I was just crusading as the Emperor of the HRE, when suddenly the excommunicated Count of Geneve was accused of heresy. I could choose to accuse him too or support him against it, and I chose the former and tried to get him imprisoned. The guy was not caught and started to rebel.
I put up a little army to storm his castle, and during that time I take a look at my family tree. There I see, that my beloved 20 year old heir was in jail, and it turned out, he was in the jail of the excommunicated lord of Geneve. As the siege went well, I thought, he will be out in no time.
After taking the now excommunicated rebel leader's castle, I banished the leader and looked after my son, who was still imprisoned in the dungeon of Geneve, and his holder was the new lord of the Castle, a 3 year old boy. I started to laugh, but in a minute I was informed, that my only heir died in the prison. I stopped laughing then.
Is it how it is supposed to be? Shouldn't I be able to free the prisoners of conquered castles? Or is it normal to get a castle, and leave my son in the cellar to rot?

(Btw, after it became hilarious, with some inner monologues from my emperor, about how his other children are unable to raise a sword properly, not like the former heir (other sons aged 9 and 7), and the emperor was wishing for his wife to go in labor with a new, and better son (after 8 other children!), or "she will find herself falling out of a tower accidentally, but there is clearly nothing wrong with me".
