Playing as Denmark, v1.02, Normal/normal. Am going to play this game very much as a Norse/Viking conquest game, so for RP reasons, I shall be marrying only Norse (Sweden, Finland, Denmark and Iceland - or those conquered and under the control of such). I shall be applying laws and religion as if I were a Viking, reducing the power of the Pope as much as it is possible to do i this game. So, no creating Bishoprics, no giving in to Papal demands. Be very interesting to see if I can keep a positive Piety amongst all this. My aims shall be the unification of all Norse countries, and then the conquest of the soft Christians. Probably as the Vikings of old did, through England, but we shall see where we head as the game progresses.
Led Zeppelin - Immigrant Song

Ah, ah,
We come from the land of the ice and snow,
From the midnight sun where the hot springs blow.
The hammer of the gods will drive our ships to new lands,
To fight the horde, singing and crying: Valhalla, I am coming!

On we sweep with threshing oar, Our only goal will be the western shore.

Ah, ah,
We come from the land of the ice and snow,
From the midnight sun where the hot springs blow.
How soft your fields so green, can whisper tales of gore,
Of how we calmed the tides of war. We are your overlords.

On we sweep with threshing oar, Our only goal will be the western shore.

So now you'd better stop and rebuild all your ruins,
For peace and trust can win the day despite of all your losing
My name is Svend Estridson, ruler of the Kingdom of Denmark. It is the year 1066, and the Kingdom of Denmark stands both on the brink of greatness, and on the edge of ruin. Only a strong ruler will be able to formulate the former, and avert the latter. Time shall see if I can be strong enough to ascend to Valhalla, and join the forefathers.

Yes, Valhalla. For despite the rise of Christianity, some still hold to the old ways. Some yearn for the days when we were young and free, and our raider ships were a byword for terror amongst the soft christians. Needs must pay lip service to this pope of theirs, and their religion. But we shall tread our own path. By Odin we shall.

My first act in shrugging off the yoke of the Church was to enact Regal Supremacy in our lands. The Church shall not stand in the way of my rulership, so a reduction in their powers was warranted. Inheritance shall remain Elective Law, for the Strong shall rule the Norse, and we will not give in to the weakness of many Christians, who give their lands to their eldest son by their first cousins. Our customs shall remain traditional, for so did our forefathers live, and so shall we.

Appointments were made to our court, but we needs must gain more courtiers, for our numbers are small. We shall see what marriages we can arrange from other Norse Countries, for there shall be no marrying the soft southerners for my court. First and foremest I need a wife myself, to create more strong sons to further the glory of the Norse. On January 9th, I married Thyra von Rendsburg of Sleswig, one of my vassals, and of good Norse stock. We were of a like age, myself 48, and my wife being 42.

My eyes immediately turned to the lands of Finland, currently held under Pagan rulership. If my plans to unite the Norse under one banner were to bear fruition, I had best prove myself by liberating Finland from the tribes that currently inhabit most of those lands. My first aim was Satakunta, currently held by a tribe styling itself of the same name, and on January 9th, I declared war upon them. My spy master informed me that they could barely field 150 men, but wishing for a quick conquest, I marshalled the forces of Skane. Loading 1100 men onto longboats, the invasion began.

On January 23rd, my son, Knud, announced his marriage to Gyrid Kamp. May their children grow to be tall, strong and fierce.

While my forces were approaching Satakunta, a native of Finland, and a claimant to the lands that I was soon to invade, one Astra, arrived at my court. He immediately pledged loyalty to myself. May he serve our cause well.

On March 14th our fleet of Longboats landed our raiders upon the shores of Satakunta, and battle was joined. After a bried battle our forces swept the enemy before them, and we began beseiging their fort.

On May 7th, my Daughter Ingrid married the Marshall of the Icelands, one Sigbjorn.

On June 24th, my youngest daughter, Gro, married Eskild of Smaland, one of the best strategists I have ever met, and my new Marshall. And a mere 8 days later, my son Benedict married one Sophie of Jylland. May their children grow to be tall, strong and fierce.

On October 21st, I hear that my son, Knud, now has a claim on the lands of Rogaland in the Kingdom of Norway. That could come in very useful later on.

