I'm afraid that since CORE (and I believe most other major mods) does not support the original HoI2 anymore that I won't be able to give you a good answer. My only recommendation is to actually get Doomsday - the jury is still out regarding Armageddon, but Doomsday is actually a lot better than the original.
 
Doomsday cover both, and it give you more options (spies, for exemples). The 'Doomsday' campain is more a bonus, and the cold war events are there to improve the 'post war period'. Having Doomsday will give you the opportunity of playing with mods of hight historical accuracy. Give it a try.
 
Doomsday is actually the regular HoI2 with an extended timeline (up to 1953) and some extra features, like the spying section. Apart from that the game mechanics were improved (AI and such), plus some additional scenarios were added. The grand campaign still starts in 1936 though... :)

All the major mods have moved from the regular Vanilla to the Doomsday variant AFAIK, and that alone should be a major reason to focus on DD instead of the original HoI2.

Ask this question in the General Discussion forum, what answer do you expect asking it here? It is like going to a Mercedes Benz car seller and asking him what car you should buy, Mercedes, BMW or Mazda. :p
