I have been having trouble with game ever since I got to the last campaign mission in the year 1700. Let me tell you alittle about my status. I have 9 fleets. Fleet 1, 140 tons of space. Fleet 2, 100 tons. Fleet 3, 320 tons, fleet 4, 0 tons (War fleet), Fleet 5, 480 tons. Fleet 6, 500 tons. Fleet 7, 200 Tons. Fleet 8, 1,000 Tons. Fleet 9, 0 tons (War Fleet). Fleets 3,6, and 8 are on the spice trade. Fleet 1,2,5, and 7 are on the tea trade. By the time 5/1700 I need to import 9,570 tons of spice and 15,000 tons of tea. I keep loosing this level so I saved the game at the year 1700 so if I loose again I can go back to exacly there. Do you have any tips I can use? If you need more information just ask and I will gladly post it. Thanks so much in advanced.

P.S. I am thinking of writing a strategic guide for beginners. If anyone likes this idea, post it at the end of your answer to my original question. Thanks again!

Bigger ships and top-level Trade Posts. Also two ports per MTI and East Indiamen on each MTI route instead of those tiny ships of yours.

I work with 1x Frigate + 4x East Indiamen and Organizer captains for multiple Trade Post level 4 ports. It's pretty easy to complete those missions with such a setup.

Demolish Forts and Shipyards rebuilding them only to level 1. Give up all ports in Africa signing Pacts instead. Preferably sell each of them for a million pounds to different AI companies. Don't trade Gold and Diamonds heavily for a while since they eat up lots of "operational" cash.

Even on Hard I was 25 million ahead of 2nd AI company by 1700.

How many ports do you own and what buildings are in them?

I own 5 ports, all ports have level one everything accept 2. 1 of the 2 has level 4 garrison and level 4 fort, the other has eather level 4 garisson and level 4 fort or level 3 garisson level 3 fort

What about Trade Post levels? What are skills of your captains (Salesman, Organizer, Haggler...)?

Also, I think you are simply using too small fleets for the job.

I am going to try to use my fleet of 5 East Indianman with the flag ship full of marines. And they demolish my forts and Garissons. And build better trading post. Then make a fleet of 5 more east indianman and make one full of marines. The other fleets will be spares that just to trading to make profit.

Maybe I'll just tell you what I do to make it easier. I play on Hard/Simulation for a while now and don't feel like going down to Normal ever again. I start pirating AIs in 1607 and am almost always at war with at least one of them since that's what Hard requires to keep up with them due to their huge price advantage.

I usually own:

- 2x Spices ports
- 2x Tea ports
- 2x Silk ports
- 1x Porcelain, 1x Coffee, 1x Ex. Furs (Mozambique, my pirate-hunting base) and if I have cash to waste also ports with Ivory, Diamonds and Gold
- I don't let any AI own more than one port in India. Two only if it's a very weak AI I want to resurrect.

I have a Pact signed with all AIs I'm not at war with, usually costs 100k to bribe them into it until my company power is 2x theirs. Then they give it for free.

After 1660s are over all my fleets look like this:

1x Frigate + 4x East Indiamen - per each port selling Spices, Tea and Silk (5 or 6 fleets)
1x Frigate + 4x Brig - per each Porcelain, Coffee, Exotic Furs and Ivory port (this last one earns the most cash on exports and generic goods). 3-4 fleets usually.
1x Brig + 2x Xebecs - my "fun" fleet that I use for boarding, pirating, making gold/diamonds runs when I stockpile enough of them, running errands and similar stuff.
2 fleets of 4x Frigate for Pirate hunting and generally ruling the seas. Usually patrolling around Madagascar and Arabia. Moved to Cape Town when in war. With Marines since they take most crew damage and save me from losing experience.
1 fleet of 5x Galleon (SOL46 in 1670s, SOL90 after 1700s) to take cities. If it's a tough city, I send a sucide fleet of Flutes full of Marines first, then steamroll them with SOLs. They are stationed in Mozambique so they can reach India fast in case I need to take a port there. Also full of marines.

