DEfinitely time to make Algiers yours.

Don Matito: Fez has what I call a "negligible army" of about 9k cavalry. This because the support limit be around 11k and Fez can't really afford to pay extra without a good reason.

Granada will be hard to attack, partially because we have to attack via sea, partially because Granada is mountainous, and partially because they have over 20 thousand men there! Methinks Algeria will be challenge enough without wasting our precious forces on them. Likewise, Granada will leave Fez alone because they have no way of reaching us.

stnylan: You never know which way the desert sands blow...towards the enemy, or, at times, in your face. :p

November, 1443.

The war:

< http://imgbolt.com/files/100836/EU2 2007-10-13 03-16-08-28.jpg >

There be an Algerian fleet off the coast of Morocco. Morocco in fact be sending men to Fez! Good job. Note that our army be on the navy, because we need a way to reach Algeria without fighting their army. We will go around them.

Bizarrely, Morocco won that battle outnumbered 3 to 1, attacking. I favour our allies in Morocco.

< http://imgbolt.com/files/100836/EU2 2007-10-13 03-17-57-78.jpg >

January, 1444.

The glorious Navy of Fez did battle off the coast of Morocco. They had 6 war ships and one transport. We had 16 galleys. Unfortunately, those brigands won. They simply look at any map to compare the size of Algieria to Fez, and their morale be improved - but we sank one of their war ships. We will triumph eventually...

February, 1444.

I have discovered Morocco's secret for winning battles with impossible odds: Lord Yahya Al-Wattasi. Very good!

< http://imgbolt.com/files/100836/EU2 2007-10-13 03-22-12-98.jpg >

This man also be an excellent king. I can only dream of such a leader among us.

The Algerians happen to have King Ahmad II leading their army. Fez be surrounded by aristocrats! Now, if only I could persuade King 'Abd Al-Haqq II to lead Fez to glory...

June, 1444.

We lost the second naval battle in Morocco. However, we did sink two war ships. Now we need four months to marshal our men again! Some times I do not understand war.

September, 1444.

Tunisia now be occupied by the Mameluks: I wish we could have sent help, but perhaps this be best for the alliance. You see, Tunisia shall be obsessed with their defence and in doing so be both a buffer to the Mameluks and fight off Algerian Swine.

< http://imgbolt.com/files/100836/EU2 2007-10-13 03-32-41-98.jpg >

We are unloading men to pillage Al-Djazair, the capital of Algeria, and provinces beyond.

Morocco be sieging Orania; Algiers Fez. Morocco be making good progress with that great lord of theirs.

< http://imgbolt.com/files/100836/EU2 2007-10-13 03-35-41-38.jpg >

December, 1444.

Kabylia has been plundered! We need every ducat, as, tragically, Fez can't afford to keep army maintenance at 100% - we would go bankrupt!

Morocco has captured Orania. This be great news! Furthermore, Algeria, disctracted by these events, has ended their siege of Fez! We defeated Algerian recuits in Kabylia. Now we travel to defeat some more in Aures. Hail Fez!

January, 1445.

We sank the Algerian navy off Morocco. We still have 16 galleys. Lord Yahya Al-Wattasi has now moved to defend Fez, and the Algerians are moving from Atlas to Orania with their huge army. I think we have these swine gutted.

February, 1445.

Algeria has sent a contingent of men to Aures. In a delicious bit of tactics worthy of the prophet, we plundered Aures, slew their recruits without losing a single man, and took our cavalry to plunder Al-Djazair before the Atlas men arrived!

March, 1445.

The army fled to Kabylia, which be blockaded by our great navy. Plunder has kept our treasury stable, but we don't have any more provinces to plunder save Atlas, which we can not reach now. Perhaps a siege of Kabylia be feasible...if that huge Algerian army stays away...

May, 1445.

Portugal sent a diplomatic insult, claiming in their letter that "Your idolatry shall end." Who cares? Not I.

The siege of Kabylia be a raging success with our blockade. Further, the Moroccans are in Algeria again, and the great Algerian army be distracted by them. The Algerian navy cowers in Al-Djazair harbour, afraid to raise their sails.

Algiers have sent a diplomat offering peace, with their treasury of 33 ducats. Those fools have evidently discovered they have sprayed more camel milk than they can drink!