And finally, in the month of November, after beseiging the enemy in their fort for 8 months, the forces of Satakunta were overrun, and are now controlled by me. The struggle for united Norse lands has begun.

Praise be to Odin.

It is now February, of the year 1068. The vikings from Halaand have been added to those of Skane, and they march on the Tribes of Tavasts. As soon as the battle was won, the vikings from Skane headed even further into the interior, declaring war on the Savoie tribe, leaving those from Halaand to continue the seige.

In news from Europe, Robert, Duke of Apulia is the new Papal Controller. As long as he keeps out of my way, I shall keep out of his.

Marshall Eskild is performing admirably. On December 8th he accepted the surrender of the Savoie, and has now pushed on into Karelan. The seige in Tavasts progresses slowly, but we can be patient. We have also started building training grounds in our provinces, to facilitate the faster training of troops.

In February 1069, my son Olaf married one Ingeborg of Vestisland. May their children grow to be tall, strong and fierce.

In September 1069, Karelen fel to my troops, and my marshall marched on Kajanaborg. The war is going beyond all my expectations, although it puts somewhat of a strain on the treasury.

Well, it seems that these Christian Popes are frail men indeed. For the old Pope did, and a new Pope has been installed. Less than 2 years he reigned. I am glad that my vikings are not so frail. Some Hungarian is the new Papal Controller, or so my Spy Master tells me.

In Januray 1070, Tavasts has fallen to our troops, and our armies march upon Kemi, while the seige of Kajanaborg continues. I have taken to allowing my Marshall to lead all of our attacks, as I have to admit to myself that I am not a battle leader, but more of a strategist. I tell him what to kill, and they wind up on the end of a viking axe. It seems to work well, and I have promised him some reward when Finland is mine.

November 1070. I am remaining with a small force in Kemi to finish the seige, while my Marshall invades Kola. This is the last of the northern tribes, so I will soon be turning my attention to the more prosperous southern tribes.

I fear that my long absences from my wife are damaging our chances of having further children. The brief interludes that we have together have produced nothing yet. Such is the price of ambition I am afraid. I do fortunately have 15 healthy grandchildren to carry on the Estrid legacy. My children breed like jackrabits I must say. I feel some for poor Harald (my eldest son) and his wife. They have had 2 miscarriages to go with their two healthy children.

On December 15th, the last Kemi resistance fell. Only Kola, currently under seige stands as a bastiance of defiance in the North, and I rush there to conclude the seige.

April 1017. I fear thta my poor Harald, my eldest son, and his wife are cursed. News has just reached me that their youngest son has died from poor health. He seems to love her though, and has no wish to put her aside.

May 21st. Kola has fallen, and now only the soft underbelly stands before my armies and a united Denmark/Norway. My Chancellor also informs me that some of the lands that I presumed were a part of Norway are in fact part of the Duchy of Karelia. Teach me to pay more attention during history classes I suppose. As soon as I have the gold, I shall create the title and hand it out to my chosen successor.

July 1071, and my armies in vade Kexham. Not a part of my original plans, but my Chancellor tells me that it shall help gaint he Duchy of Karelia. They offered me a white peace after our vikings routed them, but I refused. Somehow all the Kings of Europe are calling me "zealous" now. I think they are afraid of my success and/or my armies, but that cannot be a bad thing for what will come.

Let me tell you, I am glad that I do not have to pay marriage duty for my sons, and also that my Chancellor is doing such a good job arranging marriages whilst I am away at war. Svend, my 7th son, has just married Ingfrid Fluga, and Erik, my 6th son has married Elisabet Ulv. May their children grow to be tall, strong and fierce.

October 7th, 1071, and I can barely write for the tears. My second son, Knud, has died, leaving 4 children and his wife, Gyrid, a Widow at age 29.

Two weeks later, I hear news that brightens me somewhat. My daughter Ingrid is to marry Sven, Duke of Ostergotland, and first heir in line to the Kingdom of Sweden. It seems that news had not yet reached me of her husband'd death before this new marriage came to be. May their children grow to be tall, strong and fierce.

February 22nd. On this day I granted Olaf, my 5th son, the titles of Count of Kemi ond Kola, as well as Duke of Karelia. My Chancellor tells me that this should be enough to rank him as my heir at the moment, should something unforseen happen to me, and election occur. It will also be a good way for him to learn the basics of rulership. May he rule long and well.

