I was going to be starting a game with some friends that are across the country and I was considering using Hamachi. I've heard about people using it to play paradox games, but I have some questions:

1. Do we need to setup our routers to do anything before we start?
2. What MP issues arrise using Hamachi?
3. Any other advice you guys might have.

Thanks!

1. Do we need to setup our routers to do anything before we start?
You play on virtual LAN via hamachi, so ports SHOULDN'T be a problem, but with HoI and how routers and firewalls block it... unlike the other games, no idea. You just have to test, unless someone else knows the answer to this. There might be a situation that you need to have both hamachi and the ports open, but I hope someone else knows this better than me...

2. What MP issues arrise using Hamachi?
I have used hamachi for several years, so hamachi itself should work fine. Sometimes the hamachi network might be down or crowded, but this has happened to me maybe 1-3 times during 4 years, so you can call the system quite stable. Some people say that HoI might face some problems or lag with hamachi. I have tried HoI with hamachi and at least my games have worked ok.

3. Any other advice you guys might have.
Hamachi is quite useful if you have trouble joining games without it. Althrough most players here play the old fashioned way on valky or direct ip. But with valky going down for HoI, some people might prefer hamachi instead of always typing the IP in direct join, but we'll see... If you get your hamachi player group well setup and stuff, then good luck and have fun! ;)

Like Storm said, I don't remember needing to do much in order to get Hamachi to work with routers, it was pretty easy. But my memory could be faulty.

2. What MP issues arrise using Hamachi?

The main one that comes up is that if some players have Vista and others XP, only those with Vista can host for some reason. There are a few other issues that may come up, answered well enough for me to play from:

3. Any other advice you guys might have.

I'd recommend using Normal speed or below to avoid a time lag with the host. And if you and your friends could verbally talk over something like Skype while playing, it's just that much more fun. Oh, and try not to lose.

Thanks for the responses. I'll be doing some connection tests this week with my friends. Only one of us is on XP, so that shouldn't be too much of an issue.

Gorgar: I'll take your last advice to heart... :)

So I ran a test last night using Hamachi and it seems that you connect using the IP addresses that Hamachi gives you and then you can play. We can't seem to see each other via LAN.

Also, does having the Dowloaded version of Doomsday change your checksums?

At least I got my hamachi working via LAN... but as long as you can play, whatever.

Nope, it shouldn't. Patches and mods are the only things that affect. Extra graphics don't affect btw. ;)

Did you guys do anything in particular so as to see each other across Hamachi via LAN?

We had to open the three port ranges (2300-2400, 28800-29000, 47400-47700) in the router settings. If you are using a firewall, then you have to do that in the firewall settings. But before that we didn't get the game working on LAN or by direct IP. So I guess that's all what we did, took a lot of time to get it working, so at least you're fortunate that your direct IP is ok. ;)

Nope... XP user can host with vista players able to join. I use Vista, the host for our MP group uses XP. We've been playing MP with different OS's for over a year now through Hamachi with no major issues.

My sons and I play using XP on a lan, but when oldest visits with his Vista machine, it won't work. My oldest says that Vista is the problem. We will try Hamachi to see if it will work.