< http://imgbolt.com/files/100836/EU2 2007-10-13 03-53-32-65.jpg >

Obviously, now not be the time to set them free.

July, 1445.

Granada, the enemy alliance leader, has offered us 50 ducats for peace. Indeed.

September, 1445.

The siege in Kabylia nearly be complete, the city starved. Lord Yahya Al-Wattasi fought Lord Ahmad II - 11,000 to 30,000. The Moroccans lost 3,000 men. The Algerians lost 5,000 men and the battle. There have been no changes here.

November, 1445.

We have seized a province!

< http://imgbolt.com/files/100836/EU2 2007-10-13 04-03-05-55.jpg >

January, 1446.

We have slaughtered the fresh recruits in Aures.

Bad news has come to our court this month! Lord Yahya Al-Wattasi has been wounded in Orania. He has retired to his palace in Morocco, his warrior days ended. This be grim news for the alliance.

May, 1446.

The Moroccans took about 6,000 men and broke the siege of Orania with 26,000 men. Methinks god just favours them. We are now moving to Al-Djazair.

June, 1446.

Believing the Moroccans were retreating to Aures from Orania, we moved to Al-Djazair. Alas, we were wrong. We fought, and defeated their great army, at the cost of about 2,000 cavalry.

We note that Tunisia beginning to field men again. They are not yet significant.

July, 1446.

Granada offered us 52 ducats. We need them, but to accept them would be folly.

December, 1446.

Here be the war in December.

< http://imgbolt.com/files/100836/EU2 2007-10-13 04-17-12-65.jpg >

We have seized the Algerian capital and Kabylia. The blockades were great! The Tunisians and Moroccans are sieging Aures. The Algerian lord be holed up with 17,000 men in Atlas. He has to move before the remains of his country can be seized. What a poor choice Algeria made in their declaration of war...

Morocco has received 46 ducats and Orania in a peace deal! This be good and bad. Good because I can now deal with the remaining provinces, and bad because I don't have Morocco's help. Or Orania. This be Morocco's first port.

Great war for Fez so far, although that Algerian army looks big. Hopefully they'll stay put in Atlas. Now onwards to Aures!

Ah, here is the place every thing comes apart for Fez. Orania is now a Moroccan province. We have Kabylia, so in order to best resolve the war, we must take Aures and Atlas.

BUT

Tunisia is sieging Aures, and I can't take that siege, so in order to prevent a Orania style debacle, I actually prefer Ahmad II move to Aures and free the province. Fez can move through Orania, but Algerians can not...

If Tunisia is allowed to take Aures, this will incur a significant delay while I allow lord Ahmad II to recover the province from them. And then there is the matter of the army. We could never win if King Ahmad II had the sense to attack any siege we began - but then, neither could they. :p

Fez shall wear these Algerians down...

I've read this recently, and must say that your preservation skills are astonishing :D. Great job getting rid of the Portuguese, at least for now, and yeah, hopefully Algiers won't prove too much of a pain in the @$$...

February, 1447.

A white peace has been signed with the Mameluks, and Fez and Morocco. I did not realize as of June, that a separate peace had been made. As this be a white peace, no special declarations are a part of this deal - we just stop fighting.

5816083-ba5.jpg

April, 1447.

Tunisia captured Aures. Lord Ahmad II has been dislodged, so this be excellent news. We will capture Atlas; let Ahmad II capture Aures, then when Ahmad II moves to capture any other province, we shall sieze Aures, thus removing the Algerians from control of any of their provinces, and us full control of theirs!

June, 1447.

Granada offered us 153 ducats. Hmm, still insulting.

February, 1448.

The Tunisians stole our Atlas siege, and Algeria has recaptured Al-Djazair. Ahhh!

July, 1448.

I have arranged a Royal Marriage with Gujarat to butter them up for a cartography party.

September, 1448.

Granada be offering us 177 ducats. Gosh, I hope they do not spend them, I would like ducats when the flag of Fez be raised in new provinces!

October, 1448.

Gujarat has shared their maps. Hey, wait a second...where did all that land come from? Perhaps the edge of the world be moving outward!

8161321-6dd.jpg

We now have a Royal Marriage with Arakan. I hope 'Abd Al-Haqq II can keep pumping out daughters for this.

December, 1448.

