Still no luck on the matter of Al-Djazair. Maybe you have to take it in a war, and that's not an easy task when it's Spain who guards it. The situation in the south is most interesting. Getting Gao should bring wealth to Fez. Hope it's worth the reputation hit though.

Sorry for the late reply - I'm still in lurking mode for the summer.

Wow, two replies in one day! That works to an average of one reply every fifteen days.

September 9th, 1542. Unfortunately, our army in Timbuktu be too small to begin a siege of Gao. 10,000 cavalry have been commissioned at a cost of 170 ducats to rectify the matter. Mali have requested military access. Since the only thing Mali can do with that be to kill Morocco, I have advised my lord Ahmad to consent to this request.

May 5th, 1543. Fez won an important battle in Morocco, but Songhai be doomed...by Mali. They refused a white peace. Fez's hands be tied by their tremendous arrogance. Our only hope be to settle with them after their province has been taken, but before Mali annexes them behind our backs.

8161217-a1c.jpg

King Ahmad hath dispatched royal representatives to the siege of Gao, because the court feels that Songhai will come to its senses when faced with the prospect of becoming Malinese.

May 17th, 1543. There was a merchant riot in the Sahara. What can one do?

June 1st, 1543. Gao fell to Mali. Songhai was nice enough to pay 100 ducats to the alliance, and since that alliance no longer includes Benin, that means 50 ducats to beat Morocco to a pulp!

8161218-77f.jpg

Of course, we do not want military access so that in future conflicts we may in fact conquer the Songhai.

August 8th, 1543. We won an other important battle in Morocco. They now have no army, no future, no hope. Hail Fez!

June 4th, 1544. We have captured Toubkal. Morocco offers us 52 ducats.

8161219-27e.jpg

June 5th, 1544. We annexed Morocco. We now have a worthless trading post in "Sarawak," and a potentially useful trading post in "Malindi," near Somaliland. Hail Fez!

8161220-b7a.jpg

Most of King Ahmad's dreams go along these lines.
November 8th, 1545. The "war" with The Kaliphate was concluded with a white peace, who had been allied to Songhai and Morocco. There be no wonder why The Kaliphate splintered.

January 1st, 1546. The new taxes are 83 ducats. Surely, Fez shalt be rich in a few years.

March 26th, 1547. The Kingdom of Fez hath established the colony of Mdennan, and it shalt eventually grow into a revenue producing province. The cost was about 86 ducats. Doesn't it look like a nice, cozy...Islamic place to live?

8161221-6a1.jpg

January 30th, 1549. I poisoned my lord Ahmad at breakfast. Now my new lord Muhammaed shalt rule! This fellow be wise in the ways of speech, and shalt bring great glory to the reputation of Fez. Sultan Muhammaed makes the legendary Sultan Muhammad look confused! Let all Fez rejoice, for Ahmad the average be dead.

September 6th, 1549. By royal order, Muhammaed has proclaimed that Fez can not afford to rule both land and sea, and so we will pick the land. Henceforth, the ducats previously allotted towards oceanic improvements shalt be given unto foreign trade development. We might as well adjust domestic settings towards land as well, when we are given the chance.

8161240-6f0.jpg

Healthy, robust Fez.

Great AAR! Recently stumbled upon it and I like it!! Glad that you could get rid of Ahmad the Average..Hopefully Fez will prosper under Muhammaed I!!

Beleg32 - Hmm, well, I can't say as such, but Spain is very hard to fight...leaving our other unfortunate neighbours :p

Olav - Aye, hail Fez! We're not really sure what to do with the colony. We lack the naval skills to reach the area, so whether we can even keep the colony is an open question.

Teodor - Hurrah for Muhammaed!

- - -

August 2nd, 1552. By royal order, Sultan Muhammaed hath outlawed any flying of the flag of Morocco, and in so doing hath maximised centralisation. Hail Fez.

October 19th, 1553. Those ingrates in Mdennan are revolting! To the gallows with those infidels!

8199580-b6d.jpg

January 9th, 1557. Currently, we are plotting an invasion of Mali to acquire their gold mining provinces. In the process, we found that the numbers have added excellently. Hail Fez!

8199581-bcf.jpg

July 24th, 1557. Fez has declared war on the wicked negroes of Mali, who hath deprived Fez of its rightful share of gold through trickery. Now, we ride our camels south to punish these deviant former allies. The two provinces under siege are gold producers. There also be 10,000 men to distract Mali and speed the process of conquering this land. Mali be doing terrible.

8199582-1ad.jpg

October 24th, 1557.

My lord Muhammaed hath abdictated, stating that he wishes to spend the rest of his days tending his orange grove. He hath appointed 'Abd Allah as his successor. All hail Sultan 'Abd Allah "the administrator!"

8199583-1d6.jpg

December 1st, 1559. A guild of merchants in Say hath given unto the kingdom of Fez 200 ducats to fund our capture of Bure! (These events are really on my side at the moment) We now control Bure, Bambuk, and Segu. Mali's attack on Say failed, although they did repel our army a couple of times. The jungle also be very difficult terrain.

8199584-ab7.jpg

Another new monarch!! They just keep getting better! Hail Abd Allah!!! Lets just hope that he master the art of "camel jungle fighting" (I wonder if Sun Tzu ever wrote about the subject) so that you can get what is rightfully yours from the treacherous Mali!!