Each port I own has:

- Level 4 Trade Post (my priority!)
- Level 1 Shipyard (to repair ships)
- Level 1 Warehouse (always there)
- Level 1 Fort
- Level 4 Garrison

(I retake them if I lose one rather than waste cash on unncessary defences)

Each my convoy (Brig and East Indiamen fleets) captain has at least:

- Navigator (+20% speed)
- Salesman (+5% selling price)
- Haggler (-5% buying price)
- Organizer (20% more cargo space)

Each my combat (Frigates, SOLs and "fun" fleet) captain has at least:

- Navigator (+20% speed)
- Unsinkable (-20% damage)
- Feared (-20% enemy morale)
- Rout (-25 points enemy morale, makes enemy fleet surrender if I have Feared and sink their flagship)
- Fix sails (10% sails fixed on flagship)
- Fix hull (10% hull fixed on flagship)

(it's many but they level up fast on pirates)

My SOL fleet captain is also:

- Conqueror (+20% to force count when taking ports)
- Organizer (20% more space to load more marines onto ships)
(total 44% bonus to Marine force compared to normal captains!)

Prior to East Indiamen era I usually use fleets of Xebecs + Schooners for low price stuff and Galleons + Flutes for costly stuff since those mix very well on tactical level (I fight A LOT). I don't add Frigates to my convoys until they have max experience in combat. If I'm in a tight spot (Spices convoy sunk kind of a tight spot) I take a city and sell it to AI for cash.

In general after I finish the migration to East Indiamen my account quickly goes up to around 30 000 000 area and stays like that for a while since I start spending more cash on ports.

But you dont understand. It is 1700 and i have about 600,000. Tere isnt much you can do with that. If I had atleast about 1,500,000... I could build the fleets I need. I neeed to get that as I only have 50 years to import only so much tons of spice and tea with small fleets! I will get rid of any fleets, and ports of luxery (ports I do not really need) to just reach the campaign mission goal.

Wow. You have 600 000 pounds? How can you even operate with such cash? Each of my fleets needs over a million of cash each time it purchases stuff in India...

I'd be running with empty cargo bays if I didn't have at least 6-8 million all the time on my account... My rule is to always stay over 10 million and I usually have 10-15 saved up in Gold and Diamonds.

Well, maybe it's time to restart. :)

I have an idea though to try first. Load your warehouses in India with MTIs. They shouldn't cost much since due to your tiny fleets they must be at 1800t of supply at every time. So buy those when they are at 1800t, unload at home to warehouse and sell to AI for hard cash, especially AIs who have no access to that good. Then use this cash to upgrade your convoys, maybe Flutes for starters, they aren't that much smaller than East Indiamen but are much cheaper.

It won't make you a billionaire, this selling to AI but it should land you at least at around 2 million so you can start rolling. Also try selling a port if you can to whoever wants it for at least a million.

That is a good Idea, but in the amount of time I have "50 years" in my opinion that wont work. There has to be another way without restarting. One day I was playing and there were these missions saying if you conquer a new port we will pay you 1,600,000 and then the next day after I finished them, they werre gone. If I had those again, I would be on a roll.

A good mission may come or may not come, it's tricky.

Maybe break a few Pacts and try to sell renewals to AI? Could net a few hundred thousand.

Maybe stop your other fleets and focus the big ones on Spices and Tea so you quickly raise a million or two and can start building bigger ships? As soon as bigger ships come into play your balance sheets will start looking like it's 18th century...

I totaly udnerstand that. But its just this. I need to make more money and I have fleets going back and forth out there. I am thinking If I buy as much spice possible even if there is only 15 pounds left in my account, sell it in england my account will go from 600,000 to 15 to 1,000,000 i think.

Well, try what we figured out so far and let's see how it works out. If it's not enough, we will come up with something more harsh, like for example demolishing all buildings you can demolish or selling all fleets that don't have 100t cargo bay kind of ships to immediately cut costs and raise some cash to invest.

You could also post your save game so other folks can try their skills on your game. :)

Okay, 2 questions tho.
1. Should I try my Idea?
2. When you finish the grand campaign, on the main menu is there a check or somthing saying its finsihed?

1. Sure.
2. Don't know. I always restarted before end. Building a new empire is much more fun than governing one already built.

Okay, I am going to go try my idea right now. Ill post a reply to this post to tell you my status when I exit the game and you can tell me if I am on the right path.