We have recaptured Al-Djazair. The Tunisians took Atlas. The Tunisians are losing battles with Granada. While I do appreciate whittling their army down, the matter of the war balance be a problem. The Algerians are still working on the siege of Aures. Now, Fez has to wait for Algeria to decide to recapture Atlas as well if we are to control their lands.

There appears to be a cattle infestation in Castile. Barbarians.

8161323-6e4.jpg

March, 1449.

We have lost a battle in Aures. This war drags on and on.

July, 1449.

We lost Al-Djazair again.

September, 1449.

Arakan shared their maps with us. Finally, we have found the end of the world!

15321257-f3b.jpg

Royal Marriages with Malacca and Aden have been prepared. I suspect that these two kingdoms might harbour knowledge which we lack.

March, 1450.

We captured Aures. Methinks the capital must be left in Algerian hands before they will ever bother to take Atlas from the Tunisians. Worthless allies.

Our best nomadic traders have consulted with the court, and we believe that, if in theory there were land that was not already occupied in the world, which be absurd, we could build a trading post on that land. Whatever.

8161325-7c3.jpg

April, 1450.

On approaching Al-Djazair, the Algerians immediately interrupted their siege of Kabylia. Good, good... We will plunder their land and rest in Orania. I hope the Algerians take Atlas!

August, 1450.

A trader has produced plans for an arts academy at court today. I have never heard such a daft idea. We could never afford the construction, in any case.

15321301-da3.jpg

November, 1450.

Our men accidentally ran in to Algerian rebel scum in Atlas. Fortunately, they were quickly slaughtered. Unfortunately, they can not be used to seize the Tunisian garrison there.

January, 1451.

Lord Ahmad II has chosen to siege Tunisia. Fine. Sure. Whatever. I care not, as long as that Atlas garrison be persuaded to leave!

March, 1451.

Granada offers us 226 ducats. Keep saving, Granada!

May, 1451.

The war be going well, now. We are not sieging Al-Djazair, but plundering it. Malacca offered Fez their maps, for ours:

September, 1451.

'Abd Al-Haqq II was advised to mandate that each village have an approved copy of the Qur'an, thus centralising power.

November, 1451.

Algiers captured Tunisia. Thus far, they have not made peace. Granada appears to have its hands full with a huge Castillian army. Yes, I am glad we are not allied with them!

April, 1452.

Strangely, we have a white peace with Granada even though we are fighting with their alliance (as be the custom, the white peace includes no declarations). I do not pretend to understand diplomacy. I think Granada be just about finished, alas.

I just discovered Morocco declared war on Algiers again, for some reason. Hmm. I don't like this.

Granada is soon going to fall. Lets hope the Iberians (especially the Portugese) don't turn their eyes on Fez again after their war is over.

So Morocco wants to steal more lands from Algiers again? Are there any more Algerian provinces which aren't under your alliance's control already? Too bad Tunisia control Atlas and you control Aures; it would have been much better if it had been the other way around, considering a possible peace offer :)

I don't like the size of the Moroccan army, and I do not like that they have two borders with you. Looking forward to seeing how this ends, good luck.

You should have taken the money when you had your chance :)

Yeah, money is your best friend in a situation like this. Why didn't you want to take it? Were they the leader of the alliance with Algiers? Sorry if you'd already said it, I must have forgotten or missed it.
Hopefully you'll get something useful off the Algerians at least...

I did not take the money because I had already invested more than what they offered in BB, maintenance and time, and desired a return. And because I'm stupid :p

November, 1452.

Surprisingly, Granada was able to pay off their invaders with 232 ducats. We have arranged an alliance with Granada. We can't offer them a vassalization with glorious Fez until we are at peace with Algiers, but without a border...they will probably refuse. We will requite Gibraltar for that.

June, 1454.

The peasants be revolting in Tangiers. Unprecedented! Unprovoked! This just be life. Note that Algiers has captured Orania.

October, 1454.

The rebels were slain. We lost about 15 men.

January, 1455.

After an endless siege, the Algerians retook Aures. Now if they would just be nice about this, and turn to Atlas to get rid of that accursed Tunisian garrison...

April, 1455.

Algeria has, of course, gone for the Tunisians again, turning away from Atlas. Let them take Tunisia again, let them take their whole damn country back and annex Tunisia. I want this done right!

December, 1455.

