Boleslaw II the Bold(Śmiały) ruled 1058 - 1089 born 1040 - 1089
Description:
Bolesław II was proud and brave man. He rewarded friends generously, but for enemies and traitors he had no mercy. He was also excellent warrior and commander, able to use any opportunities on battlefield .
He ruled in times of conflict between Pope and Emperor, taking side of the head of church. In year 1066 he threw challenge at Holy Roman Empire, crowning himself a king. He also strengthened his power by introducing royal prerogatory law, towards discontent his vassals.
Feeling that his position is strong, on the same year king invaded Pomeranians.
Despite numerous ambushes in wild forests and swamps of Pomerania, the strenght of numbers of Polish armies sufficed. After conquest of main Pomeranian towns, Bolesław announced himself the duke of Pomerania.
Immediately clergy was settled, the often brutal Christianization of pagan population began.
Boleslaw took for wife Danish princess, Ingrid Knytling same year.
In 1070, after easy victory over Pomeranians, king invaded Polabian Slavs. Two weeks after crossing Oder river, in vicinity of town Hobolin Bolesław's four thousand people army encountered six thousand Polabians.
Pagan army consisted mainly of spearmen and archers which occupied defensive position on small hill. Boleslaw besides infantry had also light and heavy cavalry. First, he sended light horsemens which seconds before reaching enemy fled under rain of arrows. Large part of Polabian warriors moved in pursue, spoiling their defensive line. The king of Poland only waited for this.He comanded infantry to atack on gap in centre, while he charged with heavy cavalry on enemy's flank. Battle ended with Boleslaw's desecive victory.
During several next weeks Poles with help of Danes conquered whole Mecklemburg. Boleslaw declared himself duke of these lands.
Unfortunately control over so extensive territory wasn`t easy. Pomeranians more easily accepted the new king and religion, because they were once part of Poland. However, west from Oder river chaos, revolts and clergy murders spreaded. This whole situation irritated king. He was afraid of Emperor`s intervention.
In years 1071-1075 local aristocracy in Danzig, Slupsk, Stettin and Wolgast mostly accepted Christianity.
In 1076 Vratislav the duke of Bohemia, encouraged by example from Poland, crowned himself king, breaking off dependence from Empire. Boleslaw created defensive alliance with him, in case of German threat. King of Poland also became closest ally of Pope, who valued his efforts in converting pagans over Baltic sea.
From year 1081, Polish ruler became less and less sane. He began to have visions, in which his legendary ancestor, Piast gave him instructions what to do, to prevent fall of his kingdom.
One of his first strange decissions was granting his juvenile sons ducal titles, in year 1082. Ten years old Przemysław was sended to Pomerania, and eight years old Pelka, to Mecklemburg.
The same year, he organized great tourney in which he participated, risking his life. He became wounded in axes duel.
When king treated his wounds, archbishop of Krakow rebelled. Bolesław defeated him and in agreement with Pope banished him away from country. He placed his son Przeclaw as duke of Krakow.
In year 1084, king declared war upon Kiev, which were also at war with Hungary. Without much difficulties, he captured Vladimir, Halicz and Kiev.
During this campaign Prussians invaded duchy of Pomerania. Duke of Kiev accepted peace, giving away Vladimir and claims to this title. However he waited with help to his son Przemyslaw in Pomerania. When young duke pushed Prussians out of Vistula, Bolesław entered to Chelmno, and then he accepted peace with Prussians. Propably king wanted his first-born to learn craft of war fighting alone, however Przemyslaw had never forgiven his father.
Soon after end of war Bolesław created the duchy of Sandomierz, which he gave to his youngest son Bezprym.
In year 1087 the archbishop of Wielkopolska rebelled. He was defeated, but vassals' discontent growed up. They started to plot against mad king.
In 1088, duke Przemyslaw moved on Krakow, supported by purses of other vassals. However he wasn`t so good commander as his father. Boleslaw defeated him and Przemyslaw fled to Hungary. Soon after, king`s vassals began war preparations. But at start of the next year mad king died, old wound from tournament finally killed him. Throne was inherited by Bolesław's most powerful son, Przecław.

RGB - thanks. Yes, last ten years of reing king got 'realm duress'. It is sometimes hard to find good images, and I am using mostly those related to Poland. Good luck with your AAR.
