I have had numerous problems with HOI but thankfully most have been fixed by the various patches. However, their is one problem that persists. While playing various campaigns when I try to select a new commander the game locks up, this doesn't always happen but as you can imagine it becomes very annoying. Any help would be appreciated.

More of a support forum problem most likely. Is the 'lockup' is only temporary or do you have to kill the game from the task manager? What is your CPU/RAM/OS what HoI patch are you running?

Okay let's try some standard things.
1) Rename the AVI folder to AVI_back
2) Set the color depth to 16BIT
3) Turn off everything in the background like E-mail/ICQ/Messenger, Virus protection and everything in the system tray beside the clock.

Please also tell me what your system specs are.

Thank you all for the replies.

1) Not to sure what you mean?

2) I have tried this and it still happens

3) I have also tried this.

Windows XP pro (It used to happen when Windows ME was installed)
Athlon 2600
512DDR RAM
Radeon 9000 128mb

Game patched to 1.06

"Is the 'lockup' is only temporary or do you have to kill the game from the task manager? What is your CPU/RAM/OS what HoI patch are you running?"

The PC freezes, I'm unable to call up the task manager.

I have had occasions where it doesn't happen and others where I'm able to make several different changes before it crashes.

Regards

Will

What motherboard type do you have?

Do exp. freezes with other titles?

Could be memory, have you tried taking out one of you memory chips (if you know what you are doing!) and trying?

1) He means rename the folder called avi, which is located under the game install directory. someting like C:\Program Files\Paradox Entertainment\Hearts of Iron or wherever you decided to install. Use the Windows explorer to find it and rename it, so that the intro movie WONT play.

Oh yes. Dont forget the make and model of the PC and its components;)

Calling jpd! :) Given that he has an Athlon he probably has a Via chipset. I'd suspect the infamous AGP loop. Renaming avi might be enough if he's lucky.

Hi

No I don't get the freeze with other titles. I assume you meen remove the Ram, it is all on one stick and I'm resonable sure that it is fitted correctly.

I will rename that file. Does this have a history of causing problems?

My PC is basically home built, here are the details of the main components.

AMD ATHLON XP2600+ 333MHZ FSB 256Cache - Thoroughbred CPU

MSI K7N2 Delta-L SKT A 8xAGP DDR400 Nforce2 6ch Sound LAN USB 2.0 Motherboard

Crucial 512 DDR333 PC2700 DIMM

Sapphire ATI Radeon 9200SE 128MB DDR 8x AGP

Yes, some people's systems don't seem to like the player that is used to play the intro video, especially on WinXP. It can cause problems even after the video has played so we rename the avi folder so the player doesn't load.

Assuming you have tried everything I have suggested and are still having troubles then:

Please run a DirectX Diagnostic:
Start menu –Run - then type Dxdiag, then select each tab across the top of the window, and run the tests on each tab. Then select “Save All Information” button in the lower right of the window. This will bring up a dialog box to allow you to select a name for the file where the information will be saved. You can save it right on the desktop as this will make it easy to find. Then copy the contents of that file from the start to the heading that says “DirectX components” then paste what you have copied into a post in this thread.

Hear is what you asked for.

Well the good news is you do not have the VIA chip set so do not have those problems.

Your video card driver is out of date, try updating that July 7, 2004 is the current one.

Other than that I know people have also removed some leaders they never use such as the numerous low stat generals, You have enough memory so I do not get why you are having this problem though.
