I tried to setup to play an MP the other day and hit a brick wall.

I killed everything running on my computer except the ones TaskManager wont let you kill. Logged onto the net and loaded up CK.

After about 5 seconds, the CK screen minimized and as far as I can tell, stopped altogether. I tried maximizing it and got a brief flash of a black screen, then it minimized again. Lather, rinse and repeat this excitement about 5 times.

I have 2.3g Celeron machine with 512m RAM, and, sigh, a dialup connection, altho at this point the connection didnt enter into it.

I think it's probably an insufficient RAM problem, but before I upgrade, I'd like some feedback if anyone else had the same problem and found a solution.

I get the same problem if I try to open CK without closing all the other running programs. It also happens with EU, in all the same circumstances.

Any thoughts or help?

Thanks

Hmm... Have you done the basic stuff? Ie:

-Rename AVI folder (in the CK folder) to AVI_back

-Defrag hard-disk

Yeah, all the basics.... the game itself is fine, runs no problem normally (as long as it has no 'competition' while running... it's very jealous! ;) )... the only prob is when I try to run it and access the net.

Lack of RAM will not prevent you from playing MP, it will just make you s-l-o-w. Though your comp is well in the good range as comps go for CK.

It sounds like a firewall to me.

That was my first thought too, Byak, but the problem isnt connecting. It's getting the game to run in a configuration that allows me to go online. if I open the internet connection before running CK, the game does its minimize and 'go to black' thing. I'm going to try opening the game and then connecting to the net and see if that works, but I'm not hopeful :)

Yes, well, I've never played any Paradox game with dial-up so I'm not an expert on that. That minimization just sounded like a firewall preventing it from going futher. I've played MP with 600 MHz / 192 RAM machine, so it surely isn't too low specs to play MP. :D

Yeah, the RAM thing didnt make a lot of sense to me either, but given the circumstances, it sounded like the most logical solution, since all the other parameters shouldnt be causing the problem. I fear I may just have to wipe the HD, format and rebuild this pig and see if it'll run then (my GOD! I'll lose all my porn!) Anyway, I'll check back in after I try the 'open CK then connect' trick.

This is almost like being in 'chat', Byak... thanks for the quick replies :)

EDIT: When I said I had everything turned off except CK, I include the firewall in that..... it's DOA when I run... if it's affecting anything, it's running without Windows (at least Task Manager) knowing it's there....

Okay... the open CK and then connect to the internet procedure seems to work okay.... I was able to get into V-net with no problem..... it even worked (with some effort) after disconnecting and reconnecting...... YAY
