What housing you provide your colonist.

When i researched apartments is switch to this cause they can house the most people so i have lot of room for other buildings in the dome.
I know that a high comfort is important to get children so maybe you also need some apartments or smart homes to get this high enough.
Also some apartments have the basecomfort of 35 but some have up to 65. Was in a dome with parks. Is there a way to increase the comfort with some combination of buildins?

One time i replace all with smart apartments as i research them but the electronics upkeep drains on my production. So i think there are only for later or only for some colonist and not a general home. Is this right?

Thanks for your help.

The comfort of colonists is not only decided by housing. Its decided also by satisfying their needs. Each profession has their own needs in addition to the personal needs. Check the traits for more info. I only use apartments after they are unlocked, because you will get plenty of babies if you satisfy their needs. The smart apartments, is grate for outside dome facilities. To reduce sanity losses. Each dome, should have a medical, diner, grocery for basic needs. The new building amphitheatre, is good for early game luxury needs. Watch out for vegans, they do not like foods from ranches.

One big tip, is to specialize domes. One for production, that has engineers, officers, medics, and unspecialized for service buildings. Food dome, with botanists, medics, and unspecialized for service buildings. One for science with scientists, medics, and unspecialized for service buildings. One for outside mining rare metals and metals, with geologists, officers, medics and unspecialized for service buildings. Officers for domes with outside facilities to help reduce sanity losses when you have a disaster, and perhaps medical spire.

So yes, you need to combine buildings and services to care for comfort, health, sanity and fitness etc.

High housing comfort is a very cheap source of high comfort: I.e. a colonist living in a living complex with 65 living comfort (smaller dome with dome bioscaping) will get +6 every day, or +18 every 3 days, until they have reached 65 comfort, making this roughly equivalent to a free space bar.
Add a vista or home collective upgrade to that, and you have high comfort and the rough equivalent of a free casino for all residents.

On the other hand, the +10 living space an appartment has compared to a living complex costs you +11 energy and +2 concrete, which is more the upkeep of a micro dome (0.5 oxygen 0.5 water roughly equals 2-5 energy). For that alone it is almost always better to build more domes, even if you neglect the lower comfort, which is also a big minus for the reasons above.

Smart homes cost roughly the same upkeep as appartments (8 energy 1 electronic instead of 12 energy 3 concrete for 24 people), but have the huge bonus of healing +15 sanity every night instead of +5 (and higher living comfort). This means that you can run out-of-dome-buildings without the need for a medical building, and combined with a gym, colonists with social or exercise interest (scientists, geologists, regular colonists) can also continuously run heavy workloads for +20 performance without needing a medical building. That is a huge bonus and IMO more than makes up for the electronics upkeep (1 upkeep is roughly equivalent to 0.1 cost per sol).

So starting with the mid game I usually go living complex + medical center for engineers and botanists and smart complex + gym for scientists and geologists.
