont be at all happy about this, but they have no right, these lands are Habsburg, all they always should be!

Step 4) Yugoslavia. Again, they probably wont give in until it's hopeless. Therefor we should pressure their government from the start, then start making demands in Spring-Fall 1936. Once the Czechs give in, Military pressure can be considered.

Step 5) Poland and Italy. Both are super powers and both are important nations within the League. Our demands upon them may be met with hostile ultimatums from both Britain and the Soviet Union. Not to mention both nations - unlike the nations of our other claims - are cabable of large military resistance... Pressure should not be applied until we are absolutely sure we can beat them both in a war at the same time. Probably 39 or 40.

---

The first target of the Union was obvious to the world - Hungary. The Hungarian Government had been spiraling out of control and doing balancing acts since 1918. Uniting with Hungary first would expose Czechoslovakia's entire southern border to the union and would leave it quite vulnerable. Also, the claims in Transylvania and Poland would then have borders with the union at least. But despite the strategic purposes of uniting with Hungary first the true purpose was pride. Austria and Hungary had to be united once more, it was entirely symbolic of the recreation of the Habsburgs power.

The Hungarian Government was already undermined. The Conservative groups had been won over and it was not going to be long before the Hungarians agreed to union. The Hungarian leader was completely unaware of Austria's scheming tactics until it was entirely too late. He realized it only in January of 1936 that the Conservatives pushed for Union measures to "Help our Economy".

When the Austrian Military announced doubling it's size on January 3rd the Hungarian ministers panicked. The first demand on Hungary was at Noon on January 27th 1936. The Hungarians met this with a prompt "Never!" thinking that currently the military's were still on an equal footing. Italy responded to this out of the blue demand with little comment. They didn't see it as worrying, but they had their hands full with trying to juggle the League of Nation's constant complaints about their imperialistic war in Abyssinia.

Meanwhile in February the Conservatives in Budapest plotted. On February 17th the next demand would be made, and the Conservatives by a narrow majority voted for union with Austria. The Cabinet was horrified, and dissolved the Parliament quickly, calling it traitorous to the sovereignty of Hungary. However, the Conservatives had in the mean time had taken control of the Military... The Hungarian Cabinet had no choice, they agreed to Union at 6 AM on February the 19th 1936...

Even Vienna was shocked at how easy that was. The Austrian budget was stretched thin and ready to burst at any moment. In fact, they were afraid if the Demands weren't met and war came that their economy would collapse. But such was not the case, Austria was a union, the Habsburgs were a name in Europe once more!

H-Union2.png

This Union was met with annoyance in France. The French Foreign Minister's report simply stated "Absolutely worthless Union. Both Hungary and Austria are and were on our side before. This had no effect on us whatsoever or our position in Europe or the Little Entente." In Britain, Churchill - an advocate of a grand federation in central Europe - cheered the Habsburg Union. Italy however, suddenly was increasingly pressuring Austria. More Italian Military units were moved to the Austrian border... Secretly, Mussolini had concluded talks with Hitler. Italy's mistrust of Germany was a thing of the past. With Britain and France demanding Italy stop it's war in Ethiopia Italy had to find a new friend, and that friend was Nazi Germany... Now Austria faced literally being crushed by Italy and Germany if war came with the Axis. Austria was too isolated, more pressure had to be placed on Yugoslavia so Austria could gain a port with which to keep in contact with the West... These events were very troubling... Luckily, one of Otto's own brother's, Robert, had married the sister of the Italian King. Despite the fact that the King was no powerless perhaps that royal marriage might secure things...

Emperor Otto and Field Marshal Zehner marched into Budapest triumphantly on February 21st. The Hungarian nation was dissolved and replaced with "The Habsburg Kingdom of Hungary". A new Parliament, Government and Constitution - practically identical their Austrian counterparts - were organized. Maximilian Eugene was proclaimed "Habsburg Prince and Regent of Hungary" Emperor Otto now claimed the title "Imperial Majesty, King of Austria, Hungary and Emperor of the Habsburg Empire".

Great, its a bi of a long shot with the royal marriage but its worth a go. ;)

Flag:

You know, I just hate this Austrian Flag... I was wondering, if I changed the flag now to something else and tried to reload my game, would the game files be corrupted because I changed the flag, or would it work?

As long as you fix the flag properly and are very careful about your format/resolution/color scheme/etc, it should be OK.

I make tech tree pics for the Great War Mod. Its quite easy. :D

As for the AAR...Hungary bites the dust. :(

Chapter II: Balkan Cave In

On February 29th 1936 pressure started to be applied to Yugoslavia. The Yugoslavian Military started jockeying itself along the border. Maximilian voiced worry to Otto in a letter:

Your Majesty,

As your uncle and advisor I must protest to the pressure being placed upon Yugoslavia. Our military is most certainly not ready to fight such an enemy and the Serbs could run over our country in a matter of days. Hungary at this time is entirely unguarded. I really most suggest that no further pressure be placed upon Yugoslavia until at least the fall of this year.

However, Maximilian's fears were misplaced. The Yugoslavian Cabinet requested a meeting with Otto, and that meeting took place on March 1st. The Serbs knew of our territorial claims and our plans to eventually get them. Also, the Croats, Bosnians and Slovenians were starting to organize armed resistance to the Yugoslavian Government, a fact the Serbs conveniently forgot to mention to Otto. So, the Serbs had a proposal: Joint administration of the areas claimed by the Austrians, and Military access. Otto agreed.

The British were appalled and thought the Serbs caved in too easily - the meeting had been secret. The Italians were very, VERY worried about the events and started to support the Austrians once more. The main factor in this was the fact that Austria had a port, they were not issolated anymore and could recieve a lot of aid from the Allies...

