Marines are cool, they can decimate enemy's crew when you're chasing him at close range. I keep them at least on the flagship in case of a long chase or a boarding operation.
The war fleet is full of marines. I say 0 tons becuase its 0 tons of cargo you can fit. I do not generaly consider marines "cargo". They always have marines so whenever the fleet is needed in war, I do not have to go to port and fill them with marines. Its good to have marines, they help the ships crew in battle.
I Always have a war fleet. My first war fleet was a fleet of 5 Frigates full of marines. My second war fleet was a fleet of 5 SOLT 46 guns full of marines. I find cutters so pointless in war. Cutters should be use on trading routs.

Same here except my first fleet is 5 Galleons. When they take a port I retire them to trading with that port, and build up another Galleon fleet to repeat the procedure. But I basically tread water waiting for Frigates. From Frigates up I try to lesson the damage of pirates and other companies at war. I dont even know what to do with the littlies. Sometimes I find them, or win them in a battle, then I try and find a short (African or island) trade route because I hate selling them for a very unrealistically and ridiculously low price.