This is one great AAR! Just as I like it.
Not too much text, a lot of pictures, some humour and above all: a challenging game. You've come quite far from such a poor starting position.

I know reply's must encourage you to write and so I'll see you within a few months. If I don't forget...

squigian: The wicked Iberians have been rather cooperative. As long as we do not trespass in their enclaves, they leave us alone. Eventually, though, we may be forced to intervene.

January 1st, 1560. 'Abd Allah has promoted me to "Duke of Tangiers." Praise be to Allah, the other one, and his messenger Mahomet.

8272628-908.jpg

August 10th, 1562. The war be over - Fez controls every province Mali claims. To this point, Mali has offered only Bure and ducats, but now the real offerings must begin.

8272630-0b3.jpg

August 28th, 1562. Benin has given us a diplomatic insult, making war with them a completely palatable prospect to the people. It's war!

December 15, 1562. The war with Benin just beginning. Brunei has randomly offered Fez an alliance, which I feel we ought to accept, since we have to protect ourselves. Fez technically shares a border with Brunei, although no one in Fez claims to have ever been there...

15321395-12d.jpg

December 18th, 1562. Nubia has converted to the Sunni faith. Praise be to Mahomet, prophet of Allah. Also, here be an unfortunate battle in which the camels were not fed enough grass before battle, roughly 50% as much as they needed. This be the first battle with Benin.

15321410-7c2.jpg

September 29th, 1563. Gift to the state of 225d. We need it too, to build fresh cavalry.

June 9th, 1565. The war was going badly and war exhaustion was diverting over half of our military effort, so Fez received a small refund of 100d. from Benin, and settled with Mali for every province they owned east of their capitol. I advised our lord 'Abd Allah that caring for the other two provinces might be more trouble than they are worth in access and harm done to the world reputation of Fez. Mali also paid for most of those new tax collectors!

Reputation: I can't say exactly, because I didn't save around this period, but I think it's around 10-15 (tarnished).

- - -

January 1st, 1567. The tax collected this year amounted to 113 ducats.

August 25, 1567. Felicitous tidings! We have successfully settled Malindi, and now it shalt grow. We now also have port there.

8333194-02d.jpg

July 11th, 1570. The royal ministers were minding their own business, enjoying the latest camel race in Say when suddenly a negro rushed towards us bearing the seal of Benin. Apparently, we are at war again.

I shalt call on Brunei, for some symbolic support.

15321421-d99.jpg

January 23rd, 1574. 'Abd Allah has died in a riding accident. Fez now be ruled by Muhammad II! He be an excellent diplomat.

8333196-698.jpg

Pictured we see the war in Benin. All our ducats went towards building cavalry that were mercilessly slaughtered by the enemy. Benin fights very hard, even in the plains. Nevertheless, we shalt prevail.

July 17th, 1576. Treachery! Muhammad II was kidnapped in the night, and we haven't seen him since.

The Fez council of elders has appointed 'Abd Al-Malik, a popular Imam, to rule Fez. Unfortunately, he be clueless.

15321442-b1c.jpg

November 30th, 1577. Unfortunately, our war with Benin did not go as well as we had desired. We were not able to capture the trading centre of Ivoria, even though the enemy army was distracted by rebels. However, Benin offered Fez the provinces of Begho, Palanas, and Leone as a consolation and twenty five ducats. Perhaps another time great Fez shalt gain a trading centre.

I see the beginning of a great African empire here. I guess your tarnished reputation will give you some more DoWs in the future (hopefully from weak neighbours), so you can expand even further. Lets hope the CoT in Ivoria will be in your hands soon!

I'm also very happy with the frequency of the updates recently. :) Keep them coming!

Wow. Whod've thought I'd miss three "Here Be Fez" updates. Fez has actually grown into something of a regional power. I'd be careful of reputation, as you still probably don't want Spain all over you yet, but you've certainly moved far beyond survival mode. Interesting to see that Fez gets a few good monarchs in there if they manage to hang around to the mid 16th century.

August 6th, 1578. Ahmad II "the warmonger" now rules Fez, since the council of elders considered 'Abd Al-Malik's rule temporary.

15322849-eca.jpg

December 10th, 1583. My lord Ahmad II has ordered the construction of plantations in our new southern realms, so that serfdom will increase by 1, and lower our stability costs.

January 15, 1585. After a royal marriage, Bengal hath graciously allowed us to view their maps.

8594907-d68.jpg

March 20th, 1590. Fez hath repeated the diplomatic map trade with Delhi, revealing several central Asian lands. This year was also exceptional economically. The finance minister reports that our gold inflation be about 1% every 10 years, so this sets us back 20 years.

8594909-c45.jpg

June 13, 1590. Fez hath commissioned a refinery in Orania, where the peasants produce wine, so that we might prosper in foreign trade.

February 8th, 1592. There have been reports of bandits in Palanas, sent by Benin to intimidate local traders from Fez. Benin has denied all involvement, but our merchants know what the Beninese dialect be! Now that we have a casus belli, Benin shalt crumble beneath the rising land of Fez! Those heathen shalt pay for their insolence. Right after we build an army.

8594910-480.jpg

June 10th, 1592. The refinery of Orania hath been completed.

Ooh, this is a golden opportunity to get the CoT in Ivoria! Having a military mastermind in Ahmed II as monarch should secure a swift campaign. With a refinery in place (and hopefully a CoT as well), trade could be a major part of Fez' economy in the future.
