hi experts!

you're my last hope to get hoi running!

have installed hoi on my desktop (winME; celeron 500mhz, 128mb). hoi runs soundly on the desktop, yet performance is poor due to limited hardware resources.

therefore, i installed it on my notebook (winXP home, p4 2,6mhz, 512mb, nvidia g-force 4, directX 9), as well! after a few seconds and no particular stage of playing, the game crashes completely (without return to windows)!

tried to fix problem with installation of latest nvidia-driver and hoi patch 1.05. the game worked superbly for 2 days! but, when i went back to it yesterday (without any alteration), the same damn crash occured again repeatedly.

i'm absolutely perplexed! why did it run so well for hours just to break down again the next day?

here're my questions:

1) are there any general problems known concerning nvidia-videodevices and hoi?

2) heard from a companion that he had problems with directX 9 in combination with nvidia-videocards. did you get any similiar feedback concerning problems with directX 9 and hoi?

3) what about hoi 1.05c. i will install the patch tonight, anyway. is there a slight chance that 1.05c will solve the breakdown-problems?

4) generally: is there anybody out there who has a clue to help me out of this misery?

i desperately want to get back to this magnificent game.

thanks for your support,
cheers
beeswax.

Make sure you have renamed the AVI folder to AVI_back.
Set your color depth to 16BIT.

Try that and see if it helps.

hi castellon!

please excuse my lack of knowledge. seen your hint a couple of times in the forum, yet could you please specify "rename avi folder to avi_back", e.g. where do i find it?

thanks,
beeswax.

You will see it in the HOI folder, (Where you installed HOI).

And incase you didnt know, color settings is on your desktop.(right click, goto properties, and then goto the prefrences tab and set your changes.)

Dave
PS~If you plan to use the editor it is manditory that you set your color setting to 16-bit otherwise it wont work.

Also known to cause trouble with some vid cards in game as well.

Since you have DirectX 9 make sure you have the latest update (9.0b I think).
In-game crashes could be game bugs rather than system problems. 1.05c does fix some bugs in 1.05. Does the saved game crash on the same date always? Have you tried starting a new game to see if it crashes?

Your WinME problem is probably not enough memory. HoI is quite memory-intensive and WinME itself has higher memory requirements than Win98 (as well as being less stable in general).

I have run HoI on several nVidia cards but I don't use DX9. I don't think you need more than DX 8.1 unless you have the latest generation of video card.

Upgrade now you need 9 for Vicky. :)

@castellon.

didn't have much time (30min) to try your suggestions. the tiny changes of folder-rename and colour depth seem to work for the moment. will test later.

no! apparently, crashes have nothing to do with date!
did not have any stability problems with winME, only when running on winXP!
will download lates directX, as well!

thanks for the moment, mates.

You can disable it if you wish but I don't think that is your problem.
