Help with Swedish Vassals

I'm just about to embark on my very first GC, playing as Denmark.

My general strategy is to establish a solid Baltic Base before hopefully establish numerous profitable colonies across the globe.

At the outset Denmark starts out with Sweden as a vassal, but with relations of -200 and Sweden having a permanent CB against me. Ideally I'd like to convince the Swedish brother-people that a Danish led Nordic union is in the best interest of all parties concerned. My question is... how do I do that?

Do I just keep throwing gifts and royal marriages at them hoping to improve my relations so that I can diplomatically annex them? Or will the permanent CB prevent this noble plan from succeeding?

Please advise.

Yes.
As soon as you get to -150 rel, you can (probably) make a Royal marriage too, for a free +15 increase.
 
Only Sweden is much larger/stronger etc then Denmark. The question is: do they even want to be annexed by such a small and powerless country?
 
Well... in the end they accepted being annexed by my small and powerless country. However... they have this pesky nationalism rating going, so they keep revolting.

It really is rather annoying especially as the sieges I engage in never seem to succeed in Sweden.

I've been besieging these three cities for many years now. The interface tells me that the city will probably fall in six months, but it said that three years ago as well. I can't say I'm happy about it. I'm I missing something or do sieges normally last for many years?
 
Have you tried storming the defenders? You'll need a certain technology level do recieve this option and once you storm them it'll be a bloody battle - you might loose a lot of soldiers - but it's generally faster than a siege.

BiB, how does Sweden and Denmark ally agains the Russians?
When I played as Sweden I had big problems with breaking up the Danish-Russian alliance. How do you manage that?

Is it at all possible for an outside nation to influence the alliance between two parties?

Indeed it is hard to break up that union from hell. It is even easier to become best friends with Portugal and Hungary. One possible scenario is to take one province after another but then your BB rating will be high as a crack (or an EU) addict.
Recently (last night's game), after listening to the veterans in this forum, I first attacked Denmark, took Gotland and Skane. Then I started courting them with gifts royal marriages etc. I expect that I after 30-40 years will be buddies with my fellow Scandinavians. Then, I will take Kurland and Ingermanland...and then...AND THEN...RUSSIA here I come!! (fanatic eyes=)

Denmark is there to be annexed, as all _true_ Swedish players know. I mean we already had a nice working scandinavian union, the only problem to be remedied is that the Danish was the leaders! *grin*
 
Nahh.. I just militarily annexed Denmark. I let the Hansa have Jutland. (Does Iceland ever stop revolting??)
I have laso diplo annexed the teutonics (who had Pskov) and I am sitting with approx,
100,000 men Gustavus Adolfus, Vasa in Livonia and an Austrian Alliance(Austria has by 1630 D. Annexed
Hungary,Mold, Vallachia, conquered Bohemia (read Austria of Maria Teresia).
(I love diplomatic revolutions!!) I am torm between gutting Russia or trying (w/ AS) to try to level
Poland who right now has annexed to date Tula, Crimea, Bogudjar,Bogoraz, Prussia,Kurland and Pomerania
(she is BIG!!)
I can just see Gustuavus leading the noble Swedes on to glorious camapign to Warsaw
and truly making Sweden Mistress of the North!!

Now if I can just butter up the Emperor....

First Denmark nearly always allies with Russia, who start of on their roll oevr of the Khanates. Denmark nevergets anything while Russia seriusly enlarges. This pisses Denmark off and if Russia goes quick by the last war Denamrk will drop out and then what is easier than allying with ur by then quite buttered up vassal, who by then are most likely alrdeay more than 10 years ur vassal ?

Make sure you have more besiegers than there are defenders inside the fort. High attrition provinces often leave beseiging armies smaller than required to siege.

One quick visual technique to know if you have enough troops to actually besiege the province, rather than just pretend, is to see if the game shows a cannon icon with your troops in the besieged province. If the cannon doesn't show, you have fallen under the required troop minimums to maintain the siege. What is confusing to beginners is that when you click on the province, it will still show the siege battle resolution screen, so you THINK you are besieging, but you will be making no progress.

I also suggest having a large multiple of the fortress strength in artillery at the siege. This speeds things up immensely, as having no cannon gives a minus to your siege efforts. Having 2x the fortress level (so 20 for minimal, 40 for small) gives a nice plus, while having 3x (so 30 for minimal, 60 for small) gives an even bigger bonus. Lots of cannon is always good for knocking down fortress walls. But of course watch for attrition - especially in winter. :) But you already know that if you are playing as Denmark.
 
Thanks for the answers. As I newbie I was caught by the classic attrition-brings-troop-level-too-low-to-continue-siege-but-it-still-looks-like-you're-besieging ploy. I will do better next time, oh yes I will.

Seeing as this forum has definite pro-Sweden bias I also, in the interest of Scandinavian unity, promise not to order any wholesale executions of Swedish nobility.
