Did you know that XP has a built-in firewall?

You probably need to check your connection-settings to see if your firewall is activated and what its settings are. You need to allow Vicky to act as a server to host, but if you only join a game that's not needed.

First of all: *Always use a firewall!!!* Turn it on! :)

Now, Paradox-games uses DirectX for their net-connection.
Have you checked if you allow DirectX (DPLAYERSVR.EXE) access to the net?

Also, you might be behind a router you don't know about (your ISP?)
Several people here are unable to connect from their univerities (the universities running routers that doesn't open the ports needed by DirectX & the game)

well for some reason the DPLAYERSVR.EXE file just wouldn't respond :(
i opened dxdiag, and on the network tab it showed that he was missing some dlls, when i tried to register them(run-> regsvr32.exe /i dpwsockx.dll) it said it couldn't register them.
what's going on?
do you know of some useful support site or something?

btw thanks for the help.

I'd try to d/l DirectX 9.0b and reinstall it if I were you.
That's the only thing I can think of right now as you seem to have a botched installation.

Hope that will help....

From your posts, it seems like you are able to connect to V-net (ie. where you team up with other players).

If this is correct, how does the game behave? Does it freeze up completely (crtl-alt-del needed to end it?) or does it only freeze for a while as it looks for other 'puters out there?

If it freezes completely, there is some thing wrong with your DirectX, otherwise, if the game continues and you can choose channel, chat and so on, the problem is not with DirectX.

If, when trying to join a game, the game hangs for a while before giving an error-msg. the problem probably is firewall related.
If *you* are unable to connect to his game because the game can't figure out *his* IP-address, *he* is behind a firewall.
If *he* is unable to connect to your game for the same reason, you are behind a firewall.

If you are unable to log on to V-net, your DirectX is either not working at all, or you are behind a IP-maskerading router (located somewhere between you and V-net). If that is the case, you need to get the router to forward the IP-packets to play Paradox MP-games.

In addition, remeber to check out the MP FAQ-section in HOI & EU2 on these boards. They might have a Q&A for problems like yours, even if not exacty the same :)

If you manage to get the game to log on to V-net, you are already using the Direct-Play function in DirectX, so now you know your DirectX works at least :)

Am I understanding you correctly when you say that *nothing* happens when you click on the "Host" or "Join" button? Nothing at all?? Because that is weird!

Press ctrl-alt-del to check what program you run *before* you try to join or host.
Press ctrl-alt-del again after you've tried to host or join to check if there is a new program running in the background. If there is, that program might intercept your effort to join/host a game and thus neuter your efforts...

Try to turn your firewall on. Set it to *full* security. I can't remember if the XP-firewall will ask you for premission if a program without permission try to get online. However, if you can set the XP-firewall to do so, you will be told what programs that tries to get online when you log on to V-net.
It should be Victoria.exe and DPLAYERSVR.EXE
Victoria needs permission to get online to join & chat and DPLAYERSVR.EXE need permission to host, if I remember correctly.

No dump the firewall.

Who the hell on this planet wants to hack your computer?
Got some super secret take over the world plans on your comp???

Puh-lease

I'm actually having this sort of trouble as well. I click on valk but it says that the main server is not responding. However my friend was able to sign on just fine and when I signed on to play EU2 it also worked fine. I would assume that any settings that blocked my access to valk for vicky would also block it for EU2. Any advice?
