Hey was wondering if anyone can help me, I play Hearts of Iron alot and suddenly one day it stopped working for me, I haven't installed any mods or anything just one day decided to stop starting games. As I click on the flag then click start game HoI crashes and the stupid Vista window pops up saying that the program doesn't respond.

My system specs are this:

Intel Core Quad Q6600

4 Gigs of Ram

32-bit operating system VISTA
Video Card: Nvidia 8800 GTS

Games: Hearts of Iron 2, Doomsday, Arma 1.2 Gamersgate Arma and patches.

As you can see this computer is more then capable of operating HOI as it was a couple weeks ago when it was working.

Ok, first off, I have Trend Micro Internet security and allowed for it to not block HoI, second, Recently my Vista thing that auto updates for me came on the other night, next thing I know HoI stops working so no idea what caused it to stop though it could be related to the Update.

Next I have turned off UAC cause it pissed me off and it's been off since I like got the new comp with Vista on it.

As far as possible corrupt files or anything of that nature, I have completely removed HoI 2 from my comp and reinstalled, first installing everything back up to Arma 1.2 but that didn't work. So, took everything back off then just tried regular HoI 2, no luck still does the same thing.

Sound and Video cards are all up to date.

I've tried running as Admin, even though I'm already logged in as an Admin, tried running in Compatability mode, still doesn't work. So I'm running out of things to try, so hope someone can help me out, cause out of all the games I have I play Hearts of Iron 2 ALOT, so sucks that my system decided to stop liking this game.

Apreciate any help that can be given.

That definitely sounds related to the update that you installed. Do you have any idea what kind of update it was that installed on your system? That would help alot, instead of shooting in the dark.

Ok, quick heads up too, I have Mod 34 installed as a seperate install like as in a different place and I booted that up and it didn't stop it from running. Going to check on that update thing, any ideas on how to look for that sort of thing?

-Update: Ok, I think I've pinpointed what the issue might be, there's gotta be something wrong with the install, because both Total Realism Mod and Mod 34 work with no crashes yet Hearts of Iron 2 Regular still does.

They are all installed with thier own folder etc, so it's not an issue with overidding files.

-Another Update: I found the files that were installed:
-Windows Search 4.0 for Vista
-Windows Malcious Software Removal Tool
-Generic Vista Update whatever that is there's lots these.

Ones listed are the only ones since HoI stopped working.

Ah, I have no experience with those two mods. If it were any other one, I might be of more help.

As for the update issue, go to "Start",
Click "Windows Update"
Click update history
You should have a very comprehensive list of every update ever installed on your system using that feature.
Also, what service pack are you running?
This might make a difference as well.

By the way, Vista sucks.
Just had to put that out there. I've only got it on my new laptop. All of my other computers are XP SP2. I hate Vista with utmost passion.

Me too. That's one variable down.

Ok, another thing that's messed up is that alot of the icons like, for instance the shortcut to HoI 2 isn't displaying. Also when I click on the CD Icon under my Computer that doesn't display as well. Dunno is this helps?

I've had that issue on my laptop as well.

It's a Vista thing.

As long as the game works, try to ignore it - as irritating as it may be.

Someone should go torture the design team for Windows Vista for having a severe lack of competency.

Actually, try this.

Try re-installing a clean version of the game - but not in the C://Program Files directory. Try first uninstalling everything and then re-installing it in the "My Documents" directory instead. Alot of people experience problems from Vista when installing into the "Program Files" directory.

Sorry for running you around in circles.

No luck

No luck there, tried it, still had the same problem. :(

-Update Good news I finally got it working, however, now I need to figure out if it was because of the Program Files thing, or, the fact that I cancelled out Windows Vista Side Bar, cause I read in another forum that Goggle sidebar was messing with HoI.

In anycase thnx so much for the help now I can do my AAR which was a really neat situation that I ended up in as Hungary towards the end of WWII, Fortress Budapest.

My Documents is also protected by UAC and Windows.... Not a good idea.

Try C:\Games instead

To OP.

Make sure you have the latest Video driver for you card.

If you have 4 Gigs of RAM you should be using Vista 64 bit.... This could be a memory addressing issue....

You can test this by temporarily removing 2 gigs of ram.. then running your PC and seeing if HOI2 works.

I recommend the following

1. Uninstall everything.
2. Install HOI2 DD. In C:\Games\HOI2DD
3. Install HOI2 Arma Overwrite C:\games\HOI2DD
4. Install HOI2 Arma 1.2 patch (same place as 3 above)
5. Rename AVI folder to AVI Back
6. Test.

I don't think it's a Memory issue since when I got the ram installed HoI worked fine, trying the C:\Games thing, anyways also, assuming it is a problem with Ram, wtf? That mean I have to go out and buy Windows Vista 64-bit just because Microsoft blows?

No you contact Micorsoft for a copy of Vista 64 bit (for free). Not being nasty -- they will send you a copy of Vista 64 bit for a nominal fee if you can prove you have a legitimate copy of Vista 32.

What exactly is happening when you try and run the game...

Are you running it from the HOI2.exe file in the Doomsday folder?

The C://Games directory was going to be my next approach.

I'm not sure myself what the actual problem details are, other than the mods work, but Vanilla doesn't.

Oh well.
Thanks for the backup on this Corey.
I was losing my mind.

Working

ok I got it working now I think, several boot ups and can play now, I changed the name of the AVI to AVI Back, just out of curiosity why did this prevent me from playing?

Thnx for the help by the way.

Video driver is probably beltching on the AVI file....

Glad to hear that it works....

And btw ... more info for you on the RAM issue...

Vista 32 bit is not seeing all of that lovely 4 GIG Ram you have ... just type in Taskmgr in the Run command from the start menu... click on the Performance tab -- you will see that all the ram is not being recognized....

I was having the same problem and this fixed it for me as well. Thanks for the tip. :)

Hi, just wanted to help narrow down the bug.

I had pretty much the same problem: I can start Hoi, but it crashed as soon as i tried to start a game. It used to work just fine, but somehow it stopped working (the only changes on my system are a few Windows Updates)

My system setup is also very similar to what OP described. Vista, etc.

I tried uninstalling and reinstalling to misc places on my PC. I used to have it on a separate external harddrive, so i installed it in c:/games/ instead. Still not working.

What did the trick was simply renaming the AVI folder.

Oh, and i've always ran armageddon in WinXP SP2 compatibility mode. I have UAC turned off on this machine, so i guess that is a hint that the crash is not UAC related.

Just thought i'd share my experience.

Renaming the AVI folder fixed my issue as well.

Thanks a bunch for posting this up to begin with. This issue has kept me from playing HOI2 since updating to Vista 64. Bink must be erroring out when the scenario loads. Renaming the folder keeps the initial movie from playing and bink from loading. XP SP 2 Compatibility mode doesn't mitigate the error. Only solution is to rename the AVI folder to keep bink out of the load.
