i was installing hoi 1 and an error came up saying:

Install

An I/O error occured while installing a file. This is normally caused by bad installation media or a corrupt installation file.

what should i do?

Did you clean the CD and try it again?
Did you try copying the entire CD to HD and installing from there?

how do you copy it to hd? i never heard of that.

Copy the contents of the CD to a folder on your hard drive and run the install executable from the folder on your hard drive.
