I just got COTN and have tried installing EU II but it keeps restarting my computer instead of going into the game  . I think it may be my video card because I just bought it last week. Hearts of Iron also use to run before installing this video card but now they also restart the computer when I try playing.

The video card is MAD CONQUERER FX52000 AG from MAD DOG MULTIMEDIA INC. I have the latest direct x and I tried installing the latest EU II patch. I also tried renaming the AVI subfolder and now it just crashes right away without showing the videos. I've been waiting for two months to finally get this game so please help if you have any pointers thanks :(

Also: I have Windows Xp and an HP Pavilion.

Okay let's try some standard things.
1) Rename the AVI folder to AVI_back
2) Set the color depth to 16BIT
3) Turn off everything in the background like E-mail/ICQ/Messenger, Virus protection and everything in the system tray beside the clock

I know you have done 1 already try it in combination with 2 and 3.

Thanks

Great thanks :)

I think it was #2. I was thinking about changing from 32 to 16 and trying that but I didn't think it would be the main reason  , I started realizing something was really wrong when almost all of my games started doing the same thing EU II and HOI did. I don't understand why it didn't work on 32 though... that shouldn't change the performance much should it

Thanks again! :)

Games is optimized for 16 BIT, which is also more standardized than 32.

Odd

Bad news... for some reason it has gone back to restarting the computer each time I try loading a game. :( It worked all day until just recently. It is now at 16bit but is still messing up... very odd. If you have any other pointers i'd appreciate it thanks. By the way it isn't just EU II but every game it seems...

I thought it might not be an EU2 related problem.
Is your chip overheating?

If not the video chip overheating I would suspect it is causing the CPU to overheat or possibly overloading the power supply. Do you have a temperature/system monitoring applet? The system manufacturer may have pre-installed one or you may be able to download one.

It was CPU temp I was talking about, Usually you can see this in the Bios setup.

I'll try to check but how exactly do I get to the BIOs setup? Through the Control Panel right? It doesn't have a temperature monitoring applet that I know of but I could see if I could get one downloaded.

I also ran a directx diagnostic, if it helps:

BIOS setup (aka CMOS setup) is normally accessed when you start the computer before Windows starts to load. Usually there's a message like "<F2> setup" or "Ctrl-S to enter Setup" or something similar. Some major manufacturers (like Dell and possibly HP) ship configured to hide that message but it should still be possible to enter Setup by pressing the right key(s). F1 and Del are some other common ones used.

Ok, I was able to get there (I guess it was F1 on startup). Now how do I find the information you guys want? By the way I changed a setting in the menu for the Default Adapter from PCI to AGP because the graphics card is an AGP was that alright?

Hard to give exact directions because every BIOS Setup is a little different. Assuming HP hasn't hidden them there should be some menu item that lets you monitor the sensors built into the motherboard and CPU. I would just look into all the options and make sure you don't tell it to save settings if you accidently change something.

I think I found out the problem

I began testing different problems and began thinking that it may have been the power supply not being enough to support the card. Then I decided to start the game then exit the game window to see how the desktop was reacting while the game was going... hoping to see if maybe a message came up or something for me to realize why it was restarting. Then suddenly Zone Alarm flashed up an alert about blocking the game then suddenly the computer restarted.

Then I realized I had installed a trial version around the same time these problems occured (I usually just use the free zone alarm version). So I guess it was because of the firewall :p wierd... Anyway everything is working fine now. I guess that time a few days ago when I replied saying everything was working again it must have been because for some reason Zone Alarm happened to be off during those times. :) Thanks for your help!

I think i'll be playing EU II alot today ;)

Seems odd that ZoneAlarm would reboot your system though. Is that some kind of configuration option or a bug?

Yeah...

Zone Alarm hasn't done anything like this before. I've used Zone Alarm for a couple of years now with no problem. I guess it is part of the configuration since when I grant privledges to the games through the "programs" list in ZA it allows them to play with no reboot. I'm guessing it doesn't intentionally restart the computer though but simply is trying to stop the game so there might be some technical issues going on.

I used to use ZA until I discovered I couldn't play EU2 MP at all (IIRC 1.06). Disabling it was not enough, I had to actually uninstall it to get MP to work again. ZA does something pretty fundamental just by being installed. I use the FW on my router now :)

Hmm!

Castellon whistles and points to Item 3 in his first post that you said you had tried. :)

oops sorry  , well I did actually do that and the games worked ;) but I thought the reason was because of number 2 (the 16-bit issue) so I guess after that I sortof forgot to turn off everything. Thanks for your help and it was very good advice :p

That is what makes diagnoses over the internet hard. :)
Glad everything worked out, and that you can play, that is the important thing!
