I read the stickies but I still have the following problem: HOI will run for a while (sometimes 1 hour sometimes 2) and then it will hang requiring a Cntl-Alt-Del. The Task Window then shows 100% CPU usage and a memory counter that is going up. I have been playing HOI for a while, but this is my first game at the 1.05 level. I never had hangs at 1.04 on this same computer. I feel like I am in the movie "Groundhog Day" as I have to keep restarting at Nov 29th 1942. I have taken Antwerp and Phenom Phen at least 3 different times.

I'd appreciate any help you can give. Or if you need more info let me know.

Thanks

Rename AVI folder to AVI_back.
Upgrade to 1.05C
You say you can play an hour or two, but then say you have to play the same date over and over again?
If you can play an hour or two from a save why would you be repeating the same day over and over again?

Thanks I will try those things. I read in other posts about the AVI stuff but never in relationship to hanging. What is the AVI? I'll also do the upgrade, but I am currently in the midst of a game that I have saved. Will I be able to continue that game or will I need to start a new one.

That is also the reason I keep going back to Nov 29th. That is the date of my last save...So after a hang I keep having to back to that date.

The AVi's are the intro movies, renaming the folder stops the Bink player from loading, thus you get no movies but you avoid the problem of the Bink player not unloading from memory on some configs, and thus causeing memory problems which can lead to a crash.

Why not tuen auto save on that way you only have to go back at most a month? Or save the game yourself more often.

1.05C should allow you to continue, but make a copy of your save just incase, that way you can revert back if you need to.

Thanks! I will try autosave again, but my last experience was that it did not save very frequently (but then again neither do I).
I get a bit engrossed in the game and forget about saving, until it hangs and then I get mad at myself.

I appreciate the help and the speed of the replies! Thanks.

I'll let you know if I need more help.

You should also upgrade to DirectX 8.1 or above. I don't think it's the cause of this problem but it is listed as a system requirement.

I don't remember what the default save frequency is for autosave but I (and probably most experienced people) have it set to save as often as possible which is every month. The only downside of this is that on a very low-end machine it can take a while to save but it should be fine on yours.

Yes you can and should set it monthly.

Also good catch jdrou, Missed that DirectX.
Definately should upgrade ASAP.

I have done all the upgrades, but am still hanging. It is interesting to note that when I go back to restart the old saved game it hangs as soon as I start the saved game. I get all the way to the opening screen with the "Start Game" banner, but it hangs there. What seems to work is a HOIfix followed by a reboot of the PC.

I have started saving more often and have set the autosave to 1 month, but the system will usually hang after about 30-90 mins of play time. I have usually only progressed 1-2 weeks by then.

Is there anything else I can try? This only started happening on 1.05. I never experienced these hangs on 1.04.

Thanks

Set the color depth to 16BIT.
Turn the Music off in the HOI settings profram.

Let me know what effect this has then I will have something else for you to try.

Will do. No that you mention it I did add some of my own MP3's and then modified the txt file, but they seem to work. I will turn off the music and see what happens. I am always set to 16 bit.

Thanks again!

Messing with the files is kind of important to let me know. ;)

Castellon...my bad. Well I have tried music on and off. Settings at 800x600 and 1280x740(?) but I still get the random hangs. I am saving about every 5 days so it is bearable. I promise that I have not modified anything else. Is there anything else I can try?

You can try and reduce your Video acceleration, turn it off and if that works turn it up a notch at a time until it does not.
You can also try the same thing with the sound card.

I will give it a try. I'd like to download and copy over the 1.05 picture pack from the sticky thread, but I will wait, unless you think there would be no risk of affecting the current issue.

Thanks!

You may also want to run DirectX diagnostic.
