Hello all...quick question

Just wanted to stop in and say hi. On my quest to find an in depth, involved, strategy game, I ran across this. I must say it look very interesting. The question I have is, what are the available countries to start playing as? Call it my German ancestry but are the Germans available to play as? I hope this has not been covered elsewhere. Also any other stratagy games that may be fun would be appreciated. I am currently playing Alpha Centauri but I would like something a little more in this historical timeframe. Heard that Civ 2 is fun. Any answers to these questions are appreciated. Thanks much

Well to answer one question

since the modern state we know as Germany didn't exist in 1492 - no you cannt play as Germany. but you CAN play as one of the many minor German states (i.e Bavaria, Saxony, Brandenburg ect.)

Civ 2 is fun but it's a fantasy game compared to EU. You can play EU as one of several major powers (England, France, Spain, Portugal, Russia, Austria, etc.) or as any one of about 30 different minors (including various German states). Because of the variety of nations available and the many differences in the challenges presented to each, EU has great replay potential.

Hmm.

Civ2 is actually the predecessor of Alpha Centauri. Alpha Centauri is actually Civ3. Sid Meier left Microprose to start Firaxis so he couldn't call his newest civ-style game Civ 3 as Microprose had the rights to that name. So if you go back to play Civ 2 after having played Alpha Cntauri you may find that some aspects of the game are a little dated. However, civ2 is still one of the best games ever designed and that many people, including myself, like to play on earth than in a distant planet.

Imperialism 2 is another great game that covers more or less the same period as EU does. Its no where near as historically accurate as EU is, but its not fantasy either. Gameplay is simpler than EU but its very addictive if you like the style. I think this game is about 2 years old.
