It's not easy to show in screenshots, but here goes:
On some hair-styles and most moustaches, they do not get lighter when you mouse-over the portrait. This, for characters with moustaches, creates the illusion of a mysterious floating sausage on their face.
It is much more pronounced in-game, when you move your mouse cursor on and off a character's portrait fairly quickly.
