Hi.

I've got a serious CTD problem after upgrading to Vista SP1 on my Vista x64 Home Premium installation.

After many rounds of uninstalling & installing Doomsday & Armageddon I came to the following results:

1. Doomsday 1.0 fresh install in a new folder, CTD when Initializing Globals.
2. Doomsday 1.3a upgrade applied, same result as 1.
3. Armageddon 1.0 applied, same result as 1.
4. Armageddon 1.1 applied, actually loads the menu and I can select campaign and country. When I press the start button I get CTD.

Different Compatibility modes doesn't change anything, neither does "Run as administrator". I used "Run as Administrator" when I did the installation & patching.

Interestingly my EU3 installation still works flawlessly.
I'm out of ideas short of a complete reinstallation of the OS.

Uninstall SP1 for Vista... it is a beta. Wait a few months till the real version of SP1 comes out.

Turn off UAC before doing any of the installs.

Plus like you did before install in a different folder like C:\games

Thanks for your fast answer.

SP1 is not a beta since february 14th. I've got it using my Microsoft Technet account. It solves quite a few problems but will likely create some also.

Since I used "Run as administrator" for both the HoI2 installation & the following upgrades I assumed that disabling UAC wasn't really necessary, I could be wrong here. When I installed Hoi2 on this PC initially 6 months ago I did not need to use any special tricks to get it running.

My last installation was indeed in a different folder, even on a different disk. The installation process seems to work normally, no error messages etc.

Afaik HoI2 is my only installed software that won't run after the SP1 upgrade.

An update on this:

  • Complete uninstallation
  • Cleaning of the registry
  • UAC disabled
  • Reboot
  • Creation of new Installation folder on new disk
  • Disabling of Antivirus program
  • Installation of Doomsday using "Run as Administrator"
  • Test
  • Installation of Armageddon using "Run as Administrator"
  • Test
  • Installation of Armageddon patch 1.1 using "Run as Administrator"
  • Test

Results are exactly as in my previous attempt, only Armageddon 1.1 can pass the "Initializing Globals" phase and it still produces a CTD when I select a campaign & country and press the Start button.

Have also checked DXDiag and everything looks Ok.

What to do now?

Not sure what to tell you, if your not playing with any mods.

TRy setting your video to 16 bit colors and maybe try it in WINDOWED mode.

I am still waitting for SP1 to come out so I can install it desperately. Since you got it on technet any chance you can send it to me *wink* hehe. I have an MSDN account but its not there.

I have actually been using TRP as my main installation but it also refused to load, all test mentioned above was with vanilla however.

Tried as you suggested 16 bit & windowed but no go unfortunately. I'm going to make a complete reinstallation of Vista tonight, including SP1 :)
Will post an update tomorrow.

Would be glad to send you SP1 but it's quite large, the size of x64 & x86 is 726 & 434 MB respectively. You can get it from torrent sites but I didn't dare.

If you had a previous version of SP1 for Vista (a beta) did you uninstall it first before you installed the RTM of Vista SP1?

There have been issues with drivers not responding right after an SP1 install...

See this page....

I did not install any of the previous SP1 betas, only been using the ordinary Windows Update.

Display driver problem could be an educated guess, should have checked nVidias site for updates for my 7600GT. But, reinstalling as I write this, using my wifes PC now :)

Final update.

  • Vista x64 Home Premium reinstalled
  • SP1 applied.
  • Doomsday installed
  • Armageddon installed
  • Armageddon patch 1.1 installed
  • Test

Everything works just like it's supposed to, can even load old savegames :)
I did a completely normal installation in the standard program folder with UAC enabled. Did not use "Run as Administrator" either.

Must have been some registry problem, weird.

Thanks for your help Corey & Lothos.

Yes, seems that HoI2 & Vista SP1 should be compatible.

Edit
I'm currently testing HoI2 using Kubuntu 7.10 x64 & Wine. Runs very well, a bit slower perhaps.
