War has begun, the shroud of the dark side has decended.
German forces poured over the Polish frontier with Panzers blitzing fast through all opposition, they were unstopable. Soon all polish resitenc collapsed and with-in two weeks poland was annexed for the Axis.
In a more daring operation which had been conceived well over a year ago by the OKH, in response to portugal joining the allies. German ships plying the atlantic had indictated prewar that there were 3+ British Divisions garrisioned on the azores. This was a suprise since the azores were portugals soviergn land, something was a amiss here, what was churchill up to. With Spain being threatened from the north by France, South from gibralter, West from Portugal and its sea lanes threatened with the garrisioning of the azores it was decided portugal would be dealt with first along with the azores.
Hitler informed Franco that it would take 3-4 waves of invasion troops to secure the island from there entrenched defenders, using the best troops avaible at the time, these being moutain troops mixed in with regualar infantry, with supporting artillery brigades and commando leaders. Each wave would hit the beaches seperatley to slowly ware down the defenders, with the bulk of the German carrier fleet supporting the operation, which included 10 CV's.
Th first wave went in, after a day of fighting the commander informed the admiral that the first wave had been ineffective, the admiral ordered the second wave to launch. In a tacitcal blunder, a junior spanish commanded errored and convinced the commander of the third wave to launch as well, resulting in over crowding on the Tranports and confusion on the beaches. The rigid troops pressed there attacks and nearly won the day. Another blunder had occured the 4th wave transports had run out of fuel and could not reach the beaches for the landing, luckily this was spoted a week befor the invasion was planned an the Tranports were only a day away when the 2nd & 3rd waves failed to secure the azores. A junior spainish logistics officer was shot for this error. Once the 4th wave was positioned it hit the beaches hard knowing they were our only hope.
It was at this time a UK CV fleet showed up with 6 CV's. The German CV fleet immiediatly intercepted the British fleet and began naval operations. With-in hours 2 UK CV's were heavily damaged and the fleet was forced to retreat or stay and face certain destruction at the hands of the mighty German Navy. The invasion continued and by a stroke of luck succeeded, Hitler was most pleased, that his well concieved operation had worked. 3 British divisions were transported back to Germany and forces to work in munitions factories for the duration of the war.
The invasion of the azores was close to a disaster but in the end turned out to be a great success, it was just like real life, some times a bit of luck makes can turn defeat into victory.
In the mean time Spainish forces were busy overunning much of portugal and in daily battles with the RAF based out of Gibralter. Once Portugal was secured German naval forces began limited convoy operations in the atlanitc with early successes sinking UK shipping by the dozen. In the months to come the German convoys operation will reach full strength in the early parts of 1940, then we shall see how well they will do. FDR was also heard complaining to a german spy in the whitehouse how the German fleet had had reduced trade effiectiveness to less then 55%, this was valuable info, thanks FDR.
Italy Decleared war on yougoslavia, and qucikly penertrated the frontier provinces. In a suprsie move the UK pushed for Yougoslavia to join the Allies which they accepted, and hence the UK was now at war with Italy as well. I suspect churchill hill was furious at losing the azores and so decided to take it out on poor musolini know that retribution on Germany was beyond the UK's capability.
British forces quickly overan much of north africa with out firing a shot, as italy had already decided pre war that north africa is simply not worth the effort, and had repositioned much of its army to mainland italy to await further operations in the future. The Allies now asked Greece to join there Alliacne and they accepted. Soon italian forces were rushing over the Greek border, and soon nearly all of greece will also be in Italian hands, after the UK duped its people into believing that they would protect them. That should serve as evidence of how the UK treats it allies, only as cannon fooder for the aixs.
This is basialy where the session ended, in late October 39. Interesting developments, will be good to see what happens in next session once France falls and the UK is forces to defend its mainland, as its fleet has already proved useless. Good sessions guys.