Tis a new year again. I feel like I have been capmaigning forever now. However it is only 6 years, being 1073 now. Vodi is now mine, after their chieftain insulted me. he shall insult me no more. Onto Viborg our armies march. I have also called up the Fyn vikings, for attrition has lowered our numbers some, and we shall need them to conquer the last of Finland. They should arrive sometime soon.

Today the clergy demanded the right to tax the Peasants more than they do already. I sent the greedy swine packing, though they loved me not for it.

October 11th, 1073. Viborg has fallen, and all that remains between me and uniting the Duchy of Finland is the Tribe of Soumi, currently occupying the provinces of Finland, Nyland and Osterbotten. My spies tell me that they can field 1200 men, and we have but 1350 men. I believe that we will win though, through superior tactics. Nyland shall be our first target, from Viborg.

In a series of battles lasting 16 days, our forces have defeated those of Nyland, and we have begun our seige. Our scouts tell us that the enemy armies in Finland and Osterbotten have not moved, though they wer raised when we invaded. For losses of 60 or so, we inflicted almost 200 casualties on the enemy. Maybe that is thy whey continue to cower as the seige progresses.

Today we called the Estate Generals. We need the money, so we asked for large contributions, and were shocked when we received over 750 gold. Denmark grows rich indeed under our rulership. Lucky we did however, because no sooner had we raised the gold, than famine broke out in Haaland. It cost us 300 gold to aleviate the problem, and along with more training grounds, there went the majority of our gold reserves. In the next moment, moneylenders show up in Kajanaborg. I am unsure whether to be happy or not about this, as I did not invite them.

May 10th, 1074, and Nyland falls to my seige. My troops are eager to head home for a well deserved break, and so set off at a run to Finland.

July 4th. We are beseiging Finland, and the enemy has retreated behind his fort walls. A pretty local wench caught my eye, and I have been so long away from home that I could not help myself. I am sure that my poor Thyra would understand.

In other news, it appears that Sweden is at War with Norway. Also our Ingrid, married to Sven of Ostergotland has had two healthy boys by him, to go with the two by her first husband.

December 26th, 1074. Today in Skana, a great royal feast was held. I financed it myself, and yet could not attend due to this seige in Finland. Ah, even I am beginning to long for home now. A warm fire, a warm mead, and a warmer wife. Soon, soon. Finland is now mine, and only Osterbotten remains.

September 11, 1075. Osterbotten has fallen, and all of Finland and Karelia belong to me. In gratitude for service to the crown, I have passed out the following titles:
- To my Eldest son, Harald, I granted the Count of Kajanaborg and the title of Duke of Finland.
- To my 3rd son, Benedikt, I granted the titles of Count of Viborg and the newly created Duke of Skane.
- To my Marshall, I garnted the title of Count of Savolaks, for his 9 years of outstanding service.

In other places of the world, Sweden has concluded peace with Norway, though Sweden is at war with Narke, a formerly independant province from memory. Peace reigns over the majority of the rest of the world. And for me, that warm bed, warm mead, and warm wife call.

Praise be to Odin.

That is some realm you have there. Way to go! But just one question: Is it possible to form a kingdom in Finland? I'm asking as it has very many duchies like Ireland, and Ireland can be united.

Unfortunately, no, there is no "King of Finland" title. Was a bit disappointed about that one myself actually. Oh, and there's only really two Duchies in those lands that I have conquered to date. Finland (5 provinces) and Karelia (7 provinces? I forget atm).

Am curious as to whteher people like the style of this AAR or not. I am deliberately making it a tad gruff and unpolished, to match the rather, er, gruff and unpolished nature of the Vikings that I am trying to emulate. ;)

Carry on!
You have posted something about not having much time to spend with your wife, but think about the age of your wife - she will give you no more children, be sure of it. :D

Oh, I fuly realise that, I did so when I married a 42 year old. But there's a chance that he wouldn't, so I'm having him blame the distance/warfare. She's close to 50 herself now, so I'm pretty sure there's nothing happening there. ;)

That's not my biggest concern though - whether I can survive without ever making a bishopric or going on a crusade (for a while at least) and the lack of piety that that will represent - that's my major concern, but also the reason that I started this, to see how well it would work.

