So, what exactly is the premise behind an AAR, and why am I so crappy at this game? (Been playing the tutorial and I can't seem to win back any territories I lose...)
I believe, although I could be wrong, that AAR stands for "After-Action Report", but mostly it is excuse for the more literary-minded of us to exercise our egos and imaginations while we play (read "learn") this game. These can range from simple summaries of games being played to full-blown novellas that seemingly have nothing to do with EU1, or any other game in the Paradox box.
I started mine to become world-famous and make lots of money.
I chose Sweden because the game originates from there. Figured it would be a good idea to kiss up to the big dogs so they would notice me and make me rich.
Plus, at the time I started it, there were not too many AAR's on Sweden, if I remember correctly. That has changed I think.

Now I'm not unique.
Which reminds me. Do you know how to catch a unique rabbit? <pause> You 'neak up on it.
As for you being crappy at the game, well don't feel all left out and alone in the world, partner. Yours truly ain't no kind of super-gamer neither.
You have found the "feature-list" for this game I hope. (Some call 'em "cheat codes". How crass!) It helps when you are trying to figure the game out. Don't try to win the first few times out. Play around, see how things work and interact. Read the forums (a lot). Ask questions (you're already doing that). You'll have to get better after all that. Right? Right?!
Well, if you aren't old and worn-out like me you stand a chance of getting better.