Fulcrumvale - Yes, they are. At least with 1.05 patch it is more difficult. When I played 1.00 before, there was some strange 'snow-ball' efect when conquering pagan lands.
Przeclaw I was honest, wise and just man. He received, good diplomatic education. He needed this skills badly.
When he took crown in year 1089, country was on edge of civil war. New king managed to calm down the stirred vassals.
In year 1090, pagan Pruthenians and Lithuanians fought victorious war with duchy of Kiev. Przecław felt uneasy about their growing power. He decided to intervene. During short war with tribe of Pruthenians, he liberated rich counties of Kiev and Halicz.
King used next two years of peace, to build road network in his domain.
In years 1090-1092, pagan raids on north-eastern Poland intensified. Help was ofered by Order of Teutonic Knights.
During polish-teutonic expedition of 1092, christian forces defeated Prussians and Yatviags. Teutonic Knights received land, later named Marienburg. The king of Poland received Galindia. Przecław created duchy of Prussia on those lands.
A. D. 1093 first crusade ended... with fall of Rome to Muslims. Pope fled to Burgundy, and announced Second Crusade, which aim was liberation of eternal city from hands of unfaithful.
Hearing this, Przecław called for flower of polish knighthood, and soon expedition moved south. When crusaders approached northern slopes of Alps, messenger from Poland brought dire news. Kingdom of Hungary declared war on duke of Sandomierz.
Conflict, lasting one year took many hungarian and polish lives. When poles began winning superiority by autumn 1094, royal army fell in ambush in one of Carpathian moutain passes. Attack was pushed away, but king Przecław became seriously wounded in leg. Peace, keeping status quo, was signed.
Later on1095, the king's brother, duke of Mecklemburg - Pełka, openly demanded crown, claiming that Przecław is not able to rule wounded. King disagreed.
Several months later, Pełka created alliance with Emperor, and together they invaded Poland. Vast, german-meklemburg army was superior to polish both, by numbers and quality. Aged marshal Spytko was the commander of polish forces. He held this position from times of Bolesław II, being experienced veteran and strategist. Instead of open atack he began guerilla warfare. He organized ambushes, lighting fast atacks and retreats, using the knowledge of terrain. Irritated german commander, demanded pitched battle from Spytko, questioning his knightly honour. Polish marshal refused, and he let germans conquer upper and lower Silesia. When weakened and demoralized army reached near Krakow, Spytko attacked. In great, for those times battle, Poles won.
After victory, they had the initiative, pursuing broken enemy to Frankonia - place of Emperors seat.
After several months of siege, Emperor Heinrich agreed to sign white peace in year1096. Words of this victory echoed over Europe. Unfortunately, earlier Pelka became vassal of Emperor, detaching Meklemburg from Poland.
In 1097 king Przeclaw died without heir. Crown went to stronger of his two brothers...

The dying King Przeclaw`s last will, was indication of his rebellious brother as heir to the throne, towards surprise of his courtiers. In this way, he dispalayed great wisdom, because duchy Mecklemburg came back to Poland.
Pelka was modest man, with superb economic skills. Royal treasury began filling up quickly. He was also excessively suspicious, seeing conspiracy everywhere. Justly, as majority of his vassals, courtiers and common serfs considered him traitor.
Just after he took crown in year 1097, ambitious duke of Prussia, Zbigniew, attacked Lithuanians. In response, alliance of Teutonic Knights and Pruthenians declared war on Prussia . Teutonic Brothers proved, that they desired only power, and they were even ready, to enter arrangement with pagans.
Pelka managed to sign peace with Lithuanians and Teutonic Grandmaster, and after short war he took Sambia - last land of Pruthenian tribe.
In year 1099, Polish King amazingly avoided death from assassin`s hands. Pelka killed his opponent after short fight, so it was unknown who hired him.
The same year Lithuanians invaded Poland. When king traveled to met his army besieging castle in Podlasia, he fell in ambush. Pelka fought bravely, but at last he was taken captive. The Lithuanians demanded high ransom, but regency, with marshal Spytko refused. King was murdered, throne went to his six-year-old son Ziemowit. White peace with pagans was signed.
