My computer skills are so basic that even using Modtek is stressful and i never managed to get Roguetech working, so having this built-in loader working would be a dream.

But everywhere i look i see people saying this modloader is broken and Modtek is the way to go.

So, i´d like to know. HBS modloader is working now? Or the above still true.

Thanks :)

No changes yet. Hopefully with 1.9
A few mods do work - I am using the "New Stores" mod with the built in mod loader and it is working fine but the very similar "Stores restored" mod is bugged with it and needs modtech
I am in a similar situation as you - I have zero modding skills and would much prefer a built in system

Yes, there are some mods that work right now, but not very many.
There is still more to be told about what's in 1.9 but I really do hope a functional modloader is part of it.
Modtek is/has been awesome, but I get tired of going through all the rigamarole every time a patch drops.

A stickied post would help keep this issue and the current status easily visible! :)
@Havamal, I know we must exercise self-discipline when it comes to stickies. Does this topic rise to the level of a temporary sticky?

We dont normally sticky "are we there yet" threads unless there's a dev post providing empirical data that is helpful to share, (oh and if theres room on the front page of the sub).
Atm, while I empathize that many here might be anxiously anticipating such info, this thread unfortunately doesn't meet the criteria stated above imho.

I'd be happy to revisit that when there is more news or a fix though.

I recommend you checking out modtek which you can get over on github sorry i can't post a link for it just google it
Modtek has been out for over a year and is tried and true

not only that....what do you think HBS used as basis for its modloader?

Yeah i know its based on modtek what i meant is that the official modloader is still broken
if you want to run mods then at the moment modtek is the way to go

My bad wasn't aimed at you.
Was pointing out to others who are hesitant to use modtek...there was no need to do so.

Its cool bud I don't understand why people are reluctant to use modtek seeing as its more stable and proven to work
even if HBS finally get the modloader fixed i am sticking with modtek as its stable and works

Some people (like me) aren´t good with PCs and would feel relief with a easier/more user friendly alternative, such as a official modloader integrated to the game.

Modtek might sound simple to some (most?), but to me, every time i use it, its going back to CWolf guide and being fearful to breaking the game from extracting a nexus file until the game loads a save successfully.

Modtek is incredibly easy to use all you do is create a mods folder put the mods and modtek in that folder open the modtek folder click inject and you are done
And we should continue to encourage everyone so included to find this out for themselves... and you know what? Many will try and thank us for the encouragement.

But I am with @BARBOSA (Aries) on this one. If it wasn’t for my fear of letting @OathOfFealty and @CWolfs down, I would have NEVER attempted to add even a single Mod to BATTLETECH, yet alone have a half dozen Mod Folders (all misnamed but one, though each includes a different set of Mods) all lined up for quick re-naming and immediate use.

There is a great swath of our BATTLETECH Community who is being left behind and frozen out of Modded BATTLETECH Gameplay.

If... and we don’t know yet if Update 1.9 addresses it or not... but if 1.9 fixes HBS’s Modloader, then we are well on our way of ensuring all who want to try Modded gameplay, can enjoy Modded gameplay.

Here’s to hoping 1.9 fixes what is broken with 1.8’s “Official Mod Support.”

Totally agree with you Prussian buddy where the vanilla version of BT is a great game on it's own but with the mods that are out there like roguetech BTA 3062 etc the totally open the game up in a whole new way
Like you when I first tried mods i was afraid in case of breaking the game like you i have various mods folders everything from roguetech, BTA 3062 , etc

For example roguetech adds the entire innnersphere map plus all the factions plus the clans
BTA also adds an whole new way of playing
So I will say this HBS for the love of god fix the very very broken mod loader

I'm not completely incompetent with PCs. I always muddle through stuff like adding mods, but I find it to be an irritating, frustrating, stressful process. For me having to figure out what prerequisites I need, then find them, then figure out how to install them, then find the mods I need on Nexus (with it's god awful interface) and then figure out how to install those, then do it all over again 3 months later (just long enough to forget how I did it all last time) is a significant turn off.

Maybe you don't mind all that, but most of the time I'd rather not play than deal with any of it.

When I heard that there'd be mod support I was excited. Mod support to me means that I don't have to do all that crap all the time. Since I still have to do all that crap in order to have mods I can only conclude that this game doesn't have mod support yet. That's disappointing.

Yeah, you'll still have to do all of that, pretty much. The official mod support pretty much just means you put the mods in a different location, and you get a nifty UI to support it (which ModTek then adapted to use as well). But on the flip side, there are a lot of standalone mods out there (and in that, I include ones that depend only on ModTek). Just a lot of the focus gets put on the big three bundles, the ones with a ton of mods that are often designed/balanced around working with each other.

But it will be nice if they can get it working right. For the more casual computer user to not have to track down that modtek thing and deal with unfamiliar phrasing like "inject"... it'd be a good thing. One less scary thing to deal with.

I wouldn't expect the major mod packs to work with the next release of the official mod loader. It's a matter of different standards.

All of those mod packs introduce major changes to the game and HBS might not be interested in making the official mod loader capable of all those changes because of time, resources and how much they make the game mechanics different from vanilla.

And RT/BTA/etc. had a long parallel and divergent development path from vanilla since modding wasn't supported and it will be easier for them to keep using ModTek rather than bringing their mods back to HBS development standard, which all the massive changes that it would require for those mods.

I had a faint hope that 1.8 would allow my mods to run without ModTek, but at the same time it would be unrealistic for it to happen, exactly because of the different standards. But for 1.9 I'm more optimistic since HBS contacted me because one of the bugs I reported with the official mod loader when using the Hyades Rim and it has been fixed, since it was a minor issue.