The Algerians are moving EAST, when I want them to take Atlas. Has our court been infiltrated by spies? Why do they not take Atlas?

February, 1456.

Lord Ahmad be moving East to attack Tunisia and ignoring their captured province of Atlas. Arrrgh! Then they will probably attack Fez, still ignoring Atlas, am I not wrong?

April, 1457.

Tunisia be winning the war themselves. My hands are tied in this matter, all Fez can do is sit and plunder Algeria. Maybe Granada will war with Castile for some interesting actions.

December, 1457.

A long, poorly planned war this was. Tunisia almost grabbed all the provinces. I fear they will collect provinces in a peace deal, so I have contacted the Algerians and allowed them to make peace for 50 ducats. The war be over...and Fez be largely where it started.

I suppose we all know how bad it feels to have invested so much time and effort into a war, and then because of some unfortunate turn of events it all goes to waste... Nevertheless, good that they didn't attack your lands.

FlorisDeVijfde said:
Fez has survived but still only has 2 provinces. What are your next plans?

I think Algeria still be ripe for the picking, they only have that one army and once their army is gone, their provinces will fall quickly.

Olav - I was not happy about Orania. Algeria quickly overran Orania as the pictures show, but Algeria can't access Morocco without military access, and probably wouldn't attack them before attacking me, if we were at war. So this be one of those stalemates. Morocco has a powerful army, but they don't appear inclined to use it. Morocco would be very difficult to fight; I would rather be diplomatic with their people.

September, 1461.

The court of 'Abd Al-Haqq II has decreed that all religious services must be as according to the Royal Minister of Islamic Matters in Fez. Centralisation increased!

February, 1462.

Messenger's report: Lord Ahmad II of Algeria has died. His successor be militarily equal to 'Abd Al-Haqq II, which is to say, poor. Presumably this can only weaken Algeria. I want to know how much time shall pass before my lord's ill humours overcome him.

April, 1462.

I have arranged a Royal Marriage with Nogai.

August, 1462.

Nogai shared their maps with our cartographers.

May, 1463.

We are issuing a fresh war declaration to Algiers. I think this time I will try keeping Tunisia out of the fray, though that means there will be fighting, and I hope Morocco (which is still in its separate war with Algeria) will be of aid.

Granada reports they are at war with Castile now. Wow, horrible timing, Granada! I reluctantly accept. Thereafter, Portugal joins Castile in battle. Hmm, why are we doing this again?

September, 1464.

The war ministry informed me that in one of our numerous battles with Castile off Gibraltar, we captured the rutters of that nation. Who knows what this news brings Fez?

I note with sadness that our allies have been Portuguesed. I had wished that Fez could attack Castile later and seize Gibraltar, then annex Granada, but these plans have no backing, as the record will show.

March, 1465.

Portugal siezed Tangiers [this happened historically in 1471], and the capital be controlled by Algerians. Thus did the Portuguese annex Tangiers without Royal consent. This could be the end for Fez. Note that Fez controls some Algerian provinces and can't simply be annexed. Portugal's war crimes must be punished, but Fez is too poor to retaliate.

Morocco requested military access of Fez. I can't imagine why they waited until now to request this.

May, 1465.

This afternoon, 'Abd Al-Haqq II collapsed in the palace, and he has now died. His successor be known simply as "Muhammad." Muhammad be superior to our old lord in many respects. Long live Muhammad! Long live Fez!

Morocco, having been granted military access, is sieging the Algerians at Fez, while the Royal Army of Fez is in Atlas now.

February, 1467.

I have ordered that a loan be taken to pay wages for men to conquer Algiers. We lost Tangiers...

May, 1467.

Algiers paid Morocco 125 ducats for peace. Ironically it be Algiers that held Orania.

August, 1467.

We won an important battle against the Algerian forces in Al-Djazair. We just won the war against Algiers!

March, 1468.

Good news arrived from Al-Djazair. These are sad times for Fez, with Tangiers in the Portuguese swine's hooves, but today we have seized control of Algeria. Many provinces shall be ours, and we will have a port again. We will recover.

We took Atlas (finally), Aures and the port of Kabylia. We also received 100 ducats. With this I am training two tax collectors, for 58 ducats each. We still have to repay our loan.

Crikey that was a closer run affair that anyone would have liked. At least you have gotten out of it alive.
