How do you keep your weapons?

Everytime I die, I seem to lose all the weapons I found. Is this the game mechanic or is it possible to keep my weapons I pick up?

When you die, you drop your weapon and your staff at the position where you died. As long as you did not drown, fall down a hole or something similar you can just get to your corpse and pick your stuff up again.

It was the same in diablo 2, as far as I remember and I have to say I do not dislike this mechanic.