Good luck, but I don't have a clue how it will turn out for you.

Peace reigns over Denmark, and we have implemented a system of improvements in our realm. Our warriors need time to rest, to sire more strong children and rebuild our armies of viking raiders.

The church is again showing it's true colours. They demanded the right to tithe peasants more than they already do. We refused, and are now they dislike us that much more. I think that they shall continue to press their claims upon us, and we shall continue to refuse. I know not where this shall end, however. I shall needs have a chat to Olaf, who sits highest in terms of succession, and ensure that he knows to keep up the Viking heritage of his forefathers. But I am still healthy, so there needs be no rush.

--------------------------
(written in a different hand)

July 19th, 1076. Today my father, Svend, lies dead at the age of 58. It is said that he died attempting to sire a child upon his wife. That would be just like him, always enjoying like to the fullest.

I, Olaf Estridson have been proclaimed the new King of Denmark by my peers. And I must admit to being somewhat shocked by the journals of my father. I knew that he bore no love for the church, but I did not realise the depths of his scheming and plotting, nor his devotion to the old ways. I fear that with his death, much of the prestige associated with the Kingdom of Denmark has declined. And I find that I must prove myself to the world before they shall accept me.

For now it is enough that I continue the rebuilding began by my father, but I must make different plans, for I shall not be able to lay claim to the thrones of Sweden or Norway without proving myself elsewhere first. Well, I could conquer them, but nobody would recognise it, and unless they do, I would accomplish little more than garrisoning my soldiers in their lands.

I needs must think more on this.

In the meantime, I have granted my brother, Erik, the lands of Kemi, Kola and Satakunta, as well as the title of Duke of Karelia. my advisors inform me that, should something unforseen happen to myself, Erik should be next in line for the throne should a vote occur.

But for now I have had enough of this plotting. I go to mourn my father, my king.

June 2, 1082. Almost 6 years of peace, and our warriors begin to yearn for battle. Our rebuilding program has gone well, and now training grounds for our warriors, forestries, fishing wharves and courts of law can be found in all of our lands. Some have even built Sawmills.

My heart and mind are still unsure as to what to do about the Church. I dislike them, and hold to many of the old ways myself, and yet if one wishes to succeed in this world, it seems that one must pay homage to them. Fortunately matters have not come to a head yet, but I do not know what I shall do when needs must make a decision.

My prestige amongst my peers slowly grows, yet I needs do something to expidate the matter. Attacking Christian lands will not help this, so I must turn to Pagan lands, and preferably lands close by. My eyes naturally fall on the tribes of Mecklemburg and Pomerania. Both are close by, and should fall to our armies. We have planed our initial invasion into Lubeck, where we believe the greatest enemy strength lies. We have called up the raiders from Skana, Halland and Fyn, numbering almost 3400 fierce vikings.

July 2nd, 1082. We have landed in Lubeck, and find 1300 enemies awaiting us on a plain, arrayed in lines of battle.

July 21st, 1082. After a series of battles and skirmished lasting 19 days, the enemy flees before us. We have killed about 1000 of their numbers, for the loss of some 240 vikings. But I believe that another force of approximately 500 approaches from Mecklemburg, so we must remain on guard as we begin the seige.

August 15th, 1082. The forces that we believed were heading our way have instead set sail, and beseiged Fyn. for now I am not concerned, for I believe that if I can take Luneck and them Mecklemburg quickly, they shall be forced to peace with me. And Fyn can hold out long enough that should this not work, we have time to relieve them.

September 8th, 1082. The seige continues. But I have received news today that my 2nd youngest brother, Nikulas has died. He leaves a pregnant widow Ingegerd, a son Bjorn, and a daughter Rikissa. I have declared a day of mourning.

September 27th. Lubeck is ours. One of my brothers, Niels, a Theologian of some repute has been begging me to appoint him a Bishop. I still have mixed feelings on the matter, but I cannot refuse my brother. As such I have creared a Bishopric in Tavasts, and granted it to him. I was loathe to do this, but he is my brother, and I can't stand to see him so unhappy and nagging me all the time.

We have begun to march on Mecklemburg, and reports tell us that almost no progress has been made at the seige of Fyn.

