Okay I will start by saying I easily meet the minimum system requirements and I am playing HOI V1.05 (not b).

I just rebuilt my PC and before the rebuild everything was fine, the only things I did diferently were install Norton. I tried disabling it and still get the flicker so I don't think it is that. I am pretty sure that I have the lastest drivers for G Card and Sound as well.

Basically what happens is the screen flickers every few seconds and the game crashes all the time.

Any Ideas???

Sounds like you have something running in the background.

If you are sure you have nothing running, try the following.

Rename your AVi folder to AVI_back, update your video drivers, adjust the refresh rate, if that does not work try the acceleration setting for your video card.

Ok I have tried all these things. I have checked my drivers (all latest), my system, my power supply (ok), my ram (36% free when playing HOI game).

I am baffled as to why this is happening. The flicker starts even before I start to play the game! On the main menu where you can select single player etc the flicker is present even here. Every few seconds or so.

I really cant think what this could be. I know the game works with my system ok because I played it fine before the rebuild so it must be something I have donbe or installed.

Hit ctrl-alt-del once, when HOI is running. Copy and paste all the process/Programs that are running, into a post here.

I'm having the same problem...
And it has just started, unfortunately I cant work out what I way have installed which might have caused this...(and it is only this game)
I am running 1.05b. Same flicker with Stoney and Core versions.

I have turned all background stuff off (mp3 etc)
Tried different resolutions and refresh rates...
Oh and its happening on both of my machines.

I'll keep plugging away

Can you guys give me the make and model of your Video cards please, also the driver version you are using for it. Thanks.

I'm starting to wonder if its my LCD screen?
(I have checked the refresh rates etc)

Do you have a little Icon that controls your card, down at the bottom of the screen beside the Time and Date?
If so rightclick it and shut it down. Then see if the flicker occurs.

Can you give me a listing of all processes/Programs running after you boot up and close those programs, and just before you run HOI. Also you have renamed your AVI folder to AVI_back right?

I have exactly the same problem - random screen flickers during the gamemenu and later in the game.

This problem has only occured after I installed the 1.05 patch. There were no problems with the 1.04 version. The only changes to my system in between were the installation of the latest NVidia graphics drivers and Windows 2000 patches before updating however so there might a problem (though I tend to doubt it). Reinstalling the older graphics driver doesn't help BTW. Renaming the avi folder doesn't help and neither does changing the refresh rate.
Any ideas?

Same question to you as I posted above your post.

Thanks for the quick reply.
It seems I got it to work although I had to reformat my D:\ drive. After a clean install and application of the 1.05c patch it seems to run smoothly. Hopefully it continues to stay that way.
Could too much drive fragmentation have been the cause?

Anything that slows down performace, could cause that problem.

Fix without formatting?

Did anyone come up with a way to fix the flickering without reformatting? I bought the game recently and it worked great until I installed the 1.05-NA patch and now I have this incredibly annoying flicker that even uninstalling the game and reinstalling will not fix. I even made sure to delete the Stategyfirst folder before reinstalling again and I did everything that was listed above to try and stop it.

I do not have this problem on the desktop or in any other game nor did I have this problem until I installed patch 1.05.

Is there any other files installed outside the StrategyFirst folder that need to be deleted that 1.05 installs? Jus seems strange that I can't even get it back to a pre-1.05 working condition.

It is most likely not related to installing the 1.05 patch. Rather some minor change you made like a new driver setting.

That is the real reason why reformatting works in so many of these cases, since everything with the operating system is put back at default.

Are you sure you tried all of the following:

Rename your AVI folder to AVI_back, update your video drivers, adjust the refresh rate, if that does not work try the acceleration setting for your video card.

If you have I will need this:
Can you give me a listing of all processes/Programs running after you boot up and close those programs, and just before you run HOI.

I updated Catalyst drivers and that didn't help.

task manager
remote control manager (for soundblaster)
ctdvddet.exe (soundblaster)
cthelper.exe (soundblaster)
spoolsv.exe
explorer
svchost (4 copies)
ati manager
lsass.exe
services.exe
winlogon.exe
csrss.exe
smss.exe
mspmspsv.exe
iexplore.exe
system
system idle process

I almost always have my printer manager, the soundblaster taskbar icon, AIM, and MSN running as well.

The flicker is nothing like a refresh flicker. I can see the screen go fully to black very quickly (I'd say 100-300 ms for each flicker) for one or more instances in a row, and occurs seemingly at random, though it could be tied in with disk access. (often happens when loading at start)

However, I highly doubt it has to do with the quality of my computer, given that it's top-of-the-line handbuilt. I also haven't had problems with a dozen or so other games, 3d and 2d alike.

AMD 3200+ chip
Gigabit Mobo
2 gigs of dual channel Corsair memory
Hercules 9800 pro
Soundblaster Audigy 2
two 36 gig WD 10000 RPM Serial ATA drives in a striped array
one DVD drive, no access occuring

I started with the 1.05b patch, so it may be the patch.

I see you still have this running! It has been known to cause problems.

Shut down everything else you mentioned as well. Most of them have been known to cause exactly this kind of problem.
