I have played this game earlier on this machine with no problems. It has been standing on my shelf but today I felt like playing, because EU is one of those classics that I will never get tired of. Here is what I did:

1. Installed the game.
2. Downloaded the UK 1.10 pacth which was the wrong one... I should have downloaded the scandinavian patch, as I live in Denmark.
3. I applied this patch, but was told by the game that the disc was wrong... I figured my error out.

4. I uninstalled the game, removed all reg entries and made sure the Install Shield info wasn't there either.
5. I installed the game again after having rebooted.
6. I applied the right patch and started the game. I didn't get the error message instead the game just exited to desktop right after the movies or whenever I ended the movies myself by ESC or left mouse button. I even renamed the AVI folder so the movies wasn't played... now the game just crashed and I didn't even see any pretty pictures. I also noticed that the EU CD wasn't recognized by windows... the symbol for the CD isn't shown, just this annoying "windows has no clue what this is" file icon.

Please can someone help me... I don't want to drop this game into the garbage bin yet.

Thanks for reading :)

Oh I just forgot my system:

- Windows ME
- T-bird 1333
- 512MB RAM
- Over 20 GB free on the install HDD
- G-force2 AsusV7700 (newest non XP drivers... nVidia 12.41)
- Both monitor and Video card supports 800x600x16
- SB Live 5.1 set up with 5.1 surround speakers
- MTRP 50x CD-rom (and EU has always worked fine as has all other games)
- Logitech optic mouseman something...
- Realtek RTL8139(A) PCI Fast Ethernet card
- A cup of coffee and cig...
- And I have of course read the thread where I was told to: - Mention that you read this thread before posting ;)"

Hmmm I seem so remember some driver problems (nVidia) with some game. The 1.10 should have taken care of that as the drivers I am currently using are older than the 1.10 patch... can't remember if it was EU or some other game though. I have the Old 6.50 nVidia drivers somewhere. If this is the problem please dear developers do try to download the nVidia drivers and make those problems go away so I don't have to change to old drivers whenever I want to play EU ;)

that game you are referring to, it's got to be Shogun! :) Nice game, but those driver problem got the better of me (or should I say the worst? ;) ).

Anyway, latest driver for Geforce 2 are here:
http://www.nvidia.com/view.asp?PAGE=windows9x

They are called detonator XP, but they work with ME. It is version 21.83. However, that shouldn't be the problem.

I think it is something with the 1.10 patch and the Danish version, but I'm not sure. Many people reported problems (crash) with the danish version. In the download section (same places where you found the patch), there is a text.csv file to download. It is the english version of the text file and it might solve some of your problems.

Otherwise, try to look at Vision Park's site (link is one of the styckies), they might have the older patch (1.09) witch might be ok for you.

Give me feedback...

P.S. I truly appreciate you took the time to read trough the sticky thread :D

Hehe yeah Shogun was the game... and fine game too. I haven't got the add-on yet but it lets you play campaign games in MP too.

I have the 21.83 drivers installed as they are wonderful with Ghost Recon, I just tried the older ones to be sure it wasn't just the new XP drivers for 98/ME. I have tried uninstalling and removing every trace of the game and then rebooting. Then I installed the game and tried starting it before I applied any patches and still it crashed. I really can't remember if I have ever played without the 1.09 patch, because I didn't get the game when it came out but after seeing a friend play it I saw how fine a strategy game it is. I could try the 1.09 patch if I can find it as I'm very sure It worked fine. And I'll just try installing the game on my other computer too. Do you have any idea why windows won't show the proper CD icon for the EU CD. I think it happened after I patched with that wrong UK patch... and now it just stays that way no matter what I do.

I will install winXP as soon as it is available in Denmark, perhaps that will help... a completely fresh system.

Oh... In fact I do have the 1.09 patch here ... forgot to delete it - lucky me :) ... I'll just try that too.

And thank you for taking your time to help me.

Windows is weird. I had that happen with backup CDs as well as retail CDs.

try to remove the DMA setting in the control panel, as indicated in one of stickied threads, it might help. Sync data transfer and disconnect can also create problem with certain media.

I tested the 1.09 patch and same problem. DMA and Auto start are both disabled. I simply can't play EU any more on this machine.

I have now tested EU on my very old P2-400, 256MB RAM, TNT2 ... runs fine! The CD shows up just fine with a CD symbol instead of this strange "Windows has no clue what this is" icon. I use that old machine as a server and don't want to play the game there. If this is some strange compability issue with my CD-ROM or other hardware will EU2 also have this feature? ... would be nice to know when considering buying the game ;)

As I wrote earlier when I installed the wrong UK patch I was told to insert the right CD. I don't think it's my CD-ROM and I really don't want to go through the trouble of reinstalling windows and all my programs if it won't do any good.

Problem.

After movies the game changes resolution a few times and quits to desktop. Both my monitor and video card supports 800x600x16 and I have tried setting my desktop to this resolution.

can you swap the CD-ROM on both machines? That would be the easiest thing to do.

If you don't want to do it, I have another possible fix, but you'll need your Windows CD near you and it will take half a dozen reboot of windows, and there's no guarantee everything will work fine after this (it should, but sometimes, it just doesn't ;) )

Hehe I'm intriqued... sounds interresting. I really would like to play EU again - at least until EU2 is released here. But by all means please do tell me your "dangerous" solution :D

Oh it jsut occured to me that what you want to suggest is a format c: and a reinstall of windows. I have already done that and have a completely clean system. The only thing installed besides Windows and drivers is EU. Swapping the CD-ROMs would be possible, but frankly it will be my final option. I have sent an e-mail to EU support explaining my problem and perhaps they have some ideas too... thanks again.

No it wasn't a reformat :) .

I was to suggest you boot in Safe Mode, and go to Control Panel, System, Device Manager and delete just about everything in there. The only problem is if you don't have all the drivers for your comp, it might create problem. Video card might be a pain to reconfigure, but it will eliminate any and all potential conflict in hardware. The problem with Windows 9x is that sometimes, when you change the drivers for a peripheral, it creates a double, and even if not seen in the regular windows environment, it can create crashes, or freezes.

Try it, if it asks for files that aren't on the CD, point to the c:\windows\system directory.

Just before you do that however, try something else:
- Disable your sound card
- Try a "generic mouse" if you have one at hand
- Disable your lan card

If the game works correctly, than re-enable the peripherals one by one.

Thanks for the good advice I'll try those things now and report back... I have just played Ghost Recon for a few hours with my squad, so I need to get my adrenaline level down again :)

HAHAHAHAHA GAME WORKING AGAIN!

YEAH!

I ´have solved the mystery. I did all of the above... but nothing helped me. Then I did something... I don't know exactly why I did it. I was pretty pissed and durring the movie I ejected the CD and put it back into the box. I pressed the mouse button so the game would crash and return me to windows. BUT IT DIDN'T ... THE GAME LOADED! It was my CD-ROM after all, but at least now I have a fairly easy solution to the problem and am able to play. Thanks for all the good advice people it ís appreciated. Now I'll just go play a game of EU :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

Yes I have to agree with you. Prior to the age of computers we were bothered by mundane questions like "Whats the meaning of life?". Now we have far more important mysteries to solve.
