So I somehow walked into a massive war, an almost Hobbes-ian war...

Playing '36 GC, as US. HOI2 Doomsday v1.2, CORE v0.25, Hard/Aggressive settings. Prewar went fine: building up my industry, tech rushing a bit, building up my bases in the Pacific to get ready for the US/Japan war. Europe goes like usual: Anschluss, Munich Agreements both were as normal. Nationalist Spain won the SCW. MR-Pact is the usual outcome, GER steamrolls the Poles, and the eastern half of POL goes to the SU. GER waits out the winter, then during the early spring, attacks Denmark and Norway (annexes Denmark, and is being held up in Norway), and goes West to the Low Countries and France.

France gets beat somewhat slower than i've usually seen, but no problem, vichy fires, and Vichy France is created. Italy had declared war a little bit before that, doesn't get anything out of the Vichy settlement. Germany, Slovakia, Bulgaria, Romania, Italy (all in the Axis) declare on Yugoslavia, along with Hungary (not Axis) DOW Yugoslavia at roughly the same time. This brings us to early spring, 1941.

Back to the Pacific: Over roughly the same period, Japan is getting beat down by Nat. China, who've annexed Menguchko, Menchucgo, Mengencko....whatever, the rump Manchuria state; and pushed Japan to the northern edge of the Korean peninsula. Japan got Indochina from Vichy France, but is in the process of losing it.

Around the end of February, beginning of March, Japan DOWs me. I lose guam pretty quickly (i intentionally didn't defend it), and the Phillipines are getting beat up on and losing. the UK asks me to join their alliance against Germany, and I agree. About 2, 3 weeks after that, this is what happens...

seriously, wtf???? DOWing me, and basically everyone else not named Germany or Japan? right now, the situation is this: I'm in a war with the UK/Commonwealth against Germany and her allies; against Japan (but GER and JAP are not allied); and against the SU and her allies. GER and the SU are not at war (yet? please? pretty please?), but i don't know what else is going to happen...

so....any help, ideas, suggestions? anything?

Thanks

It seem that Iosif and Adolf have finded an agreement ;)

I actually wouldn't be too disconcerted - this can work for you.

The Soviets are going to have a really tough time getting at you, so in direct terms their DoW is largely academic. But what it does do is give you a 'back-up' war to keep your consumer demand down and save you the DoW cost once the Axis have been put to bed. I'd be working on stripping down the Japanese fleet as systematically as I could. Once that's gone Japan is meat on the table for the US, and you can put it on hold while you ensure that things don't get out of hand in Europe. It will stand as a nice buffer between you and the Soviets until you decide to take it out, and that gives you an important strategic initiative.

Probably that beligerence issue rearing it's ugly head again - as beligerence in DD is way higher than in the old HoI2 this causes side-effects - i.e. a lot more DOWing than usual. If you revert to an earlier save does it happen again?

I went back to the "autosave" saved game about 5 times to see what would happen. The DOW came on the 2nd of April, so i don't know if going to the "autosave" was a good idea, as the save was right before the DOW. That being said, every time i loaded up the "autosave", the SU declared war on me (actually, one time was a DOW on France, which at that point had a couple provinces in central africa....). As i'm at work right now, i'm not sure if i can use the "old autosave" saved game; i can't remember how far along i played after the Soviets DOW'd me and if i wiped out one of the autosaves...

So far, everyone's advice seems to be that i should go after Japan first, which shouldn't be too hard, as they've been kicked out of mainland China, and are slowly losing Indochina. If i go for the Korean peninsula, i'd get a land border (albeit, a one province wide, mountainous province) with the SU, right at Vladivostok. Would it be worthwhile to take the Korean Peninsula, even if it gets me a land border with the SU, and maybe liberate South Korea (or just Korea with the S. Korean flag :) )??

I should double check the alliances, to see if there are any weak-link Axis minors i can go after.....

Thanks all for your advice!

You could try that old autosave to be sure. But whatever the case this DOW issue is our #1 thing to fix. Though it must be said that it might be related to in-game actions and events as well - not every DOW is due to the bug in it's own right...

Hey...we all bought this game to change history didn't we? :D
Pfeh... CORE at least covers the ahistorical, plausible options as well as the historical. At a price, of course. But if you want to change history then CORE is your game. If you 'just' want to recreate it... well the AI at times goes ahistorical too in CORE. ;)

I also had the SU declare war on the Axis just a month before Germany and the Axis delcared war on the SU(there seems to be a quite high chance(c.50% chance?) of this happening as it happened quite frequently when I reloaded earlier savegames. Typically the SU and the Commonwealth rarely come to blows, until after Germany and Japan are conquered. Nothing happened at all between the Allies and the Communists when I played as an Axis-aligned Turkey, and in my current game as Germany, the only interaction was between a tiny handful of UK forces conquering parts of eastern Persia and one neighbouring Soviet province, which were subsequently destroyed by my German forces.

I tried the old autosave, about a month (March 1) before the DOW, and the SU declared war every time the first day or two of April came around. i ran it three times, and got DOW'd twice, and France once...

and it gets better...i played my game some last night: Germany somehow convinced Nat. Spain to join the Axis. In case anyone needs a scorecard, the only continental european countries i'm not at war with are: Turkey; Switzerland; Vichy France; Portugal; Sweden; and Finland. Greece is being beat down by Germany and her balkan allies; Italy is being pushed out of Libya (and is completely out of the former Ethiopia)

fun times!

Things get even more interesting come spring and summer...

  • 3:00 April 23, 1941 : Japan entered a Military Alliance with Germany, Slovakia, Italy, Romania, Bulgaria, Hungary, Nationalist Spain and Croatia.

3:00 May 7, 1941 : Portugal entered a Military Alliance with Germany, Slovakia, Italy, Romania, Bulgaria, Hungary, Nationalist Spain, Croatia and Japan.

3:00 July 1, 1941 : Germany declared war upon Soviet Union.

Looks like the long awaited Nazi-Soviet War has come to pass.

I've included a snapshot of the Eastern Front, about two months after the DOW:

As for my "private war" in the Pacific, i've cleaned out the Central Pacific island chains, and am moving to clear the Philippines; after that, i'll take Formosa and the two VP locations in Indochina (Hanoi and Saigon??). Then the Home Islands, then Korea, if the SU hasn't taken them by the fall of Tokyo.

ever given it a thought to write an AAR? :D are there any AAR out there with Core by the way!?!!?!?!!
