Heya

Minefields are maintained by each Minelayer that you deploy in the Battle Manager.

Consequently each Minefield is limited in area around each Minelayer.

In practice, this means that unless you know which direction an inbound fleet is coming from, minefields may not be as useful as you would hope them to be.
If you do know which direction a fleet is coming from, you can use Battle Manager to (re)deploy various defenses to their immediate arrival area.

The Battle Manager has an edge marker for incoming fleets, in the same fashion as the edge markers for nearby star systems.

Yes but one thing you do know, is they are coming to your planet. So one thing I tend to do, is actually put my mines near the planet, not out on the fringe where they can be navigated around. If you want to come to my planet, come through the minefield, which, of course is also protecting defense sats.