October 7th, 1082. We have entered Mecklemburg, and discovered some 800 men arrayed against us. A few skirmished were fought, and shortly an offer of peace was made, with a measly bribe of 8 gold thrown in. I laughed in his face, and over the next two and a half weeks, fought various battles with the enemy until they finally realised that they could not win. We have discovered Malaria in Mecklemburg, so we have sent the forces of Fyn and Halland off to beseige Rostock whilst I take Mecklemburg. The risk must be mine, though my advisors tell me that I should leave myself, and let others take the risk. But I am not a baby in diapers to stand behind my mother's skirts, so I ignore them.

November 19th, 1082. My Marshall, Astur of Satakunta, has defeated the enemy in Rostock, and begun a seige.

April 4th, 1083. Mecklemburg has fallen to our vikings, and we march upon Rostock to help our Marshall. As we thought, once Mecklemburg fell, their forces lost all heart, and abandoned the seige of Fyn to return to their homes, under a new ruler, myself. I have also granted my titles to my brothers, Svend received the title of Count of Kexholm, and Knud the title of Count of Karelen.

June 2nd, 1083. Rostock has fallen to our forces, and we now march on Werle, the last bastion of strength for the tribe of Mecklemburg. In good news, the Malaria in Mecklemburg has disspiated as well. Now we just need deal with the Highway Robbers, Smugglers and Thieves that infest the place. A Court of Law has begun construction, and I have told the warriors of the province to help flush those thieves out.

October 29th. Werle has fallen to our forces, and I have granted it, and the newly created title of Duke of Mecklemburg, to my brother Svend, the recently appointed Count of Kexholm. He would likely now be ranked 2nd i the line of succession behind Erik, Duke of Karelia. My brothers do well.

We have now declared war on the tribe of Pommerania, and march our forces into Wolgast.

November 26th, 1083. Today we began the seige of Wolgast, after routing the enemy forces. One could get to like this fighting. There is a certain sense of exhileration in leading a charge of 200 Knights against the enemy, and watching them flater under your charge.

February 22nd. Wolgast has fallen, and I have granted it to the Count of Sjaellend, who has in turn granted it to his son, Gnupa. If I shower too much on my brothers, my other vassals may get upset, so I hopefully this will appease them some.

I am beginning to conceive a plan to unite all of the lands around the Baltic sea to my rule. They are all Pagan lands with the exception of Pskov, so this should not upset too many people. And it would give me mastery of the sea, as well as hopefully enough prestige amongst my peers that I may be able to finally lay claim to the thrones of Sweden and Norway.

August 14th, 1085. Stettin, Slupsk and Danzig have all fallen to my troops. My eldest daughter, Bothilde has married one Geraud de Luxembourg, Duke of Luxembourg. against my wishes, may I add. Seems she ran off and married him after he visited my court whilst I was off campaigning. Not much that I can do about it now unfortunately, however it did raise some 900 gold in duties.

August 6th, 1086. Marienburg and Chelminskie are now ours after we defeated the tribe of Prussia. Have called up vikings from Lubeck, Finland and Vodi to march into Sambia, the next step in our drive to control the Baltic sea. This was necessary to cover losses, as our original 3400 had dwindled through deaths to some 2000. Now our numbers reach 3100 again, and this should provide ample for the next few year's campaigning.

November 16th, 1086. Germany has declared war upon my brother Svend, the Count of Wolgast. We have decided that this cannot be allowed, and have decided to back our vassal. With any luck we can finish the seige of Sambia before anything too much happens.

January 28th 1087. Sambia falls, and the Germans have not dared show their faces yet. We rush off to Stettin to see in case they dare show themselves.

April 5th, 1087. We landed in Stettin, only to be told that the Svend had been defeated by the German King's private army from Wurttemberg. We have raced here in time to halt the seige, and now face the German king accross the field of battle. Our 2600 troops should be more than a match for his 500 or so.

April 23rd, 1087. The Germans have been annihilated. Our scouts cannot find a single one left alive in Danish lands. Our 2500 troops march on Wurtemburg.

July 15th, 1087. Our forces have marched unopposed through Germany, and have laid seige to Wurttemburg. Strangely enough, none of his vassals laid a finger upon us, they sat back in their castles and watched the viking horde ride right by them. Methinks they like their king not much at all.