The Habsburg Kingdoms of Croatia, Bosnia-Herzogovnia and Slovenia were created. Otto visited Zagreb on March 3rd and proclaimed himself King of all of them. He appointed his brother Felix Regent and Prince of Croatia, his other brother Karl Ludwig Regent and Prince of Bosnia-Herzogovnia, and his Sister Adelheid Regent and Princess of Slovenia. He was running out of ciblings to appoint at an alarming rate...

H-Union3.png

OOC: Anyone else think the Serbs caved in WAY too quickly!? God I hope the Czechs give at least some denials to my claims... The Serbs jumped at the first one...

Chapter III: Rhineland - Germany the Aggressor

On March 8th the German Army marched into Frankfurt and the other grand cities of the Rhineland which had been a demilitarized zone occupied by the French since 1918. The French did not resist. They protested, and demanded their allies in Britain support actions to stop this German Aggression. The British refused "It is German land" they said. "They have learned their lesson" they said. "They will go no further then the Rhine, Hitler promised us this. France is safe, you need not worry" The British Prime Minister gallantly flaunted his 'Victory for Peace' and 'Forgetting of old feuds', Paris just sneered.

While this sent only a minor shiver through Austria - which was now the size of Italy, and had only a 90,000 man army as the new troops were still being trained - March 8 was not a terrifying day for the country. In fact, it was an overall good day. Yugoslavia - refusing to change it's name back to Serbia - and Czechoslovakia allowed the Habsburg Union Nations military access through their nations. Meanwhile a summit between Maximilian and the Romanian Foreign Minister showed a great cooperation between us and the Romanians. Churchill praised it saying the H Union "Brought stability and everlasting peace" to Central and Southeastern Europe. However, Stability and Peace was not what the H Union had in mind, at least, not until all the lands they claimed were returned to the Habsburg crown.

While the Germans marched on Frankfurt, the plans against Romania were being set up, but they required the military expansion to be completed which wasn't for nearly another month. So, Austria sank into a period of calm nothingness at home...

Maximilian's Notes March-April 1936:

Austria has become a world power once again and is quite prevailing on the world scene. Her investors have started reinvesting in places that hadn't been touched by Austria since 1914, like China. And speaking of China, the Communists and the Nationalists - fighting since about 1928 - struck some sort of deal after the Sian Incident on March 11th. How Communists and Democrats can get along in the heat of a civil war is completely and entirely exhausting to think about... Austria's own Socialist Party is fading into obscurity after the Nationalist Socialists organized protests and handed out propoganda flyers against them... The Nationalist Socialists seem to be gaining quite a lot of momentum in the Chancellery, perhaps worth worrying about? Hmmm, the Socialists in Croatia, Slovenia and Bosnia-Herzogovnia are prevailing above their other parties. Meanwhile it's a mix of National Socialism and Republicanism here in Hungary... I wonder if the Union will be politically split? Must speak to Adelheid about how she's handling Slovenia's problems because Slovenia was having a Nationalist Socialist split happening up until she took control.... Mexico seems to be having it's own Political difficulties - as usual - with the March Elections they elected a Semi-Socialistic party, which is shocking since during the great war Mexico had an all out Communist revolution that took years to crush... Naval research must be considered, we now hold some of the most important ports on the Adriatic, but will building a Navy hurt our relationship with Italy? Hmmm... There's been a surge of activity in the fields of research, but it's stretched the Union's budget to it's limit causing commodity's prices to soar, I see major budget problems in the future... The fields of Tank and Air Craft remain untouched... In late April the Netherlands also elected a liberal party (seems to be a trend these days) perhaps nations are doing this to counter the extreme conservative parties of Italy, Germany and Austria?

On April 10th Italy Annexed Ethiopia... It was a long and drawn out war that had disrupted the balance of power severely. Italy now found itself still at odds with Britain and being driven closer to Germany.

As soon as May 1st came pressure would be applied to Romania, and Transylvania by the end of the month - hopefully - would be returned to the Habsburgs!

On May 4th the Arad Ultimatum was handed to the Romanian Government. It demanded Transylvania or the Austrian Army would cross the border within 24 hours. The Romanian's believed they had been their friends, their allies, their power card in case they got in trouble with the Soviets. The Romanian's - knowing the Soviet Union would run over the country if Austria invaded - reluctantly agreed. Transylvania was established on May 6th, and Otto visited Arad on May 10th, proclaiming himself King and appointing his Sister Elisabeth Charlotte - barely 14 - Regent and Princess of Transylvania. As part of the deal, if Romania were attacked by the Soviet Union, the Habsburg Union would intervene.

Moscow, Paris and London looked rather worried towards Central Europe, but Berlin was truly concerned. Hitler wondered if his plans for Europe would be destroyed by this ever growing menace, or could he somehow bring Austria to his side. Hitler made contacts with the Nationalist Socialist parties within Austria, little by little he started to twist the fate of the Habsburg Union. Emperor Otto was entirely unaware...

Hey, every one knows the Austrians have the most feared army in the world.

They are whispered of in the halls of major governments...

A special scenario for this would be nice, can generals be added after you get certain provinces?
this would indeed make a great mod, events and all...to bad all the modders are busy with "da big projects" :D

Wait, how did you put claims on those areas? Did you rewrite files or is there some sort of secret keyboard code which I don't know yet?!?!

@Black Locust and Panther_V: You can also use the editor, and it's a bit faster then editing junk. If you go to the Editor, load the Road to War Scenario, then go to Countries, go to Austria, go to territory, click National, then click Ctrl+click on any territory you want a claim on. Then save it as a new scenario (I saved mine as AustriaGrand) because you don't want those claims in your normal Road to War Scenario. Just a bit faster then Panther's way of doing it...

@Black_Rattler: Never played Victoria, but I want too, REALLY REALLY BADLY!