December 28th, 1087. The seige at Wurttemberg has ended, however the sneaky German marched some forces up to Mecklemburg and laid seige to it. We raced up to relieve the seige, and are about to face 330 Germans o the field of battle.

January 1, 1088. The Pope has given a speach in a field in France, calling on all Christian nations to crusade against the muslims who currently hold the Holy lands. I am not sure if I can ignore this call, as it would eventually lead to revolt amongst my vassals, as they mostly hold to Christian ways. For now though, Germany must be dealt with.

January 14th, 1088. We have defeated the Germans in battle, and forced him to the negotiating table. We forced him to end his war with Wolgast* and give up his claims on Wolgast and Slupsk. For the moment I have sent all my troops home on some well needed rest, for I fear that I shall need to call on them soon enough.

I have handed out various lands and duchies to my siblings, and now can count 6 dukes as my vassals. Most of my lands now lie around the Baltic sea. One worry to me is that my advisors now tell me that the second most powerful man in my realm is one Gnupoa, Count of Wolgast, the very man whose hide I saved after the German King gave it a good spanking. Fortunately my brother Erik, Duke of Karelia still commands a more powerful position than Gnupa. So the viking dynasty is safe for now.

In news from the wide world, the King of Germany, my erstwhile foe, is also King of Italy and Burgundy. Poland is at war with the County of Orava, and the Kingdom of Hungary. The Empire of Byzantium is at war with the Principality of Gallich. The King of France is at war with his former vassal, the County of Nevers. The Kingdom of Leon is at war with Emirate of Valencia, and has lost most of his lands.

* Note that for those wondering, Wolgast had concluded it's own peace with Germany. It is only for the purposes of this AAR that I stated that it was me that forced the Germans to peace with them.

OOC: The reason for the change in policy from Uniting Scandanavia (Norse lands as my rulers refer to them) to controlling the Baltic sea was simply a matter of necessity. Up until now I have played most of my games either on easy settings, or as small Duchies (Ireland for example). I plain didn't realise that it would cost me over 2000 prestige to lay claim to a title of King of Sweden or Norway. And of course I didn't realise that Scandanavia mostly had Elective laws, so marrying to lay claim to them wouldn't work either, unless I got very, very lucky. I really should plan/investigate these things better.

And having my King die at age 58 and losing some 600 prestige didn't help either.

So, I needed another plan, or needed to abandon the AAR alltogether. So, in rare moment of lucidity, I decided that the lands around the Baltic Sea would have to do for now. Hopefully I can scrounge up enough prestige from that to manage to lay claim to one of the Kingdoms of Sweden or Norway. And with my luck, just as I do, the King will die.

Oh, and the Bishopric... :eek:o

I am playing two games atm. One for this AAR, and one as England. When I gave out that Bishopric, I completely forgot which game I was playing, and the fact that I was not supposed to be handing them out. By the time I realised, it was about a year later, and with monthly autosaves and no manual save for quite a while, I was stuck with either going back 5 years to my manual save and playing all that over again, or writing it in somehow. So in came the complaining theologian brother, and some explanation for such a turnaround.

I am beginning to think that playing this without ever doing anything for the church ain't going to work, either on a gameplay basis, or on a logical basis (like if/when I start getting conversion events), but we'll see.

hmmm, I guess you could try a game where you just pillage everything in sight and don't annex too many things...

My First game (that I just quit yesterday) looked nearly the same but at the beginning of the 12th century my heir turned against me and revolution wracked my country again and again. Even my former loyal servents went to war against me.
I was able to reconquer the countrys again and again, but every new vassal turned against me anew.

So I left the game when danmark was aflame again... hope your's turns out better!

No, don't give up! I am quite enjoying this Pagan defiance of Rome. All the power to you my friend!
Dominate the Baltic!
Unite Scandinavia! and then...
March on Rome, and BURN IT TO THE GROUND!!!

:(

Seems that my savegame has become corrupted (I've checked, and there's barely 1/2 of the info I'd expect to see in the file, it seems to end rather abruptly), and I'd need to go back to 1075 to load up this game. Teach me to play other games and overwrite my autosaves. :(

I am not sure that I wish to play the last 10 years again, so this may be the end of this AAR. Feeling rather disappointed right now, so I'm not making any definate decisions, but I'm not optomistic.
